One thing I noticed is that Nargacuga and Tigrex are pretty much the exact opposite of eachother
Nargacuga hunts via ambushing prey and relies on carefully planned attacks while Tigrex's plan starts and stops at charge at it and hope for the best
Nargacuga's fur is jet black and helps it hide in the dark while Tigrex's scales are the equivalent to a massive flashing neon sign saying "I am here run from me"
Nargacuga is quiet and specifically does not want it's cover blown while Tigrex's roar is known for being so loud it damages the hunter

    • @unicorntomboy9736
      @unicorntomboy9736 Рік тому +46

One other way they are foils to one another is that Nargacuga prefers enclosed forest habitats (as well as slightly more open swampland to a certain degree) while Tigrex prefers very open areas like desert expanses, alpine steppes and mountain ranges

    • @JanusHoW
      @JanusHoW Рік тому +29

And that roar might hurt the Tigrex itself (but not in-game). Such mighty lungs would surely put a great deal of stress on the ribcage - roar too loudly too much and it might fracture its own ribs!
Also, Nargacuga's intelligence is almost certainly up there among non-elders - when enraged, it will deftly trigger pitfall traps without actually getting caught, similar to Rajang when it's NOT enraged.

@@JanusHoW i doubt an animal would be able to hurt itself by roaring , expecially a predator that relies soo much on endurance and phisical fitness to survive such as tigrex ,
i think that is just solved by having a powerful diaphram and ribs that are more flexible than other animals ...

@Davide Garuti in support of what you said, another hunting tactic for small prey is simply to stun it with a roar. While they would go after larger prey or smaller wyverns, supplementing their diet with the fish and other hunterish sized meals would be easy as the stun hits a wide range and lasts long enough for Tigrex to make the hunt successful. Along with that just like fire wyvern evolved to handle their own fire we'd have to assume there are adaptations to prevent harm from its own or others roars, a glimpse into this is how the armour gives earplugs buffs, so it could be a density to the hide or a thin layer of blubber to help stop resonation.

A bit late but I also wanna add the contradiction between their weapons: At the same rank, Tigrex's weapons always offer very high Raw (reaching even the highest in some games) but with mediocre Sharpness and negative Affinity. While Nargacuga's weapons offer lower Raw in return for their high Sharpness and Affinity

Rather than an astigmatism, I think the eye trails are better attributed to motion blur. With how fast Narga can leap laps around a hunter, turning to face it may be difficult, and the bright-red eyes would appear as streaks just from the natural blur that comes from rapidly turning around.

@@Rainyjax Considering how nargacuga are cathemeral( mostly nocturnal, but depends on the circumstances and environment) predators and have evolved high melanin concentration in the intugement layers to allow for concealment, it wouldnt be too unreasonable to assume that the species had evolved the ocular adaptation called tapetum lucidem.
Commonly seen in most crepuscular and nocturnal vertebrates, this retinal membrane allows for photon-photoreceptor stimulation which enhances the dim light visibility property of the rod cells. The lurid glow arises from light reflecting off of the blood vessels, but the color varies between phylogenetic lineages. The membrane would facilitate navigation for nargacuga and considering how acute the species hearing is, it is a highly specialized for ambush hunting.
The effect could also be a product of the anime-like style of the series and is merely added for intimidation. The glow really only appears after the camera flash in real life, so maybe its ust because of a feature that ichinose thought was interesting. After all, mh designs, while grounded, are only realistic within the parameters of the philosophy and don't always pertain to real world evolution.

I do think Nargacuga could benefit alot from environmental interactions. Like you had suggested, having him jump into the trees and ambush hunters would easily sell his image as an ambush predator. I even imagined one of its possible new attacks, where it jumps from tree to tree around the player as the player frantically turns their camera around before the Narga suddenly pounces onto the player.
Perhaps even more so if they change Narga's AI to make it less of a direct fighter and more of a cautious one, maybe by increasing the speed of the attacks and making Narga back away more often. Basically, turn it into a hit and run fighter. It will probably be more annoying though gameplay wise.

An interesting interaction with Nargacuga is how it interacts with Sonic bombs. A loud noise triggers it to flinch that it hops around, roars, its eyes glow, and its tail swings up and spikes out. It's like an instant response to another, larger monster showing up and roaring. It just instantly triggers a massive threat display, and then it goes into full fight mode. Pretty cool!

One suggestion in regards to black versus green nargacuga- the pigment melanin has antibacterial properties, which may be important for a furry animal living in very moist habitats (particularly for New World nargacuga, who may have to deal with residual effects from Blackveils living nearby). Since green colouration is widespread enough to be a 'normal' pigment or structural colour in many monsters, it's possible that green nargacuga are leucistic individuals, only retaining darker colour on the claws. The claws might still be dark because of structural melanin. Melanin helps strengthen keratinous structures (e.g birds often having black wingtips where the stress on the feathers is highest), and the claw scales will need to be particularly tough on this animal. Alternately, it could just be a structural colour from the layout of the keratin, given that albino nargacuga still have dark colouration in the same areas.

Probably an important prey item for New World Nargacuga are the packing Fanged Wyverns like Jagras and Shamos. While smaller than Nargacuga they are still larger than Kelbi or packing Bird Wyverns from the Old World. One or two a day is probably enough for a Nargacuga to live off of and can be killed and consumed quickly as to allow Nargacuga to not be as pressured by its competition. Shamos may especially be important in Nargacuga's diet as there are no large herbivores in the Coral Highlands. Great Jagras, Kulu, Tziti, Pukei and Paolumu are also all likely on the menu, being relatively easy to dispatch if caught off guard.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes you've done so far. This intimate of looks at a monster and it's ecology was very nice to see. It really felt like this episode was built-up over the course of several others now that you've gone more experienced with doing these, with the ecological roles of Rathalos, Anjanath, Pukei, and many-many more tieing into one of the best coverages I've seen of a monster. Congrats overall and thank you for the episode.
Some questions I do have though. I was surprised to not see Nargacuga's role in the Coral Highlands covered, since for a lot of people, including me, Nargacuga's residence here has been one of the most bizarre. A monster typically restricted to warm/temperate dense forests living in high fairly-cold mountains. Curious as to what the case could be for this divergence. Maybe the New World Nargacuga sort of returning to its old world niche? Small prey is all that's available (Kelbi and Wing Drakes) with occasional larger prey items (Tzitzi-Ya-Ku and Paolumu) with only a few key large competitors (Legiana and the occasional rathian/odogaron).
Also was surprised by the inclusion of Espinas, and I'm now dying to see an episode on him specifically. Despite Frontier being.....Frontier, Espinas's introduction to proper canon with Sunbreak has made him one of my all-time favorite monsters. He's yet another elder-dragon-level-monster like jho, rajang, bazel, and magnamalo, but he is nothing like them. Instead of being yet-another nomadic, aggressive monster that blitzes through any apex predators it comes across, Espinas are sedentary and largely peaceful. He's just a guy that eats and sleeps, only becoming an absolute force to be reckoned with when threatened. He is such a breath of fresh air and I'd like to see him looked at more.

While I like big monsters better than smaller ones Nargacuga becoming larger seemed like an odd choice to make it seem stronger, but it just made it relatively slower and easier to hit as a consequence. I feel like they could of done more with Nargacuga to help you control the pace of the battle a bit more, such as using the environment or being able to lure it into more claustrophobic areas, but I'm not a game designer so what do I know? World did a lot in terms of environmental combat but towards the end and into Rise it became more of 'Does this place have walls I can bash the monster into?" more than "How can I use this setting to my advantage?"

After a wile I also got worldborn and I feel like I was the only one who actually loved that Nargacuga. I can’t pin point why though. Maybe it was the feeling of realizing that I had indeed mastered the narga cigs fight of 5th gen or just the iceborn version of his theme. And lucend Nargacuga was an amazing fight if you ask me and the perfect fit for the re-introduction of rare species. But his armor was super disappointing for me. Great video, always liked Nargacuga for their ecology, one of the better realized flagships alongside Rathalos, though its popularity has somewhat soured my appreciation as it feels like it shows up way too often, especially since its role as a fast, stealthy nocturnal hunter is one we don't see enough of.
On that note, part of me has always considered Green Nargacuga to be a diurnal subspecies to the black Nargacuga, with the two sharing habitats but simply adapting for different times of day to avoid competition, especially since in 3rd gen Green Nargacuga was more active in its moveset which to me reflected a more active and potentially pursuit oriented lifestyle, potentially even meaning they preferentially hunt in the more open areas of the habitats they are encountered in. It could still work with Green Nargacugas being colour variants though admittedly my knowledge on real world colour variants affecting hunting behavior is extremely limited.

Hello there! I have a question. While you have been (justifiably) critical of magnamalo's ecology, I recently had a thought. Domesticated chickens originally produced many eggs at once during times when seeds were released in order to make the most use of the temporary resources. Could a similar thing be happening with Magnamalo and the rampage, where it enters an "awakened" state in response to the environment?

Should be noted that despite Capcom listing Nargacuga as having fur in it's item descriptions it's actually covered in feathers and the wing blades are made of hardened feathers. Not the first or last time this will happen. Anjanath is based on large therapods possibly having some feathers yet it's listed as having fur which dinosaurs did not have. One version of Paolumu tracks mentions fur while the subspecies states feathers and I can only assume fur/feathers are translation issues or not even Capcom being consistent since they have listed Narga having fur since the start but now in 5th gen they gave it clearly defined feathers and pyctofibers. Capcoms own ecology tree links Flying, Bird, Brute and weirdly Fanged Wyverns to dinosaurs as well or rather they are dinosaurs. Silverwind btw is a elderly Nargacuga that happened to live long enough to get to that life stage and it's still the same species as regular Narga.

If we went further into the ecology side of the game in mh6 I'd love to see some kleptoparasitic behaviour. Even better if we see it ramp up when you unlock a "hyper aggressive" monster for an area, to show that it only kills so much to cover it's losses, which are in total probably causing less damage to the ecosystem since it's feeding multiple predators at once. I'd love some more feline monsters.
Also in regards to green nargacuga, my theory is that they're akin to albinos, and nargacuga's fur is actually just such a deep shade of green basically black, that when lightened becomes the shade of green narga.

Odd thing to hope, but i still hope that in next Monster Hunter game when you hunt Nargacuga during day, its fight goes like so far, perhaps more jumps from elevated areas and minor speed increased depending on what danger level Narg poses on new area. But during night it gains new behavior moves as well as Lucent Nargs invisibility when moving certain distance away from player. This night tactics would utilize its dark coloring, only its red eyes could be seen IF you can keep track of where they move due to its speed and jumping around before striking.
Why you want to fight Narg on different times?
    -Day allow more easy fight
-Night allows best drops that you cannot get during day

Fantastic video! I've never played the older MH games, but I thought Narga was kind of a forgetable fight in rise, maybe because he was missing his speed. At least I thought so until I fought Lucent. While I agree that just giving him invisibility is a bit dumb, I think it played out very nicely in the actual fight. He was definetly fast enough to feel like a threat and his pounces out of visibility felt much more fitting for an ambush predator. This adaptation is seen in high-speed predatory fishes like Sailfish, which are adapted to hunt at speeds up to 60mph.

What a wonderful specimen from a wonderful class of wyverns or should I say psuedowyverns. I've been looking forward to your take and research into this bad boy and his cousins for a while. Perhaps I missed it in the video, but I was curious if you'd cover the high sensitivity this creature had to sonic bombs. I have to assume it comes from a more fine tuned set of ears to detect vibrations of monsters both big and small. Making it better at avoiding larger and thunderous steps of threats like adult bambaros or anjanath or notice the quick, but light steps of prey within the deep brush of its preferred hunting grounds. If the thick cover makes it hard to see perhaps enhanced hearing is a reliable tool for survival.
To be honest, I agree heavily with your comment on it being too large and the lack of environmental cover and use has made this monster a lot less of an interesting fight and challenge. I distinctly recall how much I had to learn and adapt to either quickly turn my camera or trust my positioning as it dances around my hunter back in the PSP days.
One other thing I was wondering about was the fur like feathering narga has. It makes me curious if it's a more derived trait as the more basal Tigrex is completely scaled covered and if it has any functions beyond Capcom adding aesthetics. Hopefully I didn't miss this as I am driving as I was listening to this video. Definitely worth the rewatch.

The easiest explanation, of course, is that this was just Iceborne being Iceborne and plopping Narga somewhere it doesn't belong, since there's a limited selection of potential prey in such an area, being limited mostly to Kelbi, Shamos, and perhaps smaller wyverns like Coral Pukei and Tzitzi Ya-Ku.
