15:38 “Animation is not about moving things on paper, it’s about bringing character’s to life” -Aaron Blaise Now that’s a quote I’ll hold dearly in my life’s dream! I hope I can be an animator in any way possible! A hobby, part time or full time I’ma make it up to my goal no matter what position I am, because that’s what I call determination with a bit of gusto.
This one is a treasure,"Don't think about how you are moving it, think about the life you are giving it and that will determine the movement". - Legendary animator Aaron Blaise
Hey Aaron, very cool video, your talent is immense! Sort of an odd connection, but you worked with my uncle Bob Walker on Brother Bear. He never really shared much of what he does, and having discovered your videos it’s cool getting a sense of what he did as our family is very proud of him. Lastly I’d just like to say that he spoke very highly of you, some of the few stories I heard from him about his time working on brother bear, almost always mentioned you. My dad and I look at your Facebook page all the time, your art is very appreciated. cheers from Ottawa, Canada.
So wonderful to see this comment. Your Uncle Bob was the first person I met at Disney 31 years ago and he was like a brother to me. I miss him immensely. Thank you so much for reaching out.
I'm taking an animation course. and this week the teacher spent this exercise. and then you post this video reinforcing what he said. Thank you very much
I’m in my mid twenties and have always been anxious about learning animation. But you make it look so approachable and I’m eager to learn everything that I can thanks to you. So thank you!
I'm in my mid 60s and let alone animation, I just started figuring out the basics of drawing, but it really is my hope to be a competent animator one day (albeit as a hobby).
Simple straightforward stuff like this really makes it easier to start thinking about connections. For instance if you look up how to animate a bouncing ball you will learn about how filling up the frames between the major moments is different based on the speed of what’s happening and that’s going to be different whether or not the subject has control of it’s own physics and from there you can build on other physical ideas. Who doesn’t love this guy?
I have been trying to learn figure drawing the past couple of weeks, and it has been a frustrating experience. Each hour of practice required at least half an hour of break. And yet, here I am experimenting on my own, striking poses in the mirror and then trying to imagine a sack of flour doing it. So much fun! Thank you SO much for sharing this video!
Im not an animator but just the emotion youre abke to express in the sack of flour has prickled a desire to draw again for the first time in a couple years... Thankyou. Id lost this part of myself and I think I know how to get back my identity as an artist now.
wow i can see that excises like this directly influenced the Magic Carpet from Aladin. I always loved that character and marvels that it could communicate so much while being silent. Amazing.
Mr. Blaise, I can’t tell you just how inspiring and fun you make art to be, not just in animation and character design, but all aspects of art. Your videos, wisdom and experience truly make every one of your vids a gem for any and every kind of artist. Thank you and all that you do! You will be remembered for a long time just like one of the Nine Old Men. Period.
I'm in a Graphic Design degree program and I'm supposed to be completing an assignment, but I keep getting distracted by animation and finding this channel has COMPLETELY taken me off onto a whole other tangent! I love it! I'll get back to my assignment in a minute. I still have 20 hours to finish it. Lol!
Greatest advice my animator friend gave me was: Don’t think of drawing a line, but as creating volume. This is a great exercise to get that sense of volume.
Thank you so much for these lessons and tutorials! I've always preferred using traditional media to digital, and the Disney style has been the inspiration behind my own art style since I was a kid! The way there was always so little shading but everything had life and depth and dimension was incredible, and I've been trying to work toward that level for years! So thank you, thank you for these videos! You really inspire me to try and get into more in-depth animation!
It is amazing that I can come here and experience a creation of a sad flour sack :D I really like how this classic exercise (I've heard about it before) teaches to think about the life and emotions shown by gesture and whole body. As a kid I always relied only on the face to convey emotions - which was so wrong... I think having the face taken away forces to think differently, and that's awesome! Thank you for these videos, they are inspiring :) (and the sound of paper and scribbling is very soothing for me)
I'm so happy that there's somebody showing this stuff on UA-cam or in general! I want to learn as much about this as possible and you have so much incredible knowledge! Not too mention you're a really good teacher and incredibly skilled in your craft Thank you, Aaron!
This was awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us. These tips are so simple yet make all the difference. I love your channel and the videos you make.
Just imagine the work behind animating the magic carpet from aladdin, without any facial features and dialogues it gives a lot of emotions and information in the film... 💘
I live in New Mexico and still buy my flour in big, bulky cotton sacks because we buy in bulk since it's easier and cheaper. I save the sacks afterwards to make into different things. I never thought about observing it as a subject for animation/illustration. Thanks for the idea.
I just recently purchased a membership and can’t wait til I can really dive in! I haven’t done any kind of sketches for years and I’m so excited to get back to it.
"Aww...you sad" Haha..I don't know why but that's weirdly funny Honestly, this video and your guide really take me to another view in character design as well! I probably will draw tons of sack flour later! 😂
Subbed. I've always loved hand drawn animation and I'm trying to get better. You make it look so easy lol. So do you just think of an action or emotion and draw the starting and ending poses (extremes) for said action, then go back and fill out the rest of the action with the "in-between" drawings? That system makes a lot of sense, read about it in one of the animation books from R. Williams.
& that's why clean-up animation on paper with pencil is harder than rough animation on paper with pencil, before scanning into the computer for digital ink & paint.

It turned out very cool and I wonder what you drew on paper? I just don't understand what kind of tool it is (Sorry if the question is stupid)
Exactly the move is great mr. Aaron i am inpire the way you Draw fantasting! God bless you!
You have an inspiring talent for this art style. Thank you for your continued work in animation.
I am not that good at drawing characters but I want to animate, What can I do?
The flour sack really makes me think of the Carpet in Aladin.
TRUE
More like the one in Sleeping Beauty.
Exactly what I thought !

The video will probably always be up, watch it later.
Class because you can watch this after. (I know this is too late, but for next time.)
Aaron would be a good idea!

This was such a valuable demonstration! Thank you so much!
I'm now thinking the animators for Carpet in Aladin must have been having art school flash backs to the flour sack exercise! ; p
I can't thank you more.

this man just literally put life, emotions and expressions in a flour sack. Unbelievable!
Shawn the Sheep is superb acting without words (although it is stop motion, not 2D). I’m always impressed with the brilliance of Aardman

I really like this basic tutorial format as opposed to the live streams. No chit chat, no silly questions, no Dustin doing weird voices.

Why is it so adorable?? Why?? Why do I want to make it feel better?
I've learned more about animation from you than I even had when I went to the art institute of Pittsburgh.
