- As predicted, Keir Starmer has won an enormous majority. Elsewhere, eleven cabinet ministers have lost their seats, including: Grant Shapps, Gillian Keegan and Penny Mordaunt. Former prime minister Liz Truss has lost her seat, as have senior Tories Jacob Rees-Mogg and Miriam Cates. The Lib Dems have made massive gains, the SNP were decimated in Scotland and Nigel Farage is the MP for Clacton.
But it’s not a clean sweep for Labour. Two Labour frontbenchers have lost their seats and Starmer will enter government on a vote share of 35 per cent, the lowest of any postwar governing party. Will this hinder him in government? And is this landslide down to the Farage effect?
James Heale speaks to Fraser Nelson and Katy Balls.

Labour got two-thirds of the seats with only one-third of the popular vote. A clear demonstration of the unfairness of FPTP.
Yeah the debate about PR and FPTP tends to follow a trend. Those in power tend to go cold on the suggestion of electoral reform, while those out of government tend to get very vocal about it. The Tories had 14 years to make those reforms but somehow didn’t.

Agree but IMO the UK has in effect voted for the status quo by voting Labour. If Labour goes on to do the same as the Tories then they deserve the same fate as the Tories come the next GE.

The 2nd lowest turnout than has ever been recorded and only a marginal increase in people voting Labour so although the amount of Labour MP's is impressive it's a very fragile victory.
@@alangardner8596 based on our system, it’s a big win, but it’s more a repudiation of the Tories, however Labour now have a majority so big they can pass whatever they want, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can stick together and pass things that actually help the NHS, single mothers, the poor working class, etc. Keir Starmer is a centre right politician so I don’t see it happening

You can be absolutely certain if Boris had won a 170 seat majority on 33% of the vote all everyone would be talking about was his lack of mandate and the urgent need for electoral reform.

I disagree, think that starmer will escalate all the problems the tories escalated from Blair.
That is the plan. Labour will do exactly what the tories were doing but will do it x100. Reform took all the votes they were ever going to take from the Tories. No Tory candidate doesn't automatically mean the electorate will vote Reform, people who vote Tory but want to punish the party don't necessarily align with Reform's policies.
No-one mentioning the success of the pro-Gaza independents.
It seems insane to me that the conflict in a tiny country in a different continent where the UK has no troops and the outcome has no direct effect (on the UK) is even an electoral issue at all, let alone a notable one.
Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to the entire political class. Blair brought the Islamists in for easy votes but like a man who plants bindweed for the pretty flowers, it has run out of control.

Why does the incumbency factor never affect Labour in Wales? They are generally perceived to be doing a terrible job an almost every metric but are never punished for it. Yet the Tories and SNP get hammered.
Tribal voting. Same in Spain. “My party (the Socialists) are doing a terrible job but I will keep on voting for them so that the Right doesn’t win”. Eg I would rather starve under socialist rule than go hungry under a conservative rule. Or, my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents voted Labour so I will as well.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the labour honeymoon is going to last probably a couple of months then we're going to see what's going to happen. But I'm betting in a couple of years, 's, all the problems we have now will still be here and I don't think anything's going to change.

As much as I dislike Labour ideologically, if they can turn the country around, all power to them. The vote count for Starmer's own constituency was down by 50%, total votes for Labour was hardly any different from the defeat of Corbyn in 2019, yet this time it results in a landslide victory, totally bizarre and unrepresentative system we have !

When you add to that the so called candidate was a professional actor, specializing in rough voices, and the very fact he had to travel 80 miles from his home to get to Clacton, should beg the question, why the hell would anyone want to travel that far to deliver leaflets ?
The evidence is piling up against channel 4, with more to follow, if you listened to the MSM you would think it was actually true, but the truth is coming to light now, that is was a clear set up ! Give the mainstream media a wide birth, especially channel 4 and the BBC, they are far from neutral !

The smug Spectator, which I have read weekly for well over 40 years, has reaped the whirlwind of its total failure to understand the appeal of Reform, which polled at 23% in my constituency.
Yes, but at 14% nationally, and then among people who will never read let alone subscribe to the Spectator.
1. The turnout is estimated to be around 60%, making it the lowest turnout since 2001 when it was 59.4%[2].
2. This is a notable drop from the 67.3% turnout recorded in the 2019 election
3. If the final figure remains at or below 59.4%, it would mark the lowest participation in a general election since World War
4. Several constituencies across the UK saw voter turnouts of around 50%, with some even as low as 40%
5. Experts are describing this as potentially the lowest turnout since 1945, indicating a lack of enthusiasm among voters
This low turnout is being interpreted as a sign of voter apathy rather than a strong mandate for any particular party, despite Labour's victory in the election.
Labour didnt win it , the Tories lost it. Starmer will be replaced after a year and this country becomes a third world one with donkeys and camels in the streets outside mosques.

It was a good, even very good result for Reform but reality check Matt, it wasn't great. Tories did better than expected and l don't believe Reform will find more votes from the Tories south England base. Reform will have to find much more fertile ground from abour voters. Laughing at Fraser Nelson and his po-faced pomposity about the Tory losses in the Thames Valley and wider South East. Lib Dems won Maidenhead where Reform didn't stand a candidate. Henley LD out polled Conservative and Reform combined, Chichester LD obliterated the combination by 20%. In all these seats Labour and Green still managed 10% between them so it wasn't perfect tactical voting either. If Mr Nelson had done his homework and looked at the results rather than jumping to conclusions on snapshots he might have reached a different end point.

Proportional representation is an utterly unworkable and, indeed, undemocratic idea. It destroys all notion of local constituency and turns the entire nation into a single constituency beholden to bureaucratic number-crunching appointers of parliamentary appointees. A particular constituency gave a Labour candidate the majority, but that's one Labour candidate too many for the "proportional representation"? Sorry, constituency, you can't have the person you voted for. You get the Conservative, or Lib Dem, or Reform face that gets the proportional calculus right. So, really, proportional representation means the death of local politics, the abolition of constituencies.

Under PR we would now have a Labour, Lib Dem and Green coalition with the greens having disproportionate negotiating power as kingmakers and getting their policies in - that very few people voted for - as part of the negotiations. Would you prefer that?

@@JustMeHere359 Under PR, generally you need to form a coalition which can have a governing majority. The single largest party (Labour) normally gets to form that coalition. Labour is not going to go into coalition with the conservatives or reform - it would do a deal with the Lib Dems and would also need the greens to get a majority looking at the vote share. Knowing that Labour need them to get a governing majority the Greens would bargain hard even though they had few votes - as the DUP did when Teresa May needed them. This is what happens in other countries that have PR. So yes, reform would have more seats under PR but in this election the actual government would be significantly more left wing than the Labour Party which has just won.

I like FPTP. It's the best way to run a constituency based parliamentary system. The national "vote share" talking point is entirely irrelevant under a constituency based system as each vote is limited to its locality. Vote share is only talked about by media outlets who have to justify wall-to-wall coverage of elections and its an easy talking point.
Constituencies are the best way to hold individuals to account... look at Truss, Morgan, Maudant et al, under a PR system they'd still be in safe seats, as it is they're out.

The U.K. has just moved from a socialist lite to a socialist government, and the Tories got exactly what they deserve.
If Reform want to be taken seriously, then they need to get to work; five years is a very short time when you have to select, vet and train candidates.

If the Tories improve their vote at next election, that helps Labour as Reform is second to Labour in 98 seats. A mirror view of the split vote.
it's empowering for the country to see labour just getting their usual suspects to vote for them. Sadly there just are 9 million socialists who are incapable of acknowledging reason and facts, so they will vote for labour no matter what. However the largest "voting" block is the non voters - people disillusioned by the current parties. I really think given the impending wokism labour will impose, and the ever worsening illegal immigration issue, that reform will win the next election out right.
