- This video is the first half of a two-part video discussing common opioids given after surgery a nurse perspective.
The first portion of the video is focused on addressing the Opioid Crisis in the United States, citing current data addressing opioid addiction after surgery and the number of continued escalating opioid related deaths annually. I share insight on my personal exposure to the crisis and beginning steps to acknowledging the change that needs to occur in how we manage postoperative surgical pain. I review data on opioid sparing success for pain management and how the ERAS protocols can help decrease opioid consumption after surgery.
We review the opioid protein receptors in the nervous system. The Mu, MOR, Kappa, KOR and Delta, DOR protein opioid receptors.
The latter half of the video I discuss Fentanyl, it’s lethality, addictive properties and multiple synthetic derivatives in clinical and street use.

How about doing some education on the the number of deaths among the Chronic Pain Community resulting from the “opioid epidemic”? Post-op under-medication is a HUGE problem for chronic pain patients due to PACU nurses and Pain Management teams in the hospital setting during the acute post-op period. And both the under-medication or total withdrawal of opiates of those who genuinely need these lifesaving medications is killing a whole host of individuals being swept under the rug and mistreated by the medical community

Hi TheWillToWalk, I apologize for not responding to your comment. I didn't want to skim over your response, but then life got busy with work and family. I agree in the past chronic pain patients got mislabeled by the medical community. But, I wanted to share with you that the education or nursing knowledge we share on PNM teaches nurses the different types of multimodal pain management strategies that can be offered, from NSAIDs, and Non-Narcotic Analgesics. Then I teach the about narcotics, the severity or intensity of different medications about the central and peripheral nervous system and how our bodies metabolize narcotics. The Pre-Admission Screening/Testing (PAS/T) Nurses are identifying chronic pain patients not to avoid them, but to actually develop a pain plan with anesthesia for them. So, that we adequately get their pain under control in the PACU. I have on occasions been the pre-op nurse and have immediatly identified a patient who is on High dose Oxycodone and we were able to create a pain plan with the patient and anesthesia to discuss narcotic options and other advanced pain modalities like a regional anesthesia or as many say a "Pain Block" to fully manage rebound post-op pain after surgery. Very good information and educational. I’m all very enthusiastic to learn, and our Instructor is very beautiful lady, smart and talks or instructs well.
May I suggest to show more or longer on the slides. Please show more of the slides longer because as I try to understand, I also like looking at the slides and words in the slides for better memory retention.

Thanks Colby! I agree, with MMA, we can really provide improved pain coverage than with opioids alone.
As someone who can't have nsaids and for whom Tylenol does nothing for her, this all makes me put off surgery because I am thinking that I won't be given enough opioids to help my pain.
HI Queen, I would recommend you have a conversation with your surgeon and anesthesiologist or CRNA to come up with a "pain plan" so that you have a clear plan moving forward. There is so much we can do with Multimodal analgesia these days and Regional Anesthesia- i.e. anesthesia blocks.

Stop talking about junkies. And worry about treating pain. Guns kill more than prescriptions. But they can still be bought without a prescription. Stop justifying a way to control people, and their treatments.
Awareness is the first step we all are at risk. Addiction has no boundaries, this is not a video to focus on junkies, it discussing the addictive truth of Opioids. All who become addicted are the victim of the drug's designed effects.
Why are you trying to take opioids away from good ppl who need them. Have you noticed that the only country that the fentanyl epidemic is ravaging is United States. It’s because other countries haven’t tried to eliminate all options of pain relief for pain patients or users or whoever it may be. SMH the smallest dose possible lol this fuckin cracked me up
