An Homage to the Scarborough RT: The Sights and Sounds of the SRT

  • From its opening on March 24, 1985 to its unfortunate early-retirement on July 24, 2023, the Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT / Scarborough RT) extended the reach of rapid transit beyond the terminus of Bloor-Danforth at Kennedy Station. The line operated through a dedicated guideway with segments underground, elevated and at grade.
The line operated using UDTC ICTS Mark 1 vehicles. Passengers could experience what was once seen as the future of rapid transit, using linear induction motors, semi-automated controls and smaller trains than the TTC Subway lines.
At the end of its service life and in need of serious repairs, the decision was made to prepare for its closure on November 19, 2023. However, a derailment between Ellesmere and Lawrence East stations on July 24, 2023 led to the early termination of service. The current guideway will be dismantled to be converted into a busway until the opening of the Scarborough Extension of Line 2.
Let’s celebrate and remember the sights and sounds of the SRT, a rapid transit line with a lot of character and quite a bit of history.

Good morning everyone! We are quite saddened by the fact the Scarborough RT will not be returning for a proper goodbye in November as originally planned.
Over the last 38 years, it provided connectivity to Scarborough and was a landmark of the development of the ICTS vehicles, which are now exported globally under the Innovia name. Over the coming weeks, we will be slowly updating the content on railfans.ca to immortalize the iconic transit line with updated photos from this summer and vehicle photos. -David

Just imagine... if they had put any money into this, Toronto could have had its own extensive automated Skytrain, just like Vancouver...

Well, at least we got the Ontario Line in the near future to look forward to.

... with the first extension being along Eglinton and it wouldn't have taken 10 years either!

@@edwardmiessner6502This could be honestly true. Look at Vancouver for example our Transit agency, TransLink has benefitted from having Skytrain instead of a Metro or Subway. Our transit expansions happen faster and cheaper compared to the TTC’s insane prices per Km of Subway extensions.

Glad you enjoyed! I am really glad I had the chance to try it once before it closed so I could immortalize the sounds of the line. Linear induction motors are quite something sonically! -David

To me, the Scarborough RT was the most hardcore train experience. It was my go-to when I needed train sounds, feelings movements of train on tracks and all those little other things that make trains interesting to ride. somehow, those were all amplified on the Scarborough RT.
    You will be missed!

Being from Vancouver I have to now say I’m super lucky as were the last city with Trolleybuses and now the last city in Canada using Canadian built UTDC Trains aka the Skytrain. Sure the newer trains are fantastic but there’s something special about TransLink’s UTDC (Urban Transportation Development Cporporation) ICTS (intermediate capacity train system) Mark I. We have our Mark 1 Trains in service till 2028 when they will all be retired immediately replaced by Bombardier Mark 3 and Alstom Mark 4&5 trains that are 5 cars long. There’s plans to keep a few sets around for display purposes, parks or heritage train services.

Took this line many times. Very reliable and great to connect to Scarborough.
Now they have packed busses lol 😂

We hope that, as sad as it is to say, to see the new bus guide-way completed sooner than later to hopefully offer enough capacity in the long-term. It will be a weird sight to see buses instead of trains, but it will be a rough time for a while. -David

Rough time is an understatement. I have already taking the #3 replacement busses and they are packed like sardines.
I’m just glad I live in Midtown Toronto and Don’t need to really commute that much in Scarborough.
Feel bad for the Scarborough residents that need it that every day.
And if past transit projects are sign of things then I see that new line being ready after 2030.

The biggest shame in Canadian transit history is closing down this line. This technology really should have been adopted nationwide as clearly its a winner... Ask Vancouver! And Dubai!

Unfortunately it snows here and those trains were useless in the snow

The "same" trains are also used in Vancouver, as well as the following generations of Innovia trainsets. Most of the winter issues are related to the track design and the lack of space to move snow more than the vehicles themselves. The LIM motors also did not like the cold, but most of those problems are resulting from an old design that was shoehorned and, for the most part, reaching end of life. -David
