I played Metal Gear Solid 2 a year or two ago, and I loved it. It had good gameplay, the soundtrack was an absolute banger. The Raiden twist was misleading, but that’s the whole theme of the game, so I think it’s welcome.

I should admit that I had some mixed feelings about MGS2 not just because of the sudden switch to a completely different character, but I wasn't fully on board with the story it told and because of too many twists that are hard to count, and it also tried to repeat the same gameplay and story beats from MGS1. Sure, it was effective for the themes it was going for, but it was a pretty weird direction. But it was one of the games within the series I've replayed multiple times over and it has grown on me in time. I still love this game despite its flaws. And the graphics were a groundbreaking technical achievement for the system it was designed for. Can't imagine they made a game that visually still holds up and still made it run at a consistent higher framerate. The rain effects were outstanding.

It makes me happy MGS2 is seen as a masterpiece nowadays, while I prefer 3, MGS2 is such a masterpiece and snakes message at the end really spoke to me. Honestly love this game so much.

    This game is a masterpiece
2nd fav kojima game (snake eater is 1)
The trilogy was my childhood and I liked this game fine as a kid but as I grew older my opinion got significantly higher and I really started to appreciate it better. Especially compared to most games today.
It's so ambitious even to this day.

I was obssed with this game back then. I was upset at first for playing Raiden instead of Snake, but I understood Kojima's philosophy. I've never played Substance but I recently got a copy, can't wait to play it

1:12:28 - I knew Naomi and Emma had the same voice actress, but I didn't hear it until now.
Also, both of Hale's characters have someone they consider a brother, who is older, and not blood-related, from whom they're estranged. Both brothers have a secret from their "little sister" that she would consider a betrayal though neither one is ever told, through we as the audience, through Snake, are. Both of her characters' deaths are unnecessary, not even as a motivation for any of the male protagonists. As a stretch, their deaths were both caused, directly or indirectly, by nanomachines.

To get it out of the way, yes, Dead Cell isn't as interesting as Foxhound but we never had a rogues gallery as good as Foxhound in the later games as well and the cut at the end stands out and is unfortunate but understandable. Other than that overall this is the best Metal Gear Solid game in my eyes, and the one which deserverves the title of a masterpiece or at close to it as it gets, which I do not not do often. A lot of the reasons are mentioned here, the gameplay, the visuals, the themes, the game was waaay ahead of it's time, it's baffling how they came up with that conclusion now everyone is aware of in 2001.
So a lot of the points are covered here, but my most important two reasons why I love this game weren't even in here, which is weird. First of all the connection of the player character and the player. Not only are we looking up to Snake as Raiden does, as Raiden we were following the commands of a computer the whole time. He had the same reaction as he hears it as we did, since it was over the top when the president told him that we all follow the commands of a computer, he did follow the commands of GW the whole time though as did we, and since it's a game the commands a piece of software gave us the whole time. Every game does it, MGS made this the story,...aaaand Bioshock did a watered down version of pretty much exaclty that years later and got praised for it, although this was another human and it doesn't work as well as with GW in MGS2, it was ahead of its time, which wasn't good for it.
And the second reason, the parrot moment,...you know which moment I mean. It was framed so good, a voice from the grave, too late and since it's a parrot you know that she had to say that often, without explicitly telling you, plus this was the moment I realized what games could do emotionally, this was the very first time, and I think the only one since, if I think about it, where a videogame made me tear up,...for a bunch of textured and animated meshes. Nowadays, this can be normal but back in the day a video game making you "feel" something, this was kind of new.
And I have a secret third reason, because this one basically only appies to me. Later in my life I studied game development, everything from programming, modelling, rigging, animation and looking back MGS2 wasn't only the game which made me a gamer again, after a few years of pausing, it kept me playing, beeing interested and fascinated in games. And one thing that stuck with me was the last bossfight in the game with the sword moves done with the analog stick. My mastersthesis was a combat system like that without the need of buttons, an evolved version and if I'm beeing honest also evolded to For Honor and MGR:R (in this case of course only the part with the stick controls), it combined HEMA strikes and stances, executions like in DMC and like in Street Fighter, simultanious movement, control of the strenght, parries and 360° block and while we're at it a stamina system like in the Soulsgames. That was my goal to combine all these things just with the two sticks, it's just a prototype but I accomplished exactly what I was set out to do and I'm proud of it. And this all, a whole career path with this end goal all started with MGS2.

I feel bad ive never seen this til now; i thought I'd seen just about every MGS2 retrospective/review on YT, but, the algorithm and engine never gave me this one.
Shame too, cause this is a really good one; I'd rate it particulatly high.
The only "criticisms" if you could even call them that would be the April 30th thing. Its only brought up in the game 5 times- 3 from Rose, 1 from Raiden, 1 from Solidus; i think even 1 of the times from Rose like Raidens are optional. I get i feels like a lot tho- its such a focal point that first hour of Raiden.
The only other thing, and this isnt even you its the game- what happened to Otacon was sexual assault/abuse, and, his internal guilt manifested as him seeing it as a consensual affair because of how he hated himself for it.
Kojima said as such in an interview- but it never got elaborated on in this game or 4, so, its easily missable.
Other than that though, this was a treat- the 2 hours flew by. I saw you came back recently, so, I'm gladly gonna stick around. With the Metal Gear remasters and the Snake Eater remake too, here's hoping you get some more traction.

Act two and the reveal of Raiden killed the overall special factor of this game unfortunately!
Plus act 2, was for 80% percent of the game, so it turned majority of the fans off, including me.

I of course have not watched this to our video in its entirety
My quick thoughts on this game is that it's a great game
Incredibly well done, and a big improvement on the first one in gameplay and presentation
    It still looks good
I was indeed disappointed to not play a snake for the whole game
But it wasn't a huge deal breaker or anything
All that said, however it was never a game I really felt compelled to replay once I beat it
Going through that trippy story once was good enough for me
Unlike the first and third game which I would consistently replay

My comment might be irrelevant to this video, but I guess you'd nevertheless find it interesting. I've seen most of your videos & like them. In one of your videos on Metal Gear Solid, you had a question regarding voice actors dropping their accents since Sons of Liberty. I have an answer to that question. Or better, I'm gonna share a link. ua-cam.com/video/0Ai1bh-D3K8/v-deo.html. This one. It's the reunion of some voice actors from the first game. As you're a fan of the series and the first one is your favourite, I hope you'd watch the entire video and find out the answer for yourself.
PS:- You're into stealth, sooooo, when are we gonna see the original assassin ???

Maybe Dead Cell are boring because KJP deliberately made them largely boring in comparison to MGS's rogue FOXHOUND unit?
