- Not something I typically do, but this trailer did catch my eye this morning, so here we are with a trailer breakdown of Black Myth: Wukong.
This game is still in the early stages of the development by an indie developer based in China. It is likely years away from release, but the footage is amazing and as someone who grew up with A Journey to the West, this story in particular is an exciting one for me.

I'm surprised by how UA-cam algorithm didn't push this to the top results when searching for Black Myth Wukong
Well for me it was in recommended right after I watched the trailer.

I don't really care if they understand the trailer or not. I have no idea about Greek history but I enjoy AC odyssey as hell XD.
It's why I worked hard to find a video that explains to me what I'm seeing, there's so much garbage of people "reacting" to this.
I mean you can't expect the world to know the mythology, I doubt you really know much about western mythologies like Cu Chulainn, tam lin, or Scathach. They're used in other games/media and people are completely ignorant about them.
You sir are amazing as someone who has traveled extensively to China and knows the legend quite well, You by far have broken down and explained the gameplay and story far better than anyone on the entirety of youtube. Thank you for this outstanding video break down.

Western UA-camrs know so little about China (or rather Chinese culture), it is not entire their fault. It is our culture (I am of Chinese ancestry) that we aren't as open as Westerners, thus many things are overly-conserved and not generously shared. Resulting in many great stories, teachings, innovations lost...

I'm subbed to this channel because of how knowledgeable he is of the TW 3 kingdoms stories and backgrounds. So as a 3 kingdoms fan, it's only natural for me to sub to this channel.
I was so hyped to see a Chinese indie game developer tackle this. I have loved A Journey to the West since I was a child, and both the combat and the graphic look outstanding and astonishing. Let's hope that they can finish the game and hope that the end product looks just as good as this trailer.
His heal when he transformed is another reference in the story: with each form, he has an extra life. 72 forms means 72 extra lives.
Is it _actually_ 72 forms or is it infinite? Cuz isn't 72 the number of his abilities?
72 forms where like one of the form would be say animals so he can transform into any animal so it’s basically infinite
I don't know if someone has already said this but "my back pages" is a song written by Bob Dylan. The verse on the page was translated from English lyrics which goes "I was so much older then, i'm younger than that now." It's actually a pretty cool song with a few old rock legend singing on it, but hopefully that helped after two years kekw.
This game has been a long time coming!! It's heartbreaking to see all these reactors yell out "nimbus cloud" and "shadow clone jitsu", but fail to recognize Wukong, or Journey to the West is the inspiration of all that. I have always wanted a TRUE Journey to the West game made by a Chinese developer, so I really hope this game will happen. What scares me is that it looks too ambitious, it would suck if they had to cut out content, or even worse - stuck in development hell for years...
Not to hate on foreigners, but I dislike it when they butcher or mispronounce a lot of words. I know it's not their fault, but it's similar to saying Naruto in the english dub vs japanese dub. When they try to say WuKong but end up saying Woo-Kong instead of something like Woo-Koong.

Those are called jokes, or referencing things they know of. I highly doubt they are unaware that it originates from Wukong.
Chinese mythology is a very complex system. I can explain the basic concept of the chinese mythology.
First the structure of chinese pantheon. Chinese traditional mythology is called Daoism. But after Buddhism come to China, it got absorbed by Chinese pantheon. The supreme god king governing heaven in daoism is jade emperor. But the one who created the universe was the ancient titan pangu. Pangu died from exhaustion soon after he creates the universe. The jade emperor and three pure one control most of the universe after him. They assigned king Yama to govern the underworld. Four great dragon kings to govern the sea. But they all pledge loyalty to jade emperor. Great goddess Nuwa creates humanity after the creation of the world. Buddha is technically the most powerful entity after the death of pangu. Because Buddhism believe he is one with universe. Therefore both Buddhism god and daoism god show respect to each other, and often work together.
Second is the power structure of chinese mythology. The biggest difference between Chinese mythology and western mythology. Is the fact that in Chinese mythology, mortal can become god by practicing daoism or Buddhism. Which many western mythology can’t. This gives people more hope and give them reason to study daoism and Buddhism. However this freedom also give birth to demon(youkai). In chinese the concept of demon is not the same as west. Chinese demon were once mortal creatures who practiced daoism or Buddhism. They use the power in evil way and because corrupted. This goes for animal too. Both human and animals have possibilities of becoming demon. That’s why in journey of west there are tiger demon or fish demon. Due to the fact all youkai Practice daoism or Buddhism. In chinese mythology demon are considered very intelligent beings. Also most demon aim to become god, because in chinese mythology gods are the final stage of evolution.
Now we can talk about monkey king wukong and journey of the west. Monkey king is the hero in chinese mythology. He’s just like Thor in Norse mythology or Hercules in Greek. Monkey king was loved by chinese people. But monkey king wasn’t a righteous figure when he first appeared. Monkey king was a stone monkey who came from the magical stone of goddess nuwa. He was a trickster and a morally neutral existence. He soon became the king of monkeys and learn daoism under a great daoist saint. During the process he learn immortality and become so powerful that almost no god can beat him. After he gain such strength, he went to the dragon king palace and acquired weapons and armor. Went to underworld and delete his name from book of death. He soon make alliance with demon kings in the mortal realm. Making him one of the greatest demon king in existence. When jade emperor discovered this, he give wukong a job in heaven. Which wukong gladly accept. But jade emperor still didn’t quite understand how strong wukong is. So he give him a position as stable boy for taming heavenly horses. Wukong feels extremely humiliated. So he quit the job and give him self the title of great sage equal to heaven in revenge. Heaven sees wukong’s refusal of the job as an insult. But after long discussion, they give wukong the title of great sage equal to heaven and invite him once more to live in heaven. As guardian of immortal peach garden. But monkey screw up his job again, because he end up eating all the peaches and even steal some pills of immortality. That finally angered the jade emperor. He dispatched the entire army of Heaven to arrest wukong. Monkey king was unrivaled in power even for gods. Only the great warrior god Erlang could fight him in equal strength. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xiang Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.
A little correction: in Chinese the word is “yaoguai” , “yaokai” is a Japanese word

Dam y'all hit him with auto correct 😂. Chances are 70 to 80 percent of the people watching this either know of "the journey" or know a little more than basic worldly mythology, and are watching this to see if he knows what we know😂, and the other 20 to 25 precent thinks it's looks cool... We don't talk about the last 5 precent.

Just that I would like to give some more details on the term yaoguai (yaokai).
In Chinese folklore, yaoguai are not necessarily evil and they do not always use their force in evil way, a good example is the White Snake Bai Suzhen: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_White_Snake
And there are also many good yaoguai in the stories of Liaozhai Zhiyi: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_Stories_from_a_Chinese_Studio
And hence I think the terms yaoguai and demon (I assume this is a degenerated term) would be inappropriate to regard them interchangeable.

Best trailer explanation ever. I am a Chinese who has never been a big fan of traditional culture, but I was amazed by the amount of details in the 13 minutes, thanks to this in-depth breakdown. Really look forward to playing this game and exploring the old stories in a new way.
“白骨之后” 中的“白骨”其实指的是他们在腾讯时候的MMO 斗战神（也是西游记背景的游戏）， 这个团队在完成“白骨夫人”版本更新后离开了腾讯。也算是宣告他们的回归。
“白骨” (white bone) in “白骨之后” is actually reference their last update in their previous MMO game 斗战神("Asura“ which is also journey to the west theme), they left Tencent after they completed "White Bone Mistress“ update for the MMO. this is like announcement of their return.
Among this catchphrase and the tones of many writings on their website, I think the dev team is very proud of their work and want to show the world that they are making the best Xiyou video game, and we all can look forward to for a very high quality product.

As I know before the main story of Journey to the West, he tried to reach India 9 times. Of course, without Wu Kong help he failed.

Pretty sure Buddhism came to China from Tibet and Mongolia
Buddhism started arriving in China during the Han dynasty from the naval Silk Road from India. It’s popularity slowly grew as it adapted its teachings to the local culture. If anything Mongolian were not introduced to Buddhism until they conquered China and created the Yuan Dynasty. Then they started to learn about it and they paid pilgrimages to the Tibetan Buddhist sect to learn more. Now the Tibetan Buddhism sect did have a big influence on Buddhism in China but both Tibet and China received Indian influence from roughly the same time period and the teachings diverged into two different branches and even within China today there are farther divergent branches of Buddhism.
Those quotes on their website are probably about a novel called 悟空传.
It's a dark version of Wukong's life, love, and hate, the things he's not supposed to have after becoming a buddha. It gives me the same vibe as the trailer does.
This trailer in a way depict backstory of how the history of the development team worked for Tencent game company were cast off because of Tencent greed for profit without consider for the development team not driven by money or profit did create the 1st wukong game on Tencent game platform. After your breakdown of 2 different Wukong in this trailer, now the game developer wanted to tell they create this game Black Myth out of passion and the love for Wukong in the gameplay and not driven by money or profit constrain the creativity for a best ever Wukong gameplay developed.

FYI, at 28:03 , the one blocking the main character's attack, judging from the ancient chinese wordings on the staff "如意金箍棒“, that character is most likely the Fake Monkey King Wukong(six eared Macaque), on their journey to the west, there are a fake one called Six Eared Macaque "六耳猕猴" that are so powerful that Wukong and the macaque would fight endlessly for decades without a clear victor, there are rumors saying that the one slayed is actually Wukong when they seek advise from Buddha to identify who is the fake one . I think the game's story might starts with the true monkey king Wu Kong taking the revenge on the Six Ear Macaque.
And in 32:10, it is written "白骨之后,重走西游”(The journey to the west continues after the White Bone Demonesses chapter) the phrase seems to derive from a popular phrase "白骨之后,再无战斗神"(The MMO game (战斗神) changed after White Bone Demon chapter), the message probably sent from the developer team to honour an old classic MMO game called 战斗神 that has been brought down by Tencent and the game has been gone downhill with heavy monetization after that, which upsets a lot of loyal player back then. This message seems to say "We will continue the legacy" of the once fallen great game. And some of the staff of this new game's dev team is coming from the 战斗神 game dev. So i doubt this team will ever bend the knee to Tencent again after Tencent ruined their original game.
So basically the idea may be that the Wukong who stops you is actually the fake, having stolen your weapon and hijacked your legend, and you are the real one, on a mission to reclaim your name and take back what is rightfully yours.

So happy to see a lore breakdown of the trailer as opposed to the many, many trailer reactions here on YT. I'm also Chinese, so I am very happy to see a game company truly try to bring Journey to the West to life. While I don't expect this to be as faithful to the book as, say, the 1986 TV series, the attention to detail in just that 13 minute trailer blew me away.

【To understand this game, you have to know this】an over-simplified explain here:
This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west",
and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙".
Practicing Buddhism or Taoism is a way of becoming "god".
Animals can also receive supernature power, and they become "monster/demon/妖怪", not "god".
Here, monster/demon is not always evil, they are just different from humans.
In many stories, the monster can live with humans or even have a marriage with a human.
in those stories, humans are often more evil or stupid or greedy or coward...
The rank or class of this world is roughly like this:
god > monster > human > animal.
This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok.
So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god".
WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god",
he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics.
This contradiction is the source of many re-creations including this game.
Back to this trailer:
This trailer shows a monk tells a story that happens in a temple relic occupied by a group of monster gangsters.
The giant wolf boss at @ is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest,
and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人"
he has a friend who is a black bear. but not shown in this game.
the minor boss at @ is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth,
not a human with a wolf head.
the little potato-like guy at @ is "土地公/local earth god", a kind of minor god.
like a nymph in Greek myth, but not that pretty.
you guys may be confused why there is another monkey king with better weapon and better armor stop us from finishing the boss.
and spend several seconds showing shining gold characters on his stick.
We Chinese guys are quite excited seeing this scene because it gets to the most suspenseful part of the story:
whether the monkey king who finally becomes the god is the real monkey king who born from the stone?
(Is the hero at the end of the journey the same person when he starts the journey?)
(are we still us when we grow up/old ?)
yes, there are multiple monkey kings and multiple explanations.
you can even take them as the "ego", the "id", the "superego" of the monkey king.
but it is best to let the game itself to explain it.
if you look carefully enough,
you will find that the storyteller(at the beginning and end of the trailer) himself is an old "monkey" too.
the floating belt behind him indicating that he is a "god".

The Golden Cicada might be in relation to Sanzang , in there previous life Sanzang is one of the Buddha's disciple , Jin Chanzi , mean Golden Cicada
Man the combat looks incredible smooth and pretty polished for something in pre-alpha that’s pretty impressive.. Especially from an Indie company.. I have done beta tests on a lot of triple A titles and there aren’t many that are as polished as this.

So u know the story.... Yessss the game looks so fricking promising, especially thay battle in clouds, oh my god the goosebumps I got when that scene came up
The Golden cicada could also have another meaning as the elderly monk said "some say he already died on his way to the West" perhaps it's implying that this is the body that still has life in it after he achieved Buddhahood, the Earth Deity even says he looks so much like him, the title is also revealing as there are different interpretations of the outcome of the battle between the 6 eared monkey and the real Wukong, it could be this is actually the real Wukong and teh other one si the 6 eared monkey.
My dad has another interpretation he believes the 6 eared monkey is an aspect of the Monkey King himself and that he's a distillation of all that is evil in the monkey king similar to the valeyard from Doctor Who and seeing as Buddha has the universe in the palm of his hand only he could discern who was real and who wasn't and to be honest they both could be seen as equally real. This version of Monkey might be another aspect of the Monkey.
Another fun fact of golden cicada: Wukong's master Xuan Zang was actually the reincarnation of Jin Chan Zi (jin-golden, chan-cicada), the disciple of Buddha.
Interesting point I also noticed and then found this post with similar view.
I was wandering if the retelling could be that there was no "Master" at all in the "journey" and it was just the "monkey" all along (or the golden cicada form shown in the trailer was ... "acquired", similar to how the wolf form was shown later, which implies ...) . If "Golden Cicada" was actually the monkey (from the trailer), then who was the "Wu Kong" in the well-known story? :)
I could wrong, but I thought the insect form the monkey king usually use is the mosquito.

i think the first monkey gameplay is probably his clone and the guy in the beginning is maybe wukongs human shapeshift because of his beard and nails
The end logo 黑神话 “black myth” is not wax seal. It’s traditional Chinese water color painting red stamp, normally made of a stone and the words are carved on the stone.
that ending BGM is just ~aho, perfect
36:55 actually it's not strange that the game/the dev makes a quote of Taoism text. The Journey to the West is not Buddhism theme only, it's half based on Taosim and half based on Buddhism, in fact the hidden line of the story and the history the story reflected is the merge and conflict between Taosim as the indigenous religion/idealogy and the Buddhism as a then foreign religion/ideology in ancient China . You can notice that many of the antagonistic demons/monsters in the story are actually Taosim/Buddhism mythical creatures or even the ex mounts or ex apprentices of Taoism/Buddhism figuress. And the monkey king himself is very Taosim-ish, his nature, his origin, his birth are very much like Taosim and other Chinese native mythologies.

Such a cool and mystical setting, especially for someone new to this legend. Amazing game design as well! I hope they find the people they are looking for
I think the Demons aren't actually Demons. It's more or less the public that thinks of them as demons. I think they're called something like 妖人. And they might be the closest relatives of 妖怪(Youkai, or Yauguai for Chinese) in the Japanese myths. Although I might be mistaken cuz 妖人 probably exist in Japan too.
What I'm basically getting at here is, Youkai are very normal and are basically no different from humans in Shinto, so think of 妖人 as just your average dudes, but with a bad rep.
In the begining of the trailer, If you pay more attention to that wall, you will find one more interesting thing besides lion demon, elephant demon and hawk demon. on the mural, look closely to the upper left corner of the hawk demon, there is a Buddha sitting quietly there watiching 3 demons slaughter the people and rob babies away from their parents. why he did not save those people? Because, he's the master of those 3 demons, what they did was his command. In fact, if you read the book "Journey to the West" you will know that most of all demons defeated or killed by monkey king in the book are the pets of Gods and Buddhas. After you finished reading, you'd have a conclusion that Gods and Buddhas are not exactly the way they seem to be, they are not kind, righteous, mercy and compassionate.
The author of the book, Mr Wu used Gods and Buddhas to refer to the nobles, governments and emperors of the ancient Chinese dynasty at that time, evil monsters to refer to those officials and soldiers who attached to the old empires, and those who yearned for freedom and equality, like Monkey King and good demons refer to the people of the lowest rank. He expressed the distortions and deformities of society through this ironic way of writing. For the game, I think the main character or protagonist in this trailer is Sun Xiaosheng or 孙小圣, not the real Wukong or Monkey King, the one who blocked his staff is the real Wukong or Monkey King, and for the first part of the game, I am guessing is based on the Post Journey to the West or 后西游记, which is one of the three sequels of " Journey to the West " (the other two are " Continued Journey to the West " and " Journey to the West "). The main plot of the book is that during the reign of Tang Xianzong, the scriptures obtained by Tang Xuanzang were distorted by the greedy monks. The Tathagata sealed the scriptures, and Tang Xuanzang selected scriptures to go to Lingshan to obtain the truth. Tang Xuanzang selected the Dadian monk (Tang Banxu), and gathered Sun Xiaosheng, Zhu Yijie, and novice monks. The four masters and disciples finally arrived at Lingshan to see the Buddha and obtain the true understanding.

The little monkey grows stronger during the journey, with the help and guidance of Wukong, and experienced almost all major events that Wukong has. I believe he also comprehended the Enlightenment of Budhism after all these, and became settled in the end.

But in detail of the story in Journey to the West “monster or demon” has a one and similar goal in mind is they all want it to eat the flesh of “Tong Monk” because if if i'm not mistaken Tong Monk is 10 incarnation of Buddha. He flesh can give the monster or demon immorality and increase their strength both magical and physical 100x. That’s why demon throughout in different region in the journey wants to eat him and his has no magical power just a human flesh. That’s where Wukong comes in and he probably one of the most power his strength and magical in the story, WuKong have 72 transformation power, along with other three colleagues .Pig 32 transformations power. Not sure the other, I think Sandy has 14 transformation abilities. But each apprentice has their own personal struggles as well. Monkey is always hard blood and into violence and still gotta the breast instinct in him (not sure if Monkey key has any gender he was born from a stone, i assume is a he), pig is always into lust and arrogant, Sandy need to redeem his cannibalism sins that he done in the past. It’s a journey that not just get the scroll but individual training as well

I hope you can make an other video telling people the hidden Buddhist philosophy (known as the Three Poisons) behind Journey to the West. They are Greed, Hatred and Delusion which basically are human natures. How are the three main characters' names, characteristics and behaviors related to these. And how they transformed from demos to gods after experiencing all the difficulties and understanding themselves during the journey. Cause I have a strong feeling that the game may want people to understand these most important messages after seeing Wukong blocked that attack.

I just finished reading the Korean webtoon god of highschool which is strongly inspired by the journey for the west so I may not know the full journey to the west but I got the elements of Wukong like how he puts his extending staff in his ear eventually he gains the armor the cloud or “nimbus” he flies on and he wants revenge on the heavens for I’m guessing killing his allies from a journey to the west

The old storyteller is fake Wukong I think, cause the real Wukong ate elixir, immortal peach from heaven and human shaped fruits he 100%won’t age anymore, before he join the Journey to the west, he was at least 500 years old. His appearance wasn’t change, looks exactly the same.
