  • The Broadway Dance Band was formed in Sekondi-Takoradi, Western Ghana, in 1958 by the Nigerian trumpeter Sam Obote also known as Sammy Obot. The big band, run by the management of the Zenith Hotel in Takoradi, was first of its kind in Africa.
In 1962 trumpeter Mac Tontoh (1940-2010) joined the band. He was later co-founder of the legendary, trailblazing crossover band Osibisa.
In 1964 the name Broadway was changed to Uhuru, which went on to play big band jazz.
