In addition to the wonderful music, choreography and costumes that add so much to the visual beauty, I also appreciate the respectful cinematography. There are close ups, but always of the whole dancers, and also switching back to views of the whole stage. Especially there is no merciless chopping up of the dancers bodies [thank god]. This is an example of great collaboration between choreographer and film maker.
I completely agree! That struck me very strongly when I first watched this, and even though I was in a rush, I made time to add a brief note in my comment. However, even if I had had more time, I could not have expressed it as clearly as you. Now, watching it again, I realised that for me, it is because it is replicating just about exactly how I would have watched it (ideally from the front row of the Grand Tier at Covent Garden!): almost always full stage, occasionally looking at a small group, and, rarely, using opera glasses to see individuals close up. And I enjoyed it just as much the second time: definitely on my playlist.

His three great Dutch artists, dancers and set designers have shown with their high art that in the vast ballet world there have always been and will always be only a few who are blessed to hear and see Beethoven dancing. A composer who created, among other things, 48 (!) dances for orchestra, not counting the piano, two ballets, etc. What a joy to see the beautiful and spiritual faces of dancers from all over the world, their subtle, full of high intelligence and dignity facial expressions. This is the human universe that Beethoven suffered and embraced. All the creators and performers of the Beethoven triptych, including the Orchestra, maestro and pianist, , accomplished incomparably more than a brilliant performance: a true revelation for all time. I haven't seen Grosse Fuge for many years. It is just as striking and brilliant as I remember. I am thrilled to see it again, so wonderfully danced, and well filmed. I really had no time to watch it but I couldn't leave, and there were tears in my eyes at the end. The other ballets will have to wait for another time.

I'm loving the inversion of the costumes in the first dance, with the men in very cleverly-tailored ankle-length "skirts" and the women in fully divided garments. The shapes created by the flowing skirt fabric over the strong men's movements are very expressive, and really give a notable element in the presentation. Very nicely done.

I love to see new works in modern ballet, and I have grown bored with the same old ballets. This is what brings me back to the theater to see works like this. bravo to cast and everyone who had a hand of putting this production together.

I found a mismatch between the dramatic music at the beginning and undramatic dance rather odd. Anybody else noticed this? Perhaps it's intentional as it's hard to tell without seeing it all (spoiler, it didn't improve). The piano piece though was much fun to watch, dynamic and humorous.

Jubię tę nowoczesną formę baletu, ale faceci w spódniczkach to jest już takie wtórne, że robi się oklepane. W drugim balecie kostiumy przy dłuższym oglądzie wyglądają dość tandetnie. Zespół wspaniały.
For the first dance, beautiful music and skilled dancers - but the director is definitely an uncomfortable guy. I really didn't like it, as a woman. Glad it's free here on UA-cam.
Nothing like destroying Beethoven with modern/contemporary dance (as always ending up rolling on the floor) and a misguided woke message. Having said that Hans van Manen is one of the best choreographers. His mastery of blending music and dance into one is superb.
The male dancers are not really dancing they are running around on stage, with their silly skirts on and unfortunately the women are not in sink … I found this very lacking
Becourse you can see her body nearly naked , man love it . The dancers look fine in the skirts? 😮 For the danceres wourd't it also nicely wear scarfs around ? Like ISADORA DANCUN ?

Grosse Fugue coreography is a wonder, and these dancers channel so beautifully the mystery, the joy, the alchemy of the sublime music. Wow!
