Just a quick video showing how I replaced the rear Subwoofer in my daughter's 2004 Toyota Avalon. This would be the same for years 2000-2004. The stock JBL speaker was making a very annoying rattling noise. The foam was completely torn and crumbling away from the speaker cone.
I have used the foam speaker repair kit on a different vehicle in the past, and it worked great, but this speaker was a little cheaper, so I thought it was worth a try.
I am happy with how it turned out. It sounds good, and no more rattling or bad noises.
It's a little tricky getting the speaker mounting frame out from under the rear deck lid cover, but just be patient and try several different angles until it comes out.
I have heard that you can remove the rear seat to take out the deck lid, but I thought that would be too much work so I did it this way.
You will just need a screwdriver and/or drill and some small screws (I used small self-tapping screws), and a 10mm socket wrench to remove the plastic speaker frame or housing.
I did not solder the wires to the new speaker. You may want to solder it, or you may do like I did in the video and use some wire clips to connect it to the factory wiring harness.
    Thanks for watching!

Saw replacement speaker options on a VERY popular car audio video site that shall remain nameless… Most affordable was $299. I thought, this will be an ok present for Christmas for my daughter’s 2004 Avalon. But for s&g I decided to see how it was done so I did a search and yours was the first result. And then you had links for much more affordable replacements! I paused the video and ordered one immediately! Then I finished watching. Used the Boss speaker you did. Sounds pretty good to me!! Thank you so much!!

      Hey Joel,
I think the 2000-2004 Avalons are great cars. They are pretty easy to work on, and very reliable. Replacement parts are pretty inexpensive too.
My daughter and nephew both drive them. Also, it's much cheaper to insure than a newer car.
      I think you'll like it.

I bought the Boss sub you used, then used #8 self tapping screws to drill the holes in the plastic frame. I removed the self tappers and then I used #8 x 3x8" sheet metal screws to hold the sub in place.(Self tapping screws were too long and hit the body of the car). I soldered the original connector from the factory JBL sub to the terminals on the Boss replacement subwoofer and it plugs in directly with the factory connector on the harness. It took me awhile to break in the sub but now she's sounding really nice. It really fills in the missing deeps in the overall sound with some nice bass. I am missing one of the push on clips so I get an occassional rattle, that's one clip I'm going to have to find. I did put an LED bulb in the center mounted stop lamp because mine was toasty. After I had installed the Boss unit, I noticed they also sell a JBL subwoofer for about $50, I wonder if it would fit. I like how this Boss sub has a poly cone and rubber surrounds, it seems pretty well constructed for the price.

One thing I purchased at best buy which really helped was a speaker harness by metra part number 72-8104. came with a white clip and pos/neg connectors that slide right onto the new speaker. @trance dj---- The amplifier for the JBL Toyota Avalon will either be under the Drivers seat or the passenger seat. It depends on what year your Avalon is. Mine is a 2006 Toyota Avalon XLS and the Factory Amplifier is under the Passenger seat. You can look underneath from the front seat to get a better view. That is how I found mine. For yours looking from the back seat or back of front seats may be what you have to do. Hope this helps you out. I never changed mine as it worked just fine powering 12 speakers before age made them blow out.

I never saw any links. I don't know what watt sub woofer the JBL is to begin with. So not sure what to replace it with. Also, if I get a higher watt speaker, will I need a different amp? Does anyone still have the original JBL speaker in a 2004? Maybe you bought the same one or fixed the foam. I'd like to know how the original sounds. Mine is all crackly like Dan's. I just want a loud system with great bass because I listen to rap/hip hop mostly. The one thing I hate is there is no Bluetooth or aux to play music from phone. I did purchase one of those blue tooth things that goes in lighter, but it's not as loud as radio. Would still sound pretty good though with speaker repaired or replaced!

Thank you for the video. We got the suggested replacement speaker, put it in per your instructions, and it is working! Not super powerful but works just fine.
Just something to add, if you have someone helping, they can help push the old speaker out from the trunk and then help pull the new one in from the trunk. Interestingly, the hardest part for us was screwing the speaker back in. It was hard to align the holes. But, we were able to do it with some work.

      Hi Scott,
The speaker I installed actually sounds pretty good in the car. My daughter is still driving this Avalon around and I asked her about it, and she thinks it sounds good too.
I guess that is mostly compared to the completely blown JBL speaker that was in there...
I am sure the people you've talked to are correct in that it's underpowered etc., but it doesn't sound distorted to me.
I bought this speaker based on other people's Amazon reviews who had put it in the same vehicle with the same positive results that I had. There were quite a few people that put it into the 2000-2004 Avalon to replace the factory speaker and said it sounded good.
Whatever speaker you decide to install, please post your results on here in the comments so it will be helpful to others.

Just so you know, those fucking Pyle speakers don't fit at all. WAY too big. After I pissed around with this for 2 hours I finally realized there is no fitting them in that space where the other one went. Better take that link down. I just wasted 50 bucks.

I don’t have access to a drill; do I NEED to drill the speaker into the mount? Thank you!
