    That was amazing. I thought (read somewhere) you had to remove the rear seat, pillars, and rear deck to pull the speaker. Very nice. I already replaced the door speakers with 4ohm DS18 mid range and they sound amazing. Can’t wait to do this. Thank you very much for sharing

    I know most people like quick disconnect terminals. I can't say I'm a fan. Even with a tight grip, it's a subwoofer. The causation will cause the terminals to loosen and eventually come off. I prefer soldered wires because they're going nowhere, no matter how hard those subs shake. Either way, excellent video. I'm gonna use this as reference when I replace the sub in my 97.

      I have one question, I have just acquired a 2000 LS300 where all the speakers are screwed, there is no sound at all from that sub woofer but other speakers sound like high tweeters so should I purchase all new speakers for the front and rear doors or purchase the kits and just rebuild them. Next time you want to change out that rear woofer you can cut two tennis balls in half and use them to hold the carpet section up for better clearance and remove them afterwards.

    • @ClintHolland

      @@pythias9465 That's probably a good idea. I actually ended up replacing the front door speakers as well eventually and it made a huge improvement, more so than the sub itself. And thanks for the tip.

    !!!Update most aftermarket 8 inch require much more power than the factory amp can push even if you find a 2ohms subwoofer. Best solution 2011 and up Chevy equinox or Chevy Cobalt ss. Use a pioneer 8 inch subwoofer that is 2 ohms. On the equinox you can remove the woofer from the OEM subbox or just mount the box to rear back seat in trunk and fold down the center arm rest for more bass

      Try out www.crutchfield.com and put in your make and model and it will only show you speakers that are compatible with your system. My guess is to stick with 4 ohm speakers but try their speaker selection out for finding one that is definitely compatible.

From my research on forums its seems i'm not the only one to have had this issue, apparently the stock sub ran around 40-60w rms and thats all the the amp was designed to handle so swapping that for a 300w sub fried the amp. All the other speakers still worked, but the short in the amp created a draw on the car's electrical system which in turn fried my alternator.

    I've got all the tools and know-how to mechanically modify this "enclosure/mount", but I'm wondering if replacing the subwoofer is all you have done? Are you using the stock amp and headunit as well as stock speakers? I've been researching this for a few weeks now and I'm not sure which direction I want to go. The subwoofer in my ES300 is flawless, but I know it could be better since I'm upgrading the head unit. These Lexus vehicles sound systems are a real pain to alter I'm finding out.

    • @7777777goldenarm
      @7777777goldenarm 8 років тому

      I also forgot to ask--do you recommend having a barrier such as foam or rubber between the subwoofer and the mounting bracket you used the Dremel on? I've seen that done before so the windows/rear view mirror vibrates less.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  8 років тому

      My Lexus is pretty unmodified. I plan on handing it down to my son so I haven't done a lot. It started like this. I turned up the bass and volume one day to mess with my son and you could literally hear when the sub tore. So I decided it had to be replaced since the audio sounded horrible after that. I replaced it and it sounded better than ever. Just last week I replaced the rear speakers with some Polk Audio ones. Honestly, not much difference there. My goal is to replace the front speakers next and then replace the unit. My main need is a system with Bluetooth. I listen to a ton of audiobooks and such while driving and it's a pain to keep using my bluetooth headset. So yes, replacing the sub was worth it. But I didnt notice much difference just replacing the rear speakers. And my old rear speakers were pretty torn up.

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  8 років тому

      And yes, I did put a foam insert between the sub and bracket. My sub came with one so I just used that one.

      Nice video. Instead of bluetooth, I'm running a tape adaptor to get an aux in for the phone. With a phone mount it works well to play music or podcasts and run traffic apps like waze. The sound from the adaptor is pretty clean. Speaking on the phone is a little tougher though, as I end up just yelling at the phone on the mount.

      My other idea was to just replace all the speakers and head unit and use the factory amp and see how majestic that sounds. If need more, maybe an amp in the future but I’m sure that’ll sound pretty darn amazing brother.

    How are you handling the wiring? I ordered the comp r and it has an input for each voice coil. So i have 4 places to connect wires on the sub and only two wires coming from the car. If i were to bridge the two inputs (one wire from the car on each input, one wire connecting the two remaining inputs) wouldnt that make the total impedance 4ohms?

      I am. The only thing I have replaced with aftermarket items are the speakers. And they are pretty easy to replace as well. I bought mine from crutchfield.com and they came with the replacement speaker connectors which like you imagined, are easy to replace by just cutting the old ones off and crimping new ones. I really like this Kicker one. It is a 2 Ohm and has worked fine for over a year now. I went with the 2 Ohm because that is what the old one way. I would suspect yours is identical. You really want it matched to what the amp is expecting. If you go lower, say replace a 4 ohm with a 2 ohm, you could blow the amp. If you go higher, say replace a 2 ohm with a 4 ohm, it's doubtful you will do any damage but you also won't get the result you are looking for.
