Already one of the top 5 magic books I own. Must own for any serious magic performer. There is no way you walk away after reading this book and not come away learning and USING one idea. Thanks Jeff for another great magic book review.
I am an coin magician and i can perform 1hr of performance just by using selective coins routines from mu repertoire. Will this book help me go to the stage. I also perform mentalism and classical magic.
Yes, the concepts are true no matter what you perform. I'm not suggesting you could perform an hour of coins on stage, but John's thoughts will help you take what you already know and move it to a bigger venue. Hope that helps!
A great review Jeff. I liked the writing style and the content. I got the book at MagiFest and got a chance to read it during thanksgiving break. Love the tricks used in the book.
It’s a beautiful book! I opted for the Deluxe edition because for the first time the difference was reasonably priced. Thank you for the review. I’ll be digging into it soon.
I have magic and Showmanship and practical mental magic and what lies inside among others royal road etc, should I get approaching magic, maximum entertainment, stage by stage, one degree and bob cassidy, which i can't find anywhere, ? Looking for a complete book, good theory/advice, ideas for open, mix close etc
Oh,it is, trust me, I have nothing to win if you buy it and nothing to lose if you don't... But if you want another quality magic book for your library,do yourself a favour and buy one!!! I have already bought mine, and definitely, didn't regret it!
Fantastic review Jeff! I was wondering, would you recommend this book for someone who only does mentalism? What about for someone new to the world of magic and mentalism who doesn't have much performing experience and/or an act?
Yes, for sure! Although the acts and specific tricks you will learn may not be your style, that's not the point. The point is learning how to take what you already know and turn it into a complete act. Definitely recommended to someone starting out!
Superb review, Jeff. As always. Question: Does John discuss his fab mentalism routine, Five Guys, in which he matches spectators to drawings they made while his back was turned?
I don't think so. It sounds like a version of Larry Becker's excellent Sneak Thief. There's a great version in Handsome Jack, etc. by John Lovick called "Chic Thief". Hope that helps 👍
I don't think of one as being superior to the other, but from a logistical standpoint, anyone can perform close-up magic. You typically have to be invited to perform stage magic. 🤷🏻
As someone who did close up magic for 7 years before starting to do stage shows, I think its a fair mindset to have. Close up magic, by the nature of being a more social environment, allowing for more direct interaction with the individuals you perform for, is much more forgiving in many ways than stage magic is. In close up you can interact with everyone involved to equal degrees, on Stage you have to play for a crowd without being able to get to know everyone first. Skripting is much more important, and visibility is an issue often not as concerning in close up magic. I still love close up magic more, but a stage show presents certain challenges that are a natural progression to what you learn doing close up magic for audiences.
Thank you for reviewing my book, Jeff! What an honor to be featured on your UA-cam show, which I'm already a fan of.
Thank *you*, John for sharing your show(s), tricks, theory, jokes, and more with the magic community!!
Respect and love from Greece?!!

Loved getting to hang with him at Magifest! I also picked up his book Encore, which will definitely be worth a read when it comes out!
Nice. What’s Encore cover?
Not sure...yet! 😉
Erudite Magic I had no idea another was coming.
Well explained as always! Nice job!

@@EruditeMagic Thanks, now I just have to learn some mentalism tricks in order to be able to put together an act using what he teaches! 🤣
Is it worth it even if I don’t do stage work
It looks pretty too, do you think he has it on his website? Does he have a site? Is not on vanishing or penguin, let me check with Mr. Don!!!
I believe it's still carried by VI...

Why is close up magic seen as a step below stage? Your video opens with the word "graduating.." just trying to understand
