    Verve circa 1992-1993 were the coolest band of the decade. The early singles/B-sides (All in the Mind, One Way to Go, Man Called Sun, She's a Superstar, Feel, Gravity Grave, Endless Life) and Storm in Heaven are the Verve at their psychedelic peak. Nick McCabe's guitar on this version of The Sun, The Sea is absolutely mindblowing! Storm in Heaven was the high, Northern Soul and Urban Hymns were the inevitable crash.

    • @infinite_vortex
      @infinite_vortex 6 років тому +6

      agree, there's nothing touch 92-93 era Verve. there's still moments of greatness on A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns. but they are moments, fleeting...

    • @jarg8
      @jarg8 6 років тому +4

      RainyDayMerman No one can deny Storm in Heaven's raw perfection. But Northern Soul is littered with exceptional songwriting and an emotional honesty that cannot be ignored. Urban Hyms is a mixed bag though it's overall very well constructed (with the exception of Bittersweet Symphony which sucks). Meanwhile, Forth had some amazing moments with the likes of Columbo and Love is Noise along with a few lost tracks like Muhammad Ali. Even so, what we lost in the early nineties Verve is undeniable. They were unquestionably too good to be true.

    Nick McCabe is like a guy who creates balloon animals with sound, except way more elegant and complex than that. You know what I mean? You ask him to create something and BOOM, sound sculpture. Like what he plays at the end of the first line of South Pacific 28:07 - it's the sound of one of those amazing curling waves that people surf on. Like, Ashcroft gives him a theme and he sculpts his sounds to fit the idea. He's a fucking genius and SO SO underrated. The two of them collaborating is basically the best thing ever (not to put down the rest of the band!). Ashcroft's melodies and poetry combined with McCabe's interstellar space-voyaging is heaven, to me.
    I sat literally gape-jawed the first time I watched this performance, unable to believe what I was hearing/seeing. You can see the audience reacting the same way at certain points, just stunned. At their best this band made it up to a higher level of existence, and that's why they're my favourite. So much love for Verve.
    (If you have the opportunity, watch this gig while stoned - your head will fall off.)

      @@icouch it got a lot of attention especially the whole indie, nme scene at the time, the music press thought they were God's but i know what you mean.
      To make it mainstream they had to become more of simple pop band banging out 5 chord rock songs with McCabe taking more of a back seat which was criminal.

    the amazing thing about ASIH, in my opinion, is the clear aural landscapes it paints. there is a LOT of things happening on each track; i could go on and on. lots of tones, effects , assorted instruments, production trickery. each track is like a painting or movie. for example : "star sail" makes me thinks of asteroids, nebulas..., "already there" sounds aquatic, with images of sea creatures, "beautiful mind" is like a fairy tale snowscape,etc....

    The real beauty of this and their 92 performances is that they were still trying to find their feet and develop their tracks, so the compositions of the tracks changed every performance and were more improvised. Once they recorded the tracks for the album, the composition of the tracks remained the same for live performances, resulting in less improvisations overall.

    • @WyldeRatttz
      @WyldeRatttz 7 років тому +5

      I think it certainly can. What was the common element between these two eras? Entheogens: acid and weed in the 60s, and acid, weed, and ecstasy in the late 80s/early 90s. Psychedelics are good for the brain, and for creativity especially. Give artists access to them and better art results, as we've seen. Legalisation is coming... it's happening here where I live and will spread, and a huge boom of creativity will result.
      The whole band in this vid are almost certainly tripping hard on acid (and probably some other things), and the results are pretty amazing!

      @@WyldeRatttz LOFL. Apparently you've never tried to play music in front of a crowd while on acid. It's EXTREMELY difficult. The fact that they have kept the song structures intact means they CLEARLY are *not* on acid. Definitely some good weed likely, though.

      My friend, you need to acquaint yourself with Phish’s Big Cypress festival. 2 days - 12/30 and 12/31/99 where they did 3 sets the first day, and 2 the 2nd. But the 2nd set on 12/31/99 went from 11:35pm to sunrise. Non stop.
      I love this show and it’s fucking awesome but Big Cypress is objectively the greatest concert ever. The band’s quality through the whole weekend is unprecedented. Basically all my favorite versions of songs come from that festival.
      I suggest you start with the 12/30/99 Tweezer because the jam becomes a celestial space wash groove just like these guys :)
