- Many weapons in Tolkien's world are named for their appearance, renown or infamy. Thank you all for watching, let me know what you all think about these weapons in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!
The first picture of Andúril is provided by Brendan Olszowy of Fable Blades www.fableblades.com in collaboration with Jeffrey Robinson of www.bronzebyjeffreyjrobinson.com. The picture of Gurthang (at 1:36) is also provided by Brendan Olszowy.

“This axe was so powerful” *shows picture of steel axe from Skyrim*
Sam Whalen totally epic fail and yet so awesome
If you have 100 smithing and some potions you can make those steel weapons hit harder than daedric, at least with the smithing overhaul I had.
I used to be an adventurer. But then I took a steel ax to the knee
It was legendary....
Fun fact there are many of this Tolkien universe named weapons that use the steel axe of Skyrim to talk about Dramborleg
Wait, what about “A Good Sword”? So named by Aragorn himself before the battle of Helms Deep.
Thanks for the good laugh my freind
Haha good one! But seriously, he has a point.
@@MentalGymnastics1980 no, this is the books, not the movie

Yoystan you forgot Sam’s pots and pans. Killing Orcs since TA 3019
Cleet Torres 3018 really.
Be careful and remember the effective range of a cast iron frying pan is 100 ft without bacon fat and 200 ft with bacon fat.
Sting's original name was Maegnas. It is inscribed on the blade in elvish. "Maegnas is my name I am the spiders bane." It was a special blade forged specifically for killing spiders in response to Ungoliant poisoning the Great Trees.
It wasn't, actually. Bilbo named it Sting in the common tongue first, then had the Elves engrave its name translated into Elvish onto it.
That said, it probably was made for killing Spiders alongside other blades of Gondolin.
Anduril was a dwarven blade? I did not know that! That's amazing, to think a dwarven weapon brought down Sauron. That's a proud day in their history.
Dwarven made, Elven enhanced, and wielded by Men to defeat Sauron. Nice
Anduril was originally an ancient dwarven blade (forged sometime during the first age), and was reforged by the elves for Aragorn. They probably were proud but I think they’d be more proud of angrist since the shards of that blade managed to cut morgoth after freeing a silmaril from morgoths crown

Don't you mean Narsil?
That random Steel Battleaxe from Skyrim at 2:12 lol.
Bingo, that's why I clicked on it... was like, that's the ax on Skyrim LOL!
Kind of looks like the battle ax I bought in Germany... made in Spain... okay it was tourist souvenir, at least it wasn't made outside Europe like China or Mexico or US LOL!
I recognize it.
Love listening to your videos before going to sleep. Not that you make me sleepy :p

Lololol
This is my favorite topic in fantasy stories. I can't put my finger on why but artifacts are just so cool. Thanks for the video!
I agree, it's just something about it. It creates some sort of a complexity within the world building and makes the world more immersive.
Yeah, I was thinking about it more. I think it's because it builds a more tangible history. It's like, fantasy archeology, which makes it feel more alive.
FANTASICK one reason I got so many mods in skyrim, it's so cool to see or wield a weapon that has a history of it's own.
Yeah same my favourite weapon was Ringil as it reminds me of Chillrend from Skyrim AND OBLIVION
Hey everyone, I just have a small correction to make. Frodo’s Barrow-Blade broke at the Fords of Bruinen, not Weathertop. Also, I wanted to add that Gurthang was foretold to be the weapon to finally defeat Melkor at the end of days in Dagor Dagorath and Belthronding was the bow of Beleg. I will always try to correct my mistakes and add more information where I can. Thank you all as always!
And that Elendil's sword Narsil at 2nd age shined light of moon and sun before getting broken!
Doesn’t Turin defeat Melkor at Dagor Dagorath and not Glaurung
He does also kill glaurung before he tells him that his wife is actually his sister and then he takes his own life with same sword with what he kills Morgoth at Dagor Dagorath :3
jari Laukkanen It would be great to have a video on Dagor Dagorath
Glaurung doesn't die at the Dagor Bragollach, and Turin isn't even alive at the time of the battle. The Elf King Fingolfin was the one who faced Melkor at the end of the Dagor Bragollach, and managed to wound his leg with his sword, before being killed. The Dagor Bragollach takes place 45 years before the death of Turin, his sister, and Glaurung, though Glaurung did fight at the battle.
After discovering swords from the fall of Gondolin, I would have searched every inch of that troll cave looking for Anguirel, on the chance that it was not taken from Maeglin when captured by Orcs before the attack on the city. At the least, called out to the sword in the hope of a reply in the cave.
Such beautiful weapons. I own a few of the United Cutlery official movie versions. Narsil is just incredible.
I love your videos so much, Tolkien did a lot to help me through a really dark time in my life so watching your videos and learning even more makes me happier than ever. Please keep it up.
Thank you
A couple of remarks. Frodo's sword from the Barrow-downs wasn't broken in the attack on Weathertop. It happened later, after Frodo crossed the Bruinen on the way to Rivendell pursued by the Nazgul.
Guthwine should be read as g-oo-th-v-ee-n-e. Old English.
The best thing about this video is that you didn't even take a breath between words, it all rolled of our tongue. .
absolutely excellent! !!
Cool video, my first from you! Just one thing for future reference: The Mormegil was a name used by the elves of Nargothrond for Turin himself, not a name for the sword he carried. They called him "The Black Sword" because he was so easily recognized by Gurthang. It did also fit well with his dark mood and countenance. Cheers! Thanks for the videos!
There is something almost magical about swords, they have some sort of traditional/historic value and charm that no other weapons seem to hold. Right up to our day and age!
Because, my brother, they are the weapons of kings and knights.
Funny how the chief gods wield spears or spear like weapons.
Funny thing is spears or spear like weapons are wielded by chief or the king of the gods. Odin and his spear Zeus and his thunderbolts Indra and Vajra or thunderbolt. Even by humans the most coveted and mysterious is the spear of Longinus.
I heard that 'Angrist' and 'Sting' are the same weapon, the notch that appears on the former after removing the Silmarils from Morgoths crown is also mentioned at times on Sting. And given the size and style I don't think it's impossible that this is true.
This might be fictitious but still an interesting theory.
Ollie W That is awesome!!! I’ve never heard of that theory before, but it definitely makes sense! Thanks for letting us know. Wow, I’ll pay closer attention to both weapons next time I read about them!
I'm not sure where I heard it tbh - having wrote my previous comment I can't find the source - oh well
That's a dope theory sir! And look at you! Not trying to take credit for it; the Elves would call you an Elf-friend! Lol
Well angrist broke so I don’t think so...
So did Narsil.
Wow when I said could you do this video I thought you would do it a month from now or something. Not what two weeks after you responded. Thanks yosten I really enjoyed
Yep Skip Interval?
“Apparently- this axe was so powerful, that...” forged by the mighty dragonborn in the fires of the sky forge.
with the right potions you could make it so it cleaves Melkor itself in half with a light swing.
I’ve been building a forge in my backyard, so hopefully I can make replicas of some of the weapons in the video
Yeah what he said
WELLIS May the Gods smile upon you sir!
As a Smithy, you, no doubt know something about the myth and legend of this historic trade. I was trying to encourage a student years ago, with low confidence and decided to research his surname: Wieland. In doing this I learned about Der Volund Smith, the Germanic Smith god and lord of elventine, also called the Waylan or Wayland. His story and connection to THE sword.... Yes, my friend THAT sword, left me giddy for days. May your foundry forge many legendary weapons!
Those Barrow blades were totally dope
how is that coming along?
Back from work and you uploaded a video, that feels so good. Thank you yoystan !
Anduril or Narsil is one of my favorite objects in Middle Earth!
It symbolizes the broken genealogy of the kings, and how it got restored.
This is why I prefer that Aragorn gets Anduril in Return of the King, because it fits the title. The sword gets reforged, and given to Aragorn. The same does the kings genealogy.
AlternateMovies Same here, how they used the sword is one of only two changes I actually LIKE about the movies!
TheFanFlipp'nTastics What other changes do you like? I’m not saying the movies are better than the books, but not everything works as well in movies as it does in books. So I like all of the changes the movie made, because they are wise choices.
Except that it's kind of stupid how Elrond can just teleport to Rohan to give it to him.
dowingba in the extended edition Elrond rides to Rohan after the sword is reforged!
I know. And he gets there in like a couple days. It makes no sense if you look at the map of Middle-earth.
I never knew the sword of kings was forged all the way back in the 1st age. Man I love this history
And the only weapon to be forged by dwarves and reforged by elves.
Would've loved the mention that Anglachel/Gurthang/Mormegil actually spoke with a voice, maybe a separate video can be made about it?
Didn’t know that what book is it in?

I will slay thee swiftly.' This you'll find near the end of the chapter.

Can you do a history on the Tooks?
I was going to “like” this comment, but it has reached 33 likes - a very respectable number. Almost as respectable as eleventy-one.
It is 42 now... so I'm not liking it, because that's the meaning of life
Well, someone made it 43 so I'll go ahead and take it to 44, so it can blow our heads clean off.
It's not your fault :(
How about a history of the Baggins, Took, and Brandybuck families?
Personally i always loved the named Narsil, i prefer to call it that because of it being Elendil's (i think that's how you spell it) sword and he was kind of like a idol for me honestly like Aragon for him and what not. Don't get me wrong, Anduril is an awesome name too but always loved the way Narsil sounded it. Great videos by the way, i enjoy your work!
When I was a sysadmin I had to assign hostnames to 3 "blades" (thin servers that share power and cooling): Narsil, Sting, and Glamdring. I didn't use "Andúril" because I wanted the names to be ASCII.
Not as many as I thought there would be. When reading all the books it seems like there are so many more named weapons. Thanks for the list
I'm sure you do additional research and have notes for each individual video you make, but your knowledge and well put together videos never fail to impress me, phenomenal vid as always. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to make such amazing videos for us! Also, great speaking voice.
Loved it!! Would you consider doing a similar video about all the named horses and other mounts from Tolkien’s works? I’d love to know more about Shadowfax and his other equine kin!
I'm calling this video will be amazing just like the other ones you've made.
Turns out I was right, great work as always!
Death Star II no just with robot legs
Fascinating - and nicely researched - piece of Middle-Earth history! It emphasizes, for me, the care, skill, and precision
with which J. R. R. Tolkien built his world in Middle-Earth. If Tolkien had lived perhaps two or three hundred or more years earlier, I have no doubt that he would have been a widely known and revered story-teller, bard, troubador, or similarly renowned wielder of words.
Thank you so much for sharing, it's wonderful to know the name of all great weapons in Tolkien's world and by whom and for whom they were made. I wonder if you could make another video of weaponry such as the axes of the Dwarves and the bow and arrow of the Elves, especially the differences between Mirkwood's bows and arrows and of those of Rivendale and Lothlorien. Thanks.
My young friend, I am never disappointed in your work! Perfect combination of education and art! Lovely!!!
At last I saw a video which satisfied my heart and increased my interest in sword of HOBBIT
Love your videos soooooooooooooooooooooo much. Could you do a top ten strongest lotr characters. I know that’s not your style but I would love to see that. Anyway keep up the fantastic work.
Loved this video Yoystan!!! Honestly all if the named swords of Tolkien's works are my most favorite in the Legendarium and of course Fantasy in general and thanks so much for telling us all of them my most favorite will have to be Gurthang because I have always had a facanation with Swords made with Black Meteorites and I love how at Dagor Dagoroth it is the very sword that will slay Morgoth (it might as well be renamed again to be called "Morgothsbane" do you think that's a nice rename for it? :) ) anyway loved this video and can't wait for the next one!!! :)
Luke Skywalker the 2nd “Morgoth’s Bane” would be a really cool name for Gurthang after the defeat of Melkor!
Men of the West I agree!!!! :)
Luke Skywalker the 2nd Love that nickname.
Or whatever that is in Elvish.
I named my dog Narsil. Partly because we had a family dog growing up and his name was Saber (like the sword) and I wanted another sword name for my dog. Also LOTR...! I love the book and throughly enjoy the movies. Thank you for making these videos, I enjoy learning the in depth history behind this great work.
Great Video! I think its funny that some of the Last Alliance felt the need to restore the Shards of Narsil, and therefore no one cared for Aeglos, which was propably not broken.
This channel made me fall in love with middle earth all over again
Great as always!
Thank my friend very beautiful video and informative as always your videos are so well put together.
Amazing simply lovely what a wonderful video , and thank you for sharing the infinite knowledge of Tolkien . Love your videos to valanor and back ...
I have wondered about "Sting" ever since I first read the books then watched the movies (over and over etc...). Thank you for telling us about the wonderful weapons.
Such comprehensive research! Thanks!
All your videos are great. But these ones, I enjoy even more.
I just love you already for saying every single name correctly (talk about the pronunciation of r and u and other letters)
I love this video! Always a fan of the weapons of Tolkiens works. I would love a weapon or two to put up as a display some day
I used to dork out on this so hard when I was twelve and thirteen. Hard to believe that's been a quarter of a century. So much fun.
I always liked Ringil, because it actually did damage to Morgoth to the point that he limped for the remainder of the First Age. The British author Richard K. Morgan named the lead character of his fantasy epic "Ringil" as well. That series is called "A Land Fit for Heroes", and it's a solid little trilogy if you like your sword and sorcery on the dark and filthy side.
A GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for posting it!
Great video! Enjoyed hearing about some of the “lesser known” weapons again. I would have liked to hear about the two horns mentioned in the LOTR though they are not named. The horn of Boromir and the one given to Merry. These are not weapons Per se but I think could be classed in that way and would be fun to hear about as they are some of my favorite parts in the story.
Two small corrections, I think (please correct me if I’m wrong). I think the short swords of the hobbits were given by Tom B and not found and also that Frodo’s sword was broken by the Witch King at the Fords of Burin. As I say great video and always enjoy what you post. 👍👍
Check out Cedarlore Forge (and previously MAD Dwarf Workshop), you may like his/their work on mythopoetic swords and the likes. David DelaGardelle now has his own forge (Cedarlore) and still makes very nice artwork. He's a major Tolkien fan too!
Great work on all the videos. You should do a video on the Ents and Entwives at some point. I think a discussion on their history and theories on the race's fate would make for a great video! Keep up the good work!
One of the biggest changes when adapting the books into movie form was that Aragorn was given the reforged Narsil, now called Anduril, just before entering the Dwimorberg to rally the dead to his cause by Elrond. This was to symbolize that he, Aragorn, was finally worthy to become the King of Gondor and to marry his daugher Arwen, who had tied her life to that of Aragorn. So Elrond basically wanted to give Aragorn the best chances of succeeding, lest he see his daughter die.
In the books Aragorn is given the reforged Narsil, which he also renamed Anduril, right before the Fellowship leaves Rivendell. In the books Aragorn is much more confident about his role as the restored High King of Gondor, a title he's entitled to through his lineage. In the movies he's far more apprehensive about his future as King, refusing to go to Minas Tirith and feeling that the failures of Isildur are a weakness and a curse upon him.
These videos make my day, keep them coming man, great work👏
Beautiful video! It perfectly captures the magic of Tolkien's works!
A very nice video. I thought there would have been more named weapons in all his work. I was surprised.
I enjoyed this very much.. I have a replica of Andúril made and kept in Brazil.. Thanks for the post...
Truly awesome guys keep it up!
First time I have seen one of your vids. Very good structure. Nice work.
Watched this with great pleasure wondering 'is he going to miss one?' and laughing out loud as all the most obscure weapons I could think of got a mention. This is such a fun site for die-hard fans. Keep up the amazing work. PS Have subscribed.
That was cool. Thanks for posting.
Thanks mate! great as always :D
@1:52 Haha that's my concept art that was used on the LOTR wiki page, good to see it still going!
Thank you for the informative video
Great as usual but one thing. Slaying 5 balrogs during Fall of Gondolin was early draft of Legendarium when they were constructed as minor spirits similar to werewolves the finał version of balrogs as we know it - great fallen maiar were in fact seven in total. Cheers
Stanisław Baratioński I thought about this too. This is correct information! But did Tolkien (or Christopher T.) ever up date the number IN the published printed version of The Silmarillion? Idk/remember, but I'd like to know.
Didn’t feanor fight 7 by himself? Was that all of them in existence?
OH I AM SO READY FOR YOUR VIDEO ABOUT THE MOVIES
Great video joystan!
I would also like to see some videos on the tauredain, half trolls, lossoth or limwaith if you get the time I love your videos and keep up the good work!
Anduril is one of the best fantasy sword designs ever constructed, the history of the blade is nothing less than epic, and that's why I am happy to have one of it's replica hanging on my wall.
Nice...published the day after my 40th birthday.
I love cool artifacts in fantasy. Awesome video :)

Thank you so much for making your videos for us
Super vid... i was looking for this time ago and i thougth it would be good but by you Its total good .. :) ty
Hey Yoystan! I really love your videos and the spiritual and emotional insight that you bring to them, and the light it sheds on the Middle Earth stories.
What about doing the following video: "Is there ANYONE whose will could have been strong enough to destroy the ring in Mount Doom?"
As we know, Frodo and Gollum both failed to willfully destroy the ring and that it happened by a bountiful accident.
I love your video about what if Faramir joined the Fellowship instead of Boromir and I love how it ended!
Would Samwise have been strong enough? Elrond? Aragorn? Arwen? Galadriel? Or perhaps some other legendary character less known in the movies? Also, you could explain whether the Wizards could have done it and whether or not it was even their place/role to do so.
Keep up the great art!
loved it thank you Yoystan
You do awesome job everytime
Glamdring is my personal favourite. It used to be just because it was Gandalf’s sword, but learning more about Turgon and Gondolin in their Silmarillion, I can say that it is definitely my favourite
(Please like if you agree)
Dude, you're my fav channel now!! (Like hands down!!)
Your what if the One ring series... Hands down best What If series on the web!
👐👏👐👏👐👏
Shoutout to the Skyrim axe that snuck it's way in here. (also, great video!)
Hey, first of all I love your videos and I hope you continue making them! Now, as a request I want to ask you if you can make a video about Eol or the history of Gondolin and Nargothrond.
Thank you. I love every video you do.
I love the design of Andúril at the beginning of the video. The pommel with the White Tree engraved on it is even cooler than the movie version.
Sorry, but you forgot about Arwen’s and Elrond’s sword, Hadhafang, that is used by Elrond in the Hobbit movie and in the prologue and by Arwen at the Bruinen river. It’s a sword passed down in the family from Arwen’s mother who it was made for, I think by Celeborn who is her father and approximately a Noldorin or Teleri.
That isn't canon.
I love these videos!
Thank you for this.
Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor was a true badass!
Fighting Morgoth, the Black Enemy of the World, and wounding him, rendering him lame for all time.
Could there be another that savage?
Michael Coulter either Turin or earendil is supposed to slay him in Dagor dagorath
Uh i've been waiting for this one
My sister and her husband are fortunate enough to be in possession of a prop of Glamdring, according to the seller the very sword they bought was used in filming, as in Ian McKellen gripped it's very hilt.
Great video brother! Keep em coming!
I'm in love with the bow legolas gets from galadriel
And thranduils sword
And legolas' daggers!
And like most of the elvish and dwarfish wepons 🤣
Wonderful, thank you and keep it up please!
Back in the day, I named all my skyrin weapons to lotr names.
Wait ? Can u name them ? I didnt know u cud do that lol 😂😂 i did it in oblivion tho lol
You can name the weapons in Skyrim through enchanting. So if you enchant a weapon, shield, or piece of armor. You may name it, and it's pretty cool. :p
It sucks that the Witchkings sword isn't named as far as we (the general populace, at least) know. That's a mighty fine looking blade!
The language of the people of Druadan Forest is related to Sumeran. Ghan-buri-ghan is Sumerian for 'an acre of ground', and can be found among the inscriptions of Sumerian.
Wasn't "Mormegil" Turin's nickname, rather than specifically that of the sword?
Mormegin was a Sindarin word for black sword he did received the title because of his sword Gurthang
What about the spear morgoth used to kill the two trees was it just some random spear? It brought a huge change to the world so it at least deserved a name
I don’t think it was ever named but only referred to as ‘A Black Spear’ at least in the Silmarillion.
Maybe the Elves and Valar refused to speak it's name. lol
The black arrow Bard used is never named either, or the barrow blades, but they are included in this video.
I thought that was the spider Ungoliant.
@@timebomb900 It was both
This is fantastic! I can't believe I'm just finding this channel.
I love enchanted/magical/named weapons. Thanks for the video ^_^
Frodo sword broke at the Fords of Bruinen, at the Witch King's command. Bilbo had the pieces, but neglected to have the sword repaired. So he gave hime Sting instead.
Amazing video as always! Would you do one on Gondolin, please? I guess that to find all of the info consulting different books is necessary, but the White City is such an interesting topic! Thanks for sharing and bringing forth the Light of the West!
Winter Design SECOND THAT!!! GONDOLIN is my favorite fantasy place EVER! Gotham is a close second, only bc I wouldn't want to VISIT Gotham! tehe
Idk if someone pointed it out, but Frodo’s barrow blade is broken by the witch king at the crossing of the river into Rivendell. Not at weathertop.
