Erik Bruhn - The Prince's Solo, Act 1, 'Swan Lake'

  • I first saw this hauntingly beautiful solo danced by Rudolph Nureyev with the Royal Ballet in London in the early 1970s.
There was strong criticism of Nureyev for adding this solo in the mid 1960s to the Royal's very traditional version of this work - until the dancer revealed he had taken it from an early Kirov production.
I was delighted to recently see this performance by Erik Bruhn, the dancers' dancer, and have been wondering, given that Bruhn and Nureyev were great friends at this period, whether the Danish dancer didn't add it to whatever production this is as a tribute to their relaltionship, or because the choreography seemed 'right' to him.
The elegance and refinement with which Bruhn excutes the steps is breath-taking, the musicality delicious, the line gorgeous ... I could go on ... and on here!
It'd be great to hear from anyone knows anything more about this solo.
    Enjoy!

@@JohnRaymondHall in these strange times I find ballet diverts my mind, but only the best of the best.
Among past female dancers Alessandra Ferri has the same effect on me. Though Carla Bruni was a lovely dancer suited to Eric Bruhn.
Dancers have become athletes and they are forcing their bodies to extremes.
Everything about him seems natural, smooth, unforced and noble.
In person I prefered Barishnikov .
      We are spoiled by film.
      My teacher remembered Pavlova..

Thank you so much for presenting this beautifully lyrical and poignantly mysterious performance for us. Incomparably wondrous - watching it often. One can only imagine what more Mr Bruhn was able to evoke when he was at the height of his powers: younger, and in full vigor of health. Rest in peace, Erik🙏

He had all the elegance of a prince. I've always believed that the most important influence of Nureyev was Bruhn, that is the reason why this variación looks so precious with him.

    • @JohnRaymondHall
      @JohnRaymondHall  6 років тому +6

yes, Nureyev in so many contexts spoke of his admiration of and influence from Bruhn. the Dane was before dancers became superstars outside ballet, like Nureyev - like pop stars - and had Bruhn come along at little later he would have been more widely know.

@@JohnRaymondHall I wonder when there will be a Bruhn-Nureyev movie to retell the influence (in art and in life) of them to each other. Both to the interest of dancing professionals and general audiences.

Not easy at all this choreography (those slow pirouettes into ronde de jambe...), but so beautifully executed by Mr. Bruhn! Bravo 👏

Best footage to illustrate his beautiful body that I have seen. He may have lost a little weight around this time as had an ulcer but this only enhances the elegant line of his unsurpassed artistry on an already perfect anatomy. Aesthetically breathtaking.

I feel Prince Siegfried's languor and the weight of expectation in this famous introspective solo, performed so elegantly, with noble restraint and exquisite line by Erik Bruhn. He really was a great dancer and a forerunner to the dynamo that was coming. Thank you so much for sharing.

Wonderful ! In terms of the music and of the unfolding drama, it makes sense to link the vibrancy of Act One to the sadness of Act Two. The set of this production production is also wonderful : nice to see that this prince lives in a beautiful castle with an elegant courtyard. Do you have any more clips of this production ?

hi Jane. the solo here was just for the Bell Telephone Hour so sadly this is all there is. i love the solo for exactly the reasons you do - it is the perfect set up and link to the next part of the ballet.

yes Peter, a full film was made and telecast both in Canada and the US (and there may be copies from those telecasts) and there is a video cassette in the NYPL. i'll ask about to see if a copy exists in the public domain somewhere. i'll tell you if i find something.

Beautifully executed no doubt, but to me it's too bouncy - it doesn't convey the same sense of emotional weight and melancholy as Nureyev's slightly slower version which would take a tear from a stone.
