Beginners Guide to Runs and Fills on the Piano

- In today’s lesson, I am going to show you the beginner's guide to runs and fills on the piano. A run aka fill is basically a pattern of notes you can use to fill in empty space in music to make it sound fancy. Knowledge of basic music theory such as key signatures, scales, chords and arpeggios really come in handy when doing runs. I actually recommend learning improvisation on the piano, since that will give you a better understanding on what sounds good and what doesn’t. Over time, you will figure out patterns that you can re-use and modify.

Thank you so much for explaining runs and fills in a simple key. Every video I have seen so far has been in some crazy key with a bunch of sharps or flats. Although I am able to play in other keys, when learning a new technique I can understand it better in a key of C, F or G. Once I understand it better I can apply it to more complicated keys.
So clearly and transparently taught! the BEST tutorial
At last. I have been to at least 50 other UA-cam channels looking for this explanation. Thank you.
Great video- Thanks! Want to mention that sometimes arpeggios can be played more easily, as far as the fingering is concerned, in 1st inversion, especially when adding the 6th note. Also, in your Silent Night example, the arpeggio would then start on a B, which sounds good because it is the same pitch on the word “night”!
Just what I need! Love your simplistic way of teaching!
Exactly!
Thanks so much! I love this technique of using fills. I have been watching a few other videos on HOW to do this. Yours is the first I have seen that explains WHEN to do this. I really needed that explained. Thanks again. 🤣
It's very clearly explained 👏
