This is just spectacular . It was so good watching part 1 and part 2 right after each other . I got to learn alot of new things from this video but i wanted to ask a question... My monkie kid oc is a successor of an also great deity tiger thingy who i just made up , something like mei and her dragon ancestory ( looking back to it idk if making up fan deities is respectful to the Chinese mythology but anyway) is it okay if that deity like creature was related to the white tiger , like are they allowed to have children? Or something like that as if so the potential anxiety i can add to my oc is up there !!( Idk much about the depth of their mythology and i always get it wrong when i try to search it up ) It's understandable if you couldn't answer

I wanted to do some research regarding your question before I answered. ((LONG answer ahead--)) Whether or not it is disrespectful to make up fan deities, is a question I have asked myself many times actually..! And well, it depends on how you do it I suppose. Now that it was brought up again, I looked a bit around online, trying to see what other people thought of the subject. And I agree with a lot of what I found. It depends a lot on whether you are making entirely original fictional deities, direct versions/inspirations of already known deities/gods, or yeah, making up your own original deity/character in/from an already known mythology/religion. In a lot of cases, it's okay as long as it is respectful to the mythology/deity you are basing it/taking it from. What I mean, could be: Representing them in the right way, and not for example make them do things they clearly wouldn't. But I guess that only applies if you're making a direct (version) of a known deity. If you are making your own character, I would say it's more about the general mythology/religion. Meaning that if you wanted to be completely sure you don't offend something/someone, you would need to do some research on the topic. But besides, it's not like all people will get offended because you make a wrong interpretation of their religion/beliefs. (Okay, that likely greatly depends on what kind of misinterpretation, but you know-) But of course, I can't guarantee that none will, some could very well be offended as well - I imagine it could be for many different reasons. (personal and not) But enough of that! Let's look at the Four Symbols from Chinese mythology you asked about! I understand that you couldn't find any answers just by googling it. But I did manage to find SOME things, I hope could be interesting to you! Like if they could have kids? So short answer: I don't think so. The Four Symbols are as far as I've read, depicted as Divine Creatures or Celestial Beings, and rather than having offspring or children, the focus is more on their individual attributes and roles rather than on familial relationships or children/offspring. They are the embodiment of the essence of their respective season. But I gotta say, I am not sure😅 I couldn't find any CLEAR answer. Only something like what I just wrote. Maybe they can have some KIND of offspring? And if so, whether they would need to do it with one of the other three Symbols or they would be able do it with anybody, then also becomes a relevant question🤔 If you don't wanna get too much into that, and risk offending something or someone, or getting it wrong, you might just want to make those Tiger ancestors of your OC not directly related to The White Tiger of the West. But maybe they could have some sort of different connection! Just an Idea, my point being, that yes - You can do it, of course. But you DO risk offending someone or some of the histories (I guess that requires more research yet again to avoid) But if you focus on writing a good story while being respectful to the mythology it's definitely still a possibility if you ask me. If you are unsure about making up your own deities as well, I would recommend finding one that already exists in Chinese Mythology (one that fits what you want) and base your OC on it, as a descendant of that character! In Journey to the West, (the thing LMK is based on) there are SO many different demons and gods alike, (and plenty of half-animal/human or intelligent creatures and animals as well!) where I'm sure you would be able to figure out whether or not they can have children. I have seen others do this in Aus/fan-comics/fics as well! Where they make their OC a descendant of an actual character from the Journey to the West. So yeah! I hope any of this could be of any help if only just a little✨!!
