I've always felt that the Orthodox church "understands" people and this way of mosaic making expresses that wonderfully: it's built with the viewer's experience as its goal. I don't find this so strongly anywhere. I wish there was an Orthodox church near me. I don't, so I started attending a Catholic church as the closest alternative. I absolutely love Orthodox mosaics, especially the old Byzantine ones. They speak to me, even after 1,500 years.
