  • Some dancers feel that the soloist rank is the hardest level of their career. Waiting for seniority to claim certain roles means much less dancing than before-causing focus and confidence to slip.

    Even if you spend your whole life as Corps, it's still way more than what most dancers will ever achieve, it's the NYCB afterall, such a dream....

    • @nalabees
      @nalabees 5 років тому +20

      Agreed. It's sad how some principals like Teresa look down on the corps position as dancers who haven't been promoted, rather than a great achievement on it's own, and a well respected and necessary part of the team. Not everyone can be principals, and that does not mean they failed at ballet. Nor is it even a good fit for every dancer. Some dancers may choose to accept that fact and spend their time enjoying their position and may not be determined to be promoted. That does not make them any less driven or hard working. I suppose in a field where competition is driven into you and you're always against the dancers next to you for the role its easy to believe that corps should only be a temporary position, not your ultimate goal.

      It is but they're athletes like any other and all athletes want to be the best. There's nothing wrong with the corps and it's a great honor but it's like being an Olympian and always being just off the podium. You're there and achieving your dream but you want to move up.

      Nycb dancers are very lucky, because the artistic directors take a lot of liberties to our corps dancers in solo roles. Even in the digital season I would look at the credits for the ballet and was like, “wow, look at these corps dancers in this ten-person ballet!” I think the reason some might get salty about not being promoted is because at nycb working in the corps is GRUELING. A principal of soloist might get to go home at 4pm to rest but those Corps girls are in three ballets a night for their duration of their performances. then again, I still don’t understand the need to be the best at doing what I love to to continue to enjoy it (reighlen)

    I look at the Corps De Ballet and what they do and I think (hypothetically) I'd almost prefer to do that than have a Soloist or Principal position in a company. Imagine dressing up and dancing with your friends every night! Obviously the status is different, but what a total joy to be able to share something and put so much collective hard work in to create something beautiful

    • @nalabees
      @nalabees 5 років тому +11

      It seems to be beaten into them that soloists is a waiting period before principal, and if that doesn't happen (Teresa, the most unhappy looking, is still a soloist 6 years later) they are failing. Maybe they should still use soloists in the corps for some dances, if that soloist is not in any performances wouldn't that be better than nothing? It's tough bc they all seem to look down at the corps role so I guess they would see that as insulting but quite frankly if you're not dancing, that seems like a bigger blow.

    I watch a lot of the Royal Ballet rehearsals, which I love, and have just started watching this series. It strikes me that the whole atmosphere at NYCB is far more charged with competitiveness. Perhaps it's because they mostly do Balanchine--who I revere--whereas the RB and SF Ballet bring in guest choreographers, who are free to choose soloists or even corps members to dance principal roles. At NYCB there seems less chance of this happening. Are Ratmansky and Justin Peck free to choose whoever they want to dance principal roles in their new works?

      ***** it makes them last longer, also helps slightly with balance too, also in smaller companies they can't afford new pointe shoes everyday

    • @nalabees
      @nalabees 5 років тому +4

      @@beckybleaden I've noticed that the rate that NYCB dancers go through shoes is much higher than a lot of other companies, and hardly ever see darned shoes. I guess if you can use as many as you need for classes and always have new shoes for every single performance and rehearsal you start caring less about their longevity and don't want to invest that much time modifying each pair if they're going into the bin at the end of the day.
      it's interesting to watch dancers from different companies routines with new shoes, those who "destroy" them as soon as they get them with the knowledge they will only last that performance and those that modify them in a way that attempts to get the most time from that shoe.

    • @alinaj1707
      @alinaj1707 6 років тому +8

      Lorena Chagas Principal dancer is the top, top rank. You only dance solo parts and will frequently perform lead roles in the ballets (like Odette and Odile in Swan Lake, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and others). Soloist is the rank below principal. You dance solo parts, but sometimes you still might dance in the corps. You maybe will get a lead role a couple times, but generally you just dance solo parts that aren't lead roles (like the fairies in Sleeping Beauty, pas de trios in Swan Lake, and more).

      This was a series based on the New York City Ballet. They are asking each dancer there experience growing up in ballet and their time within the company. Of course, they are taking about themselves. They were being interviewed and these clips were edited into “episodes”. If any either of us did a series as this asking about our personal lives, we could also be perceived as narcissistic when we most likely aren’t.
      This series is 4 years old, but gave us an opportunity to peak into the window of these dancers lives up until that point.

    I don't know the girl's name, but she's a soloist, and I feel kind of worried about her because she's so thin :/ If you ever look at these comments--Girl, I don't know you, that may just be your body type, and I know you work out a lot, but please be careful. I know you put a lot of pressure on yourself to achieve these things and that's important to you, but don't be so hard on yourself that you restrict yourself in eating or punish yourself by restricting your eating--it won't make things better, and it's not worth it. Be kind to yourself. I don't even know if that's your situation, but if it is or was, please reconsider and like I said, be kind to yourself. I care about you, and God loves you--and to anyone else in the same situation, I would say the same. Being skinny or reaching a certain fitness or career goal is NOT worth destroying yourself over. Think about it?
