The truth about cheap imported pinot grigio like Mezzacorona is that they are mediocre and just passable quality at best. Let me explain: the guy who brought Santa Margherita to the U.S. in the 80s, Tony Terlato, said he wanted to introduce America to a quality Italian wine. After it caught on all the other mass market producers brought theirs in too. And if you taste them you will see what he means. They are dry, acidic and flavorless to the point where many people use them just as a base for sangria or to make a wine cooler. I tried Ecco Domani, Delatorri, Da Vinci, Cavit, Chloe, Barefoot, Mezza Corona, and a few others I got at Total Wine. Most of them just taste like salad vinegar. However the one I found to be the most fruit forward is Bela Sera. There is a noticable difference in that one and I would serve it to guests because at least it has some sweetness. There are supposed to be a handful of small producers in the Alto Adige highlands that make the best quality pinot grigio, and you have to seek them out. The staff person at Total Wine told me stick with domestic pinot grigio if I want a fruity wine and I was told the same at Wine.com
