I my opinion... this is one of the great bass lines in all of rock and pop. Maybe the greatest. And the groove during that sax solo... holy smokes... if I were in that room I would be weeping with happiness.
Duran Duran are far better musicians than they get credited for. John Teylor is an awesome player, but because he's so bloody handsome that got glossed over by 'serious' music papers at the time.
I have always thought exactly the same. Yes, there are so many sublime, powerful, beautiful bass lines in pop/rock history. But, IMHO, none gets closer to this one.
Roger Taylor does not get enough credit for this hard driving beat and the hi hat work on this track...very physically demanding drum work on this song.
Just reintroduced to this song after 20 odd years. People picking out the bass(fucking insane) and the drums(also insane) the thing that struck me was how tight the whole band are live. Utterly brilliant live version of a brilliant song. Everything here is quality
A lot of new wave bands fake their way through it but Duran Duran always played their actual instruments and as a hard rocker/musician for decades I must say they played them extremely well. Bass line off the charts,,Getty Lee style. These guys were the real deal and still are in all the way up to 2024 since the 80s.. check out the drummer just killing it on the hi-hat and snare😂
Actually, they have a sequenced keyboard part. Like it or not, that does function as a “backing track”. But yeah, they (like The Who) are performing live over that.
One in particular after the solo…I do admire singers who just keep going, knowing they are getting screwed by the mic cutting out and not knowing when it’s coming back.
Love Simon how he just kept going with his powerful vocals even as the sound failed temporarily. It reminds me of me when I've sung on stage, and people remarked, "She doesn't even need a mic!" That made me so proud of myself. I miss my choral and musical theatre days...
That must've been an awesome way to ring in the New Year. Saw some amazing shows at the Palladium....U2...Blues Brothers...and a few more I can't remember :(. Good times, sad it's gone.
I'm amazed at how JT chose an Aria Pro Superbass above all others! At the time,it was one of the cheapest basses!Sounds incredible though.Kool&the gang also used one, Robert"Kool"Bell.
Although I thought of them as a bit of ''Boy Band'' back in the day I forgot just how good they were. Not a weak link in the line up at all. Love the JT bass runs.
It was unfortunate this band was stereotyped as POP because although they have catchy tight tunes most of their music is simply seriously outstanding and NO it's not pop.
@@patriciamays8873 I agree! Their songs were often abstract & complex with lyrical depth. Unfortunately their teen audience made it so they weren’t taken totally seriously 😢
They were all so good looking that they weren't taken seriously musically back then, just thought of as poppy, and fun, when in fact, they are some of the most talented musicians in music..ever. Even now in their 60's they're exactly as they were here musically, tight and perfect. Mesmerizing band!
Everybody loved Hungry Like The Wolf, but Rio was my jam! Sax solo (I played the sax in high school) and perhaps one of the greatest bass licks in 80s music! ❤️
REally goes to show you, you still had to really know what you were doing to make it back in the day. They rhythm section in this song really shines and they were doing it all live. I liked them as a kid but as I grew up thought they were fluffy and stuff, but they could really play.
I guess ppl can t or don't listen to the drums...Because they cannot understand the level of difficulty to bash the drum s that way for 6 min, and not lose rhythm.amazing Roger Taylor
No lip syncing here. Great job, great rendition, especially considering the mic problems. 3:55 I tell you something, I know that you're drinking! 3:55 I tell you something, I know that you're drinking!
The bass is the soul of this song
Love this version just because of johns work on bass!!
JT is such an underrated player
I always get reminded of Rush's "Marathon" when I hear the song Rio's prominent bassline and the relatively sparse guitar.
@@Torgo1969 Same here and I picture the video from A Show of Hands.

It’s an easy bass line.., even I can do it 😂

Love that Nick is having a spot of tea during the sax solo. 🇬🇧
indeed ☕

I told my husband...learn the base line and play it for me. Absolute KILLER base line!!
I love how John stops playing to make sure Simon was heard until his mike was back on. ❤️
The Taylors were the heart of Duran Duran:
Bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor, and guitarist Andy Taylor and Simon the Soul of the Band.
And what is Nick then?
@@Aldorlea The spine; that keeps the whole thing together.
@@kilmone Yes!
Check out power station both John Taylor & Andy Taylor in the band with singer Robert Palmer very awesomeness bass guitar playing & guitar playing
interestingly, none of the Taylors are related. (Extremely common last name in England.)
Gawd this song in studio has so many layers to pull it live. Yet they shone infront of the audience!! What a performance!!
Best live version of this song I absolutely love it
I am impressioned with the drummer, he did a great job, wonderful just like the studio!!!
Grande John Taylor.
Best pop band in history imho. All the members of the band are great musicians.
Lots of technical difficulties, but at least you know they are a real band playing real music without backing track.
Technical difficulties? 😅 This was '82 and done very tasteful for a live feed.

@@Gk2003myeah that sequenced keyboard part would be almost impossible to play live except for a speed demon virtuoso. We’ll give them a pass on that😊
I dont know if anyone has mentioned it but this bassist and bassline is amazing!!!
brilliant. ... bloody brilliant. .. All of the boys (then) absolutely fab ...was lucky enough to see them live then
Bel Mac wish back in the 80s I could of seen them live.😍😲
Andy and Roger were so critical to DD success.

Not a bad looking one in the lot - they're all gorgeous!
It was a PRIVILEGE to be 20 at that moment. We Generation Jones did have the coolest music.
1982 and 1983, two of the best years ever for pop music.
Go-Gos, Madonna, Culture Club, The Cure, …..
John Taylor's bass is brilliant, Rio is DDs best song
Duran Duran, the smiths, the cure. Have the great bass line song 😍
🎉❤❤ I like to thank you all of you for the prayers my arm is going to be healed to the Lord's be the glory 🙏🙏🙏
I'm obsessed with their basslines
One of the best basslines in music, arguably, EVER!
One of the bands of the eighties
Huh?
that was incredible. hate them all you want, they are an incredible live band
WTF Roger is a machine.
I think they played to clicks a lot for sequencing parts but yeah he’s killer.
The bass is the heart and soul of this song. Just makes you dance. I don’t know why they don’t feature the bass player more.
He really had pipes
Legends of the 80s!!
What a phenomenal band.
John Taylor. Wow.
John Taylor’s groove makes me wanna dance so badlyyy
They are kick ass musicians.

John Taylor is one of the best bassists in the world. Entwistle would approve this message.
I, personally, wouldn't go so far as rating him the best, but on this song, he slays it! Excellent bass work here! 👍
Bass player from Kajagoogo is even better.
I rock this at least once a week on the way to work. Was 3 when it came out and still love it lol always will
I blasted this on the car radio back then enroute to work. Some things never change.
Wonderful performance, the best live ! 1982 great music year!
Someone get that drummer a beer!
i live for this bass line
The guy in the background just dancing having a good time lol. Goals .
Fookin incredible performance. Everyone. But yeah ... Taylor's bass outshines everything in a luminous epic energetic perfection.
