Agreed. HBL is not learning, it is discharging of liabilities and meeting education schedule for a year end KPI. Are school fees reduced due to the power consumption, laptops, space at home, classroom furniture, printer ink, WiFi etc. The media portrays a well set up HBL environment. Thank you sleazy KTV and rich men for playing a role in COVID virus spread.
As a tutor which uses HBL on laptops, I must say this method does not work for every kid. The said student must be disciplined and independent enough to carry out on their own. Some kids blatantly use their mobile phones, space out or tune out or simply could not focus on the lessons. These are some kids who need a human presence. The school's HBL is also not standardised. In the same school, I've heard different teachers may carry out their lessons differently. One student even confessed to me that lessons become slower because there is a limit to what can be taught online. I don't even want to go on and talk about the homework bit.
as a University Student I hate online classes, the lecturers teach a class of 80-120 student, there is no way to ask questions, and even if you are able to ask questions, its difficult to ask follow up questions since by the time you type out the question the lecturer has gone to a different topic or even question.
read the book boy... half the time... you had to know about the subject before go to class... University is not the same as school.. they don't hand deliver thing for you... since it now more like fight to the death...
@@campkira About 70% of classes throughout my uni experience do not use the book but require it be purchased. I think if they interviewed JC students, the parent will find that its vastly different due to the fact that lessons are split into lectures and tutorials, and students tend to be more disciplined

i dont understand why people are always so worried about psle bc its not the only national exam that is still going to happen. plus it's not that crucial either & it's merely just the first stepping stone every singaporean kid will have to take. there are also olevels and alevels too which i feel is much more crucial
Here in the U.S. my 10 year old son learns on a similar platform. The difference appears to be that he is required to have daily zoom meetings with teachers to be counted for attendance. He meets 4 times a day with these teachers , so there is plenty of face time and teacher student interaction. The only drawback is the teachers only meet for 30 minutes each which I feel is not enough.
Nice one. Noticed the disciplined and those who thrive on tech online, do well. As parent, my sec2 thrived with HBL(he's usually too distracted in school to be productive). Teachers were surprised and giving positive feedback as they couldnt get that level of productivity out of him in school. While on the other end, educating via HBL, has worked quite well, been pretty productive but the lesson planning much more tedious in order to keep students hooked to your class. There are merits with HBL. But of course curriculum needs to be balanced with contact in person...one size never fits all. So from June, my sec2 will be distracted again when school reopens.. sigh.
HBL works well for poly imo. I feel its better for older students and not the younger batch of students, the amount of discipline you need during hbl is huge
About the sandbox thingy. Yes indeed. But it's not foolproof as well. You as a parent might secure your own PC but other childrens' parents might not do so or don't know how to do it. So hackers can go thru the ones that are not secured to hack into the platform. Theres no way to stop hackers if they are bent on hacking websites.
My kids have been at it for several weeks now and they enjoy it. The only stumbling block has been the teachers who have had a hard time adjusting to teaching online and using the new technology. I don't have discipline problems, they love through the assignments quickly and have time to explore more deeply the things that they really enjoy. The lessons are on video so they can go back and review if they don't understand. They can message teachers if they need more clarity. I act more as a manager, making sure things are turned in and complete. This works well for us.

PSLE determines your secondary school and there are three streams still if I am not wrong. Either u finish 5 years of secondary school or you finish secondary school in 4 years and go to poly or JC or ITE. Technically if u flunk psle, u may need one extra year in sec or probably 2 extra years in ITE. That is why most parents worry. HBL is a mess that MOE has no clue how to run properly. No standardising, no guidelines. Up to each school and the teachers to do as they like. My son’s primary school only had live lessons on the last week. A shambolic nonsense as far as I’m concerned
@@Notchmods Before the lockdown, my son's school did one single day "training" for HBL. All his teachers had issues mostly fighting with the setup and other organisational problems. In the following they did not do any online lesson anymore, only super-extended regular homework. After some time, some of them re-startet trying with online video lesson. Unfortunately the next day the security problems the with Zoom app occurred. Full screeching halt again. I always said don't use all this seemingly free US apps. In this case, the owner is a Chinese and the servers are located in China. But that's another problem. Anyway, there are free and better alternatives for video lessons. From that day my son had every day 6 - 8 hours extended homework, on some days he sat for 12 h. I complained to the teachers and got the reply, that the kids in the emergency class do the same in 4 h. Straight out: Impossible. If the homework is done in a proper manner, and not smear down the compo anyhow on a paper, an don't care to get the facts in your science right, then 4 h is outright impossible. I sat with him every single day, every hour, I know exactly what I am saying. 5 days before "extended homework HBL" officially ended, the teachers practically ended "lessons" already. I wrote another email, asking if over the "holiday" they could at least once a week have an online session, with the purpose to get the class having a bit time together and keep them a bit connected, bonded. Nothing. Did not even receive a reply. Initially I thought: No, that can not be the standard in Singapore, it is our school only. All parents I talked to said similar. And by the way, I was also shocked how many of the materials such as the papers and SLS contained mistakes. May be I am too much used to the government in Singapore usually organising all things to near perfection. This time I am only left to say: FAIL. Not pass.
@@krollpeter literally no person uses zoom they could have used platforms kids use like discord or teach kids how to use useful apps like Microsoft teams
@@ryanseow472 Ryan, how do you come to the idea that nobody is using zoom? Everybody is using it, including the Singapore government. Mindblowing, isn't it? A server in China, and only encrypted until it arrives at the server. I was speechless when I heard that. Zoom is not my choice at all. But if the school ask to use Zoom, will you lock your child out from it? Or Google docs? Or other things that are data suckers? So why do you explain that to me? I would use Jitsi, as an example. (also not suitable for government work)
@@krollpeter sorry I meant no one used zoom before the virus outbreak so it was illogical that suddenly so many schools began using it despite there being many better communication apps with more features and uses than zoom. personally, I am quite young not that close to relating to being a parent so I am not that impressed by encrypted voice files, images, and text files being sent to servers actually Whatsapp is pretty much that without the conferencing feature. To me, the zoom was only used because many teachers are not good with technology, zoom tends to be simpler to use but I feel that is bad as in a technology-driven age the fact zoom was suddenly used in many schools proves that tech literacy is still not that important in Singapore and not that good in general
There is no level field when it comes to HBL (online learning) - the disadvantaged becomes more apparently disadvantaged. The rich have better resources, a maid to feed the children when doing HBL, educated parents/adults who could afford the time and competency to assist in their work and the list goes on. The poor, rather than having the resources to support their children, had to be content with only making ends meet and are likely, habouring the fear of a job lost for the breadwinner in the family. Even with the govt doing their utmost to provide for the disadvantaged, the effects of the pandemic has certainly revealed who becomes further marginalised in this harsh reality.
No discipline... hbl only works if that person not easily distracted and dont have self discipline. If your child dont want to learn properly, then it means you didnt educate your child and didnt raised them well to be well mannered and independent. So do appreciate teachers efforrs🙃
Not necessarily. Some kids learn differently. Some kids have learning disabilities such as dyslexia or ADHD. That is not the parents fault and it doesn't mean that the child is " undisciplined" or " unfocused",it just means that they may need a different approach.
@@commercialgirl24 sorry but i made my points based on the video. None of these kids classified of having learning difficulties. It just the parents going too soft on their kids do what they want rather than just being a bit strict to their timetable. Thats why i said no discipline.
@@sisubalanselvan2619 I see your point, but you didnt say 'these kids" or the " kids in the video" ect. So I thought you were making a generalization. My apologies. By the way, even kids with no learning disabilities may need a different approach to learning.

@@campkira reality is, if you can not verbalise what is not good, then you can not improve. Critic must be fair and founded. But if there is no critique and true evaluation? The questionnaire my son got from his school contained only positive answer choices. Everything good, learned a lot, all parents happy happy, school has done excellent, etc. etc. Do the earth a favour and do not waste the electrical power to operate a server for posting such questionnaires.
No offence to you but you can’t say it was executed poorly by government it is the school it self me and my brother both in secondary school had much more work and were up till 8 or 7 pm doing work normal to be honest and I feel that of your child is in primary school then yes they will have way much lesser homework
@@thiskeithlee The government had been talking about a online learning system after SARS but then nothing happened. Now everything was kind of rushed out in days. And then, the teachers passed the burden to the parents. The school where my son is gave an unbelievable amount of homework, so much that he sat many days fro 12 h. I sat together with him, a 10 year old can not teach himself effectively. And even we did so, we still got reminders by teacher "you did not hand in this or that". I wrote to the form teacher and she said the other kids can complete the homework in 4 h. I mean I sat with him, and I can know what is possible and what not. If you think that I am talking nonsense so be it, can't help.
Peter Kroll and we have made a system for it everything needs improvement overtime what is student learning space what is asknlearn also a sandbox is not really realistic for education they won’t be able to put the video calling apps and I am a student I know what is stress and also if your child is taking 12 bit others 4 then maybe there really is a problem also a student would spent would spent 6 to 7 hours in school lesson Time 12 hours minus 7 5 hours that Is used to do that days homework and revision
Nope.. Not gonna happen.. Not even gonna try.. Kids at my house are currently having the time of their lives.. And that's how it should be.. We're all treating this as a long holiday for them.. Totally ZERO school works.. Their parents (my elder sister and brother) are currently all in their kid's classroom's whatsapp group.. Teacher's are sending home work everyday and even sending youtube link for online classes.. Ignoring all of them as we speak... But we are training them on helping their parents and grandparents with simple daily chores at home.. What better time to let them feel how it's like to be an adult for a change.. In that case, when school reopens, they will learn how to appreciate what grown ups do for them everyday during their absence (in school).. This is the best time for life lessons 101..

Even with the govt doing their utmost to provide for the disadvantaged, the effects of the pandemic has certainly revealed who becomes further marginalised in this harsh reality.
who else watches youtube & netflix when their parents go away
How much laptops do you haveeeeee I have a broken phone that I use for online classes :(
My professor is a complete boomer on the computer. Had to drop her class.
Are you American? #Justasking
@@TAILSORANGEs Yes. I'm happy to hear next semester that there will be a replacement. She was god awful. She was bad enough in lecture.
@@PimpMatt0 Ah.

@@TAILSORANGEs Yes. Santa Clara. Fall is going to be online as well.
Lol waking up at 6 am? I wake up at like 5.20 am... sleep at 11pm
Easy! Minimise your tab and go to chrome and watch UA-cam all the way!
OR
Use your virtual background to pretend that you are paying attention!
what is the purpose of this coverage? to make everyone stress out?
CB period can go other ppl house ??? Anyway, you should interview those who are working from home and have preschoolers, it’s even more chaotic
that's why we respect teachers job#hbl
Why is she wearing shoes in the house ?
Not goona lie I love Hbl I learnt more compare to face to face
Where's the holy cane?
wow
exaggerate, mind your own children
It was basically super-extended homework.
I am very disappointed. That was not prepared well, and executed poorly.
I know you want to hear only happy comments. Sorry, no.
na... people just being kissass so their comment can be up the top.... the face is without teacher who had experince in subject... it like teaching kid with a robot... they not going to get it right away...
HAHAHAHA the boy v cute
I just realised mica is from my school hehe
