One of my top 5 songs of all time. I have memories of study organic chemistry with this playing constantly day and night. Becoming a physician was important then. Now learning to play this is PARAMOUNT!!!!!
Hello friends, I need to get ready for my flight, so I won't have time to finish up on section 2 and 3. Check back next week for the completed series! Thanks for your patience. -Rob
+swiftlessons there is a nice place to eat right near the store you're teaching at...and i saw some good Jazz at Club Deluxe across the street. They're food was good too
Your lessons are fantastic. Never did I think I'd play this song. After much much much much pickin my fingers are finally remembering where to go. Thank You
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! I've been trying to nail that verse for ages but no matter how hard I tried, I could not arpeggiate that high D while maintaining that bass pattern UNTIL I FOUND YOU! You explained it so easily and I took off. SO HAPPY NOW. Big thumbs up!!!!
one of the most beautiful songs ever. this is gonna be one of my most challenging finger pick songs ever. i never thought id get Dust in the wind down but i did it. this one seems harder but i have to learn this!
Always wanted to learn this song. Thank you so much, nobody else teaches this the way that you do, you have a very accurate, easy to follow teaching style and it's very helpful when learning songs
Wow what a great teacher. Love how you break everything up in small note bunches . The only suggestion I would make is wear dark clothing so it’s easier for us old guys to read the tabs easier.. I’m a total noob but taking a couple of bars a day and concentrating on them and I am learning this song that I thought I had no chance of ever learning.
I've been looking for a clear precise demo of the first verse picking pattern but couldn't really find it,but this had helped massively, I've heard loads say it's the exact same picking pattern, only that ain't true here, you need to hit the extra G string to get the desired sound,so this gets a new subscriber, thanks my friend 👍✌️
A lot of Neil Young songs are in double drop-D. Also, Black Water by the Doobie Bros., Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac, Everlong by the Foo Fighters and Ohio by CSNY (also written by Neil Young). Those are the ones I've learned, anyway.
Wow, great lesson! Nice work! I also enjoyed your lesson on beginner music theory. You have the talent of making things very clear. I'd like to request a video on the use of modes.
+Free Ray Hey thanks, glad your digging the cut! Thanks, I'm definitely stoked to complete this series, but I need to re-shoot a few spots. I'll have all done once I return to Philly. In the meantime, I'll stay busy, posting other lessons from my hotel. Talk soon. -Rob
Best lesson I’ve seen on UA-cam the tabs were super helpful with the explanations thanks for that!! The plethora of ads was annoying though maybe a couple less would have been great
+kerry mcmanus Thanks so much for checking it out. Toughest song I've done yet, but I look forward to practicing the vocal line and trying to get my range opened up. Two more additions are on the way, once I get back from San Fran. Until then, Be well Kerry. -Rob
Ah, that's my Dads 1973 Guild D40, and it's incredible! They're still making them, though I'm not sure about the quality now that Cordoba bought the company: amzn.to/2HUZHku
Awesome lesson and good singing, Mr. Rob. Awaiting pt 2 & 3! I bet this would sound optimal with fresh strings. IMHO your low E string sounded a tad dull for this song, or maybe Jimmy used finger picks.
+97yawnac Haha, your absolutely right, a fresh set of strings would go a long way... I'm anxiously awaiting my next shipment from Ernie Ball. Good ear and thank for the comment, glad you are enjoying this lesson thus far.
That arrangement is fantastic ! I know one very similar (same intro) and I love playing it. And that double D tuning sounds so deep and melodic at the same time. Enjoy your trip to SF ! Clem. Btw, when do you come to Europe and London so I can book a private lesson ?
Here is A Day In The Life lesson: ua-cam.com/video/h0TBbkWnsqA/v-deo.html. And ua-cam.com/video/zBFJE_X0qTo/v-deo.html I’d rather see songs that have been covered. Swift is a greater player and teacher, so he can tackle more difficult material. He is one of the best!
Fkfkfn Nnrkk There is no point for him to cover songs that have been covers by other channels. It makes more sense to have him cover songs that haven’t been done. How many Honky Tonk Women lessons do we need?
+swiftlessons you should start posting videos of you covering songs like you do in the beginning of the lesson but the whole video would be you just playing that song and singing ect. Just an idea :)
What is the reason for the "A" string to remain "A?" Since the "A" string is never or hardly used, I suggest it be tuned to low "G". After listening, I think the guitar is tuned to open G. Please explain?
what would be the reason for changing the tuning on a string that is never played? wouldnt that be the same as tuning a guitar that nobody was ever gonna play?
For my arrangement it doesn't really matter, because as you said. I'm not really using it. But, you should do what works for you, especially if you're trying to add a little more depth and bass to your performance, that low G note might sound amazing!
+Maxumum99 I'm secure enough to accept another mans compliment, thank you in the most masculine fashion possible haha! Singing this tune is such a tough task with the complicated patterns, but I'm getting there! I wish I could practice everything a few month before posting, but I gotta get these lessons out there! I really appreciate your encouraging words on the singing front, it helps alot moving forward. Thanks for checking in! -Rob
swiftlessons Anytime Brother! 👍🏼 And Im pretty sure we all understand the part about learning it and then wanting to immediately post it lol I do the same thing, one time I was so exited when I learned Hotel California from you I went to show it immediately to my brothers and It didn't sound to great lol but now Ive got it down :) Thanks again for your Great Tutorials
Eddie Galon hey i know this comment is old but if youre still struggling on fingerpicking, start small. Blackbird is a good example. You do the same picking pattern the whole song, the “chords” are very easy as well. Then learn something more complicated like dear prudence, or babe im gonna leave you. If youre able to play those songs you can definitely play going to california.
Hey Andrew, thanks for asking. I've posted tabs for this, and all my other recent lessons at Patreon.com/Swiftlessons. It's just a dollar a month for the service, and members can expect all kinds of helpful resources; Tabs, chord sheets, study guides, jam tracks, books, and much more.

Rob, what if i can't use 4 fingers, can it be done with 2 or maybe 3 ?
One of my top 5 songs of all time. I have memories of study organic chemistry with this playing constantly day and night. Becoming a physician was important then. Now learning to play this is PARAMOUNT!!!!!

Is this in double drop D tuning?
It would help if you said what fingers you use for picking too
clint4Now you can’t really explain that
Can I still book this private lesson? Or am I too late?
Cool man

Good Day SirCan you lay out that type of tab for Don McLean Castles in the air for me please.or at least just the beginning or intro section?
belle interprétation et surtout pas facile à chanter :-)
dont you play the open g on the verse rather than open d?
What is the reason for the "A" string to remain "A?"
Since the "A" string is never or hardly used, I suggest it be tuned to low "G".
After listening, I think the guitar is tuned to open G.

I've also forgotten more than I can play!
