James, My mother's last day was 10 days ago and I've been sad since. I just walked my dogs on snowy and cold Colorado evening with your video playing in my coat pocket. As you were plucking your way through Going to California, I remembered times with my mother and my youth trying to learn Page riffs on my dad's acoustic. As we returned home, the snow began to fall, your video restarted, your voice and notes helped me realize just how wonderful and peaceful my life is. Thank you, James. Craig
I was supposed to pick up my Mom from the hospital on Thanksgiving day 1992 but she died 2 hours before I got to the hospital. I still remember the song Bohemian rhapsody was on my truck radio when I started the engine to leave the hospital with Freddy Mercury singing the Mama verse and that was when it hit me that my Mom was gone. Whenever I hear Bohemian rhapsody I think of Mom :*:
I think I speak for 99.9% of the people who watch your channel, you are great! Please don't let the trolls get to you. Thank you, we really appreciate what you do.
Some folk don't get it. But I've been playing fifty years and really appreciate that I can jump on your channel and quickly learn something new. You make it so accessible for me as all I need is to watch you play it. So, thank you. All the best.
The exact reason I started following you years ago was because I like figuring stuff out myself, and I'm not a purist, I don't want to know how every note is exactly bent or shook, I want the basic skeleton with tips on strumming, timing and maybe some fills, and I like your taste in music, because it's pretty much the same as mine, thanks for all the years of help, I truly appreciate it
What a great lecture at the end too...spot on. This was more like sitting with a pal like we did as young kids figuring things out...if someone got it...we shared the basics and then the whole tune....then we had to go figure it out....great stuff.
After listening to the end of this video nobody has an opinion to criticize anything you’re doing here .Ive been playing since 1963. I just retired and over the years your lesson have greatly improved my playing.thanks for all your help JJ.
My personal take on my experience is I've never practiced a minute in my time playing guitar. I enjoy it way too much to call it practice. The term practice to me means that you are required to be actively working on a given activity whether or not it's what you want to be doing. I always wanted to be playing and figuring out songs and intervals and whatever else this magical thing is going to let me coax out of it. Of course that's not a blanket statement. That's just my opinion, if you have a different opinion, then you are correct in the same way
Alright. This is i guess more than 10th time i watched this video, I can totally relate what you're saying. First time i watched "Babe I'm gonna leave you" and that was enough already to pick my first guitar ever. I started playing guitar about 6 months ago. I can totally play babe I'm gonna leave and "Going to California" . First i did watched tutorials but none helped me to improve. I sat and kept on playing by myself and trying to figure the song and feel it , pieces started to come together, . And in that journey to play "Babe i'm gonna leave you " i learnt so many other songs very easily. You are a great guitarist James. You dont teach people songs like other youtube channels , you connect people to guitar. Thanks for motivation. And keep on doing so
Regarding your comments at the end of the video, all I have to say is spot on! The reason why I keep coming back to your channel is because after decades of sporadically playing the guitar in my bedroom I reached a certain level of musical understanding and finger dexterity where I don't need someone to painstakingly (painfully) explain to me how to place my fingers on the fretboard note for note, naming each string and neck position for each chord and note (with tab). There is a great value in that for certain beginner level players who haven't yet crossed that threshold, and an over abundance of UA-cam channels catering to these aspiring players, but not many for intermediate players who appreciate expediency and a more advanced breakdown of particular musical pieces. Thank God for your channel and the efforts you put into generously sharing your knowledge and skills with those who appreciate it!
I am on tour and my guitar is in the back of the van. I think I am going to crawl to the back so I can play this with you. You've got me so excited to play this because we are going to California right now! Hello as we be rolling through New Mexico! We appreciate you.
Just know for every negative comment there are over 100 comments praising you, I would like to personally thank you for uploading this video, and all of your tutorials for that matter, as i'm sure for many other people as well your teaching style makes it so easy to get going with the song and play. Thank you.
Amen brother! You do a great job of what you do and you’re exactly right! I started in 1968 but quit in 85 for many years after marriage and kids but started back up nine years ago! Skills are earned through hard work and practice unless you are just uncommonly gifted which people like that are few and far between, most everyone including Clapton, Page, Duane Allman, Hendrix, Stevie Ray; etc; started somewhere and just lived and breathed playing and listened to records to learn, I read an article where Keith Richards was interviewed and he said he use to walk around the house with his guitar strapped on all day long! Anyone who wants to play at moderate high to very high level has to put the time in to learn, nothing is given. I never have tried to emulate any certain player but rather learn songs and then make them my own style or taste. Thanks JJ for being you and being true to yourself and others! Keep doing it your way and the ones that get will appreciate it:)
James, I've wanted to say this for a long time, a couple years, and this is the perfect video to comment. Please! hear me out. When you are demonstrating to us, at times (slightly) you go off point. BUT! You come back emediatly. And when you "go off point", you teach us something. Like.. you might say... "this chord kinda sounds like this song" Or "this riff, is in this song", and then you'll laugh, and resume the song. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, you've opened another door to our musical journey. It is such a great teaching tool that's helped me so much. If I can do this, I can do that kinda thinking. And I do! And I can! Not always lol, but I try! And I practice! I subscribe to alot of teachers and players. YOU man... Are the reason I've progressed so much over the year's! You're style of "teaching", is everything one needs. Nothing more, nothing less! Perfection! Thank You!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Never stop playing! And never stop teaching (yes teaching) lol, all of us that so greatly appreciate everything you do for the guitar community!! Glad to see you're feeling better from surgery! Stay safe!
Excellent lecture. No pain, no gain. If you don't absolutely love and desperately want to learn an instrument, you'll never stick with it. It's the LOVE of it that sustains and endures, and that's true of anything in life. It's the LOVE of anything (or anyone) and its hope and promise of reward that outweighs the suffering endured. Sermon over. Peace. 😷
You're the man. Just ignore any haters or silly people. You're the man and your tutorials have been a big help to me. Not overloaded with nonsense. You explain just enough to get people going and if you lived near me, I'd play gigs with you ANY DAY. ROCK ON man, and thank you.
I've watched several versions of this song and have never been able to get it. This is the first explanation and demonstration that makes sense and easy to emulate! Many thanks, appreciate you sharing this!
Hey James I think you touched on a very interesting point you sat in your room in the eighties and spent hours doing the "work"to figure these songs out . People need to understand that what your showing us is a gift that is free. And myself and others are extremely appreciative of what you do please don't stop.I also hope your feeling better ,going for my endoscopy on Monday.
Love your channel. I've been playing for 50 years and you're my go to for learning a song. Although I do also play Richie Blackmore and Eric Clapton. Thanks for all your dedicated and knowledgeable help.
Thank you for being so willing to put yourself out there for all of us . I apparently must be better than I would ever have otherwise given myself credit for because I absolutely love your lesson style . If you told me yesterday I would be attempting this song in double drop d , I would had my doubts but there is some kind of magic in a wooden box with six metal strings stretched across it that with a little help can be accessed by anyone who wants it bad enough and a great teacher you definitely are ! Thanks again!!!!
Ive been playing as long as you. Never posted before but thats it. These trolls piss me off mate. You are right. These are not lessons they are tips. I pick up the songs straight away. This channel is NOT for beginners its for better players that want to learn a song quickly with no bullshit.
Awesome. Thanks James. You're videos are such a great reminder of tunings, small tips and some great stories. Lowers my blood pressure from the daily news. Playing on 74 Martin D35 that i've had since 79.
Good gravy... don't even acknowledge anyone saying you're doing anything wrong. You're showing us your skills and we're all benefiting from it, and for that I'll be eternally grateful. ❤️
Not only is your instruction spot on and insightful , the life lessons needs to heard by a generation of I want it now... I can sit and listen all day... but I have to work! LOL . Thanks and never stop posting inspiration and instruction !!!
James, you are the best. I love your comments at the end. If people don’t get your gifts, then goodriddens. The James James channel took me to the next level. I only have gratitude for your work; it has given me the ability to play at a level that I dreamed of when I was in high school and now can. All praise to guitar great James!
Bravo sir, thanks as always, and thank you for stating what some of us see as obvious. Simply and frankly put, from the PT days through today, you have allowed me to know my potential as a function of what I can figure out with MY efforts. I no longer hear songs as a 'i can never play that' and instead, 'i like that riff or technique, i bet i can figure it out' (and often do). Now, i go back to stuff i grew up with and am playing all that today. In part, i blame you.. :-) thanks again JJ. God bless and keep you sir.
Nice!!! Good ears!!! AND playing. I never thought that when this album came out there would still be so much love for this music. We wondered what our kids would be listening to. It's so funny. I thought the opposite. That you weren't showing off. I started playing in 1971.
99% of us get it. Don’t forget that. I comment very little but I listen a lot and I appreciate it. I’m not expecting to play as well as you, yet, but it’s steps and going above my current ability is what keeps my wanting to practice more. Your videos help. A lot.
I play exactly the way you do... You learn the chords of one song and those chords lead you into another song and so forth. After a while, you start putting things together. You start seeing the relationships between different songs, chords, and riffs.....and it all snowballs. I would say the most important thing for a novice rock player is to learn 3 chord blues and the major and minor pentatonic scale to those keys... Even if blues isn't your style of music..... The influence of blues to the rock world is immense and can't be overstated. You learn what keys are and how the scales are married to the chords. It's easy to learn and a great jumping off point to other styles of rock....
Your videos are a treasure. This is one of my favorites. Years ago I had a friend come by my office with a mandolin and I had my guitar with me- and we gave this a try. Clearly needed this video.
James James, thank you for another great tutorial. You are 100% correct. We are not entitled to you or your time. Please count me as one of the grateful who appreciate that you are healthy and sharing your techniques with us. You are a treasure to this great hobby of guitar playing. Thank you for sharing your talents and insights! I appreciate you!
Yeah, I sometimes wonder why I want to just play other people's classic guitar riffs, chords and songs on my acoustic. But it is one of the most pleasing things I have EVER done. Most mornings I'm up before everyone and I get time to myself and do what I love. There's nothing in this world like the vibration of my Martin against my body and the sound coming out of it that almost always takes me to a very enriching place, it's my personal heaven... and it is people like you that help me get there... especially for those songs I can't quite figure out on my own. Peace, brother!
Ignore the noise, as you said just people who Don't want to put in the work to learn the instrument. Specifically a problem with people who grew up in the participation award crowd that never really learned that "Hard Work" is the key to success.....................
Hey my Brother I never met you but I have been in different bands over years but stopped playing when I lost friends in shooting at VT. IN 2007 AND I HADN'T PLAYED SINCE THEN I HEARD YOU DOING COVERS OF STONES EVERYTHING CCR.PINK FLOYD AND I PICK UP MY GUITAR AGAIN 2012 YOU BEEN A BLESSING TO ME PLEASE DON'T STOP. NO MATTER THESE LOSERS SAY GOD BLESS YOU YOUR FAMILY. MY BROTHER I MUSIC. YOU THE BEST. BILL IN VIRGINIA
Me and my buddy are 70 years old and love your utubes and style.for the complainers, try picking up the needle on a record and playing over and over again until you learned a riff.thats how we started
Thank you James. Gave me enough to get started on this song without having to spend a ton of time figuring out each bit. Appreciate it. Keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing!!
Wow, I wonder if he looks at these comments anymore...he abruptly quit YOuTube last year but left people with a lot of material...very cool dude. I had to reverse comments to see if people were still watching these...guess so!
Thanks James twice im 65 been playing since I was 10 u make it fun .and f anybody who doesn't get it!! I'm still learning and you make it so I can continue to learn.
First of all, THANK YOU!! I understand what you're saying about learning how to learn to play. I have been working on this song for at least 4 years on and off. I always appreciate your explanations and often defer to your lessons as the basis for my songs. Not everyone will learn from your style but they can go buy lessons!
I'm living in Munich/Germany and have buyed a guitar before 2 years. Your lessons are great, thank you. It's a little difficult for me because I'm a beginner but it is possible. As you say practice is everything.
.. the amazing song as in the 1971 album was performed mainly by the multi talented John Paul Jones on mandolin. with Jimmy Page backing on guitars .. Robert Plant's vocals was like 'wow' .. btw. this song is in my all time favorite tune list
At 53, working full time, I wish I could lock myself in my man cave with my guitars. Sometimes I do, and then I feel like I'm starting over because it's been too long. It is what it is, but I get inspired by your videos and as I get better at picking and strumming, and chord transitions, I am able to play more and figure things out more. I only wish I could find some people to play with which I think would go a long way to improving as well. Anyway, thanks for all you do!
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. It's truly a great pleasure to watch and learn from you. You are truly a gentleman and a scholar. Be well.
There is something magic in this song. Jimmy Page was 27 when they recorded this. Many musicians have their best creativity in their life about 26 to 29.
Especially get a kick out of the zero content critics “that’s not the way it’s played”. Wish I would had this platform when I was a kid. I struggled with zeppelin tunes. Growing up in the middle of nowhere, had no clue there was a such thing as alternative tuning.
Clearly you play like a whole bunch of people want to play, your subscriber list says it all. We all appreciate the great song selection and style and skill. !!
James James, just the best straight forward to help fill in the little tricks to get the sound correct... But you have to know how to play the guitar.... Thank you james keep it up.. - I'm from Rochester and Lov the H.O.G. shirts !! The great great house of guitars!!!
Man you just straightened me out on that song!! I have a 1988 Yamaha APX 20 and it now sounds righteous!! In double drop D, with this song--it sounds "Angelic"
I can relate James. And I have forgotten more stuff than I play these days...near 60 years old. And I try to show people how to play. To give them the tools to learn the music they want. They're clueless most of the time! Most of the time I give up on them. Hope you're still posting. I got something out of what you put up. At the pace it was done. Good job, sir! Btw...it's the same with model building. Both model building and mpalying music are for the patient at heart. And talent...like you have, doesn't hurt at all!
I don't know which of the lessons was killer here , the actual song or the attitude adjustment ! Both were good and uplifting ! Enjoying the journey and let the arrival arrive ! Thanks
Tricker...I love that you made the point at the end that playing guitar takes time...OUR time, not YOURS. I am no where near your ability but I love your videos and listening to you play and explain things. Keep up the good work and the variety!
Exactly a guitar player showing guitar players songs and tunings, I personally could not figure out the tuning but alas here it is without unnecessary explanation.Thank you got a new subscriber.✌️
James thank you so much for these. I'm 62, and we went nuts in high school trying to figure these out, which was difficult at best with no internet, etc., and you probably recall how reclusive the band was (Grant was brilliant). Still have my '77 ticket stubs for the outrageous price of $8.50 for 'An Evening With Led Zeppelin'. Thank you again -best guitar channel on the net.
@@jamesjames9275 Cincinnati, two nights, general admission (before the Who tragedy). Night one center, very close, so unbelievably loud I had no idea what the first songs were. Night 2 moved back, sounded great, fantastic "Song Remains The Same" first, and I *think*, "Sick Again" 2nd. Acoustic set was beautiful.
JJ,Thank you for this site,I've played 40 years ,I put you on and in half and hour these songs are under my fingers,if I put the screws to the wood in a couple days I can sound like these artists...and JJ it does not escape me how close you are to JP on this one..
I’ve always been so close to getting this one and you just helped me put it together and that is why when I’m stuck on something I look through your videos! Thanks brother, keep picking!
James, You're absolutely right man! You have to put in the time, and once you do, everything begins to fall together. I appreciate you and what you're doing on your channel. Thanks for the explanation. I was having trouble with the middle and now it's crystal clear. You're the best!
James, thank you very much for a fantastic body of work!! and serving the guitar playing community with your knowledge and skills. I for one think you are a gifted teacher and have taught me a lot. Don't let the numbskulls get to you buddy, they're best ignored. keep on keepimg on...peace man
Hey James james ... I like what you said towards the end of your video , I have been putting in the extra hours recently and this has given me a whole new perspective on playing.... in fact I read the tab for this song, practised for hours and hours and then came to your channel to watch you play it as you do ... after putting the time in before watching your video your technique made more sense to me and this made it easier to follow ... this is such a nice tune and I find I can relax while playing it, even if I make a mistake it sometimes blends in and this makes it fun... because music should be fun and people should learn music to make their hearts warmer not to impress other people or be the best. ... thank you for taking the time to go over this... peace.
Love the style you show how you play! I've only been playing around 3 years soon but these types of videoes show me so much more than those unnessecarely long videoes repeating everything over and over. Wishing you all the best James!
Thanks James, I totally get it,and I'm fighting back from a head injury in 2006, wishing you and family happy holidays, thanks for the learning experience
You definitely hold your own. The right people will learn. We are not robots and some folks will take a different route. Like to know more about your guitar as well. Give it up for us who wish to know. Thanks James - Knowledge is power.
Who ever the idiot was who said stop “showing off” he is a jerk you are brilliant I’ve always been aware that you lay out the basics of the song so that we can add our own individual seasoning…..long may you continue.
Just stumbled across your channel a few days ago. Thanks for all your hard work. I will never have to look around for another guitar resource again. Amazing collection of music. I'm in the process of teaching my 12 year old son how to play and your channel will be invaluable. Thank you!! (accidentally sent this from my step sons account)

Sorry for your loss, sir.
That's not easy. Take care of yourself.
I know Craig, my Mother was my biggest fan, Shhe passed 3 years ago, my Dad following, God bess our great parents and you. keep playing.
keep playing through it.

I love what you said at the end about “you’re not entitled...”.
Well said.
Man...I miss these videos...I hope all is well James. Thanks for what you shared with us brother!

Drop D drone is magical, I’ve been watching you for years and never gets old coming back and watching your videos.🍻
Well said, guitar is all about PRACTICE there are no short cuts, period..
Thanks James!

Bloody brilliant, I’m a 60 year old beginner one year of playing and I get a lot out of your lessons. Sod the moaners ❤️
I really love how you explain the differences of what you hear between the “studio” and various live versions of the song. Thanks so much!
Best guitar channel out there. I hope you never stop posting. 👍

Thanks dude! I started playing in 1970 and I’m still learning something new every time I pick up one of my guitars, again, thanks
Incredible tutorial. Always dreamed of playing this song. Thank you for posting this and all your other stuff. God Bless and Go Bills.

Pure positivity from me Jimmy boy. We appreciate the great stuff you do and your love for great music
Nice lesson. Easy to follow and very learnable. Thanks for this great lesson.

One of my favorite Zeppelin songs! Thank you very much for sharing

Your style of playing and teaching is the best I have seen! That’s just me. I know what I like!
Just wanted to say A BIG THANKS these videos have really helped me improve my playing.
I was already following you, but you just moved up to become my favorite UA-cam channel. You’re a great teacher, and an honest guitar player ❤️🙏🏻
James you're a great teacher with a great personality & mad skills! " Illegitimi non carborundum" - "don't let the bastards grind you down"
Hey my Brother I never met you but I have been in different bands over years but stopped playing when I lost friends in shooting at VT.
Been listening to your lessons for years thank you iam better for it. You don't even have to speak I just watch your fingers
Yes James! keep going. Been watching you for years and will do for the years to come
First of all, THANK YOU!! I understand what you're saying about learning how to learn to play. I have been working on this song for at least 4 years on and off. I always appreciate your explanations and often defer to your lessons as the basis for my songs. Not everyone will learn from your style but they can go buy lessons!
WOW! What a fantastic lesson! You, my man, are one HELL of a guitar instructor!!!!
I'm living in Munich/Germany and have buyed a guitar before 2 years. Your lessons are great, thank you. It's a little difficult for me because I'm a beginner but it is possible. As you say practice is everything.
JJ - your channel is superb; absolutely no “showing off” here at all, in any way!! thanks so much for your generosity and talent.
.. the amazing song as in the 1971 album was performed mainly by the multi talented John Paul Jones on mandolin. with Jimmy Page backing on guitars .. Robert Plant's vocals was like 'wow' .. btw. this song is in my all time favorite tune list
Tx James sweet lesson Im going to give it a go and have fun with it and learn from doing and practicing. 😊 your the best!!
I love when I search for my favorite songs, I always find you playing them. You are best, by far, my favorite thing about UA-cam. Many thanks!
A song i was always intimidated by. Thank you James ! Your time is appreciated... This is great, its up to me now .
Be well.
Love the lecture. Great lesson, as always, brother Jimmy James.
Best lesson for this song I’ve come across. Thank you for this, and so many others of yours I’ve enjoyed.
There is something magic in this song. Jimmy Page was 27 when they recorded this. Many musicians have their best creativity in their life about 26 to 29.
I like the way you put that to that guy I still practice all the time does not come easy nothing does thank you for your lessons you great
listening to you play with the rain in the background and actually getting some explanations. Heaven. Keep it up thanks so much.
People get very demanding on UA-cam, considering they are getting lessons for free.
Yep. A lot of knobheads out there
Bitches be like.........whaaaaaaa!!!
Awesome explanation! Thank you for the led zeppelin lessons!
Nice comments at the end. I appreciate your approach. Thanks!
Man you just straightened me out on that song!! I have a 1988 Yamaha APX 20 and it now sounds righteous!! In double drop D, with this song--it sounds "Angelic"
Much appreciate James. You are one of the best.
I just found yer channel today. Your approach works for me. It's refreshing.
Great lesson!
Hope you are and continue to be well!
Wonderful patient demonstration🙏👍
Perfect... appreciate every note. And yes... if your a beginner this is not for you. Practice makes perfect... hope your feeling better JJ.
"Most people do get it." Thanks. GREAT videos.
Cool, where did you see Zeppelin in 77?
James,
You're absolutely right man!
Don't let the numbskulls get to you buddy, they're best ignored. keep on keepimg on...peace man
I've been practicing this tune for 5 years and still learning , getting pointers from everywhere I can ex;JJ thanks JJ Godbless
Nothing the beats a "master class" stylist - each subtle nuance discovered before our eyes.
Just heard your rant! Loved it! All power to you, and definitely maybe will pick up my acoustic again. Even if I don't, thank you for your wisdom!
Hey James james ... I like what you said towards the end of your video , I have been putting in the extra hours recently and this has given me a whole new perspective on playing.... in fact I read the tab for this song, practised for hours and hours and then came to your channel to watch you play it as you do ... after putting the time in before watching your video your technique made more sense to me and this made it easier to follow ... this is such a nice tune and I find I can relax while playing it, even if I make a mistake it sometimes blends in and this makes it fun... because music should be fun and people should learn music to make their hearts warmer not to impress other people or be the best. ... thank you for taking the time to go over this... peace.
You are the best ever, James James. I learn fast from you.
