My grandfather moved to india with his family after the partition when he was young. They lived in Bangladesh at the time and had to smuggle themselves upriver on a small fishing boat. Their only possessions were my great grandmother’s jewellery and they survived on that and did a few odd jobs for months until my great grandfather got a job at a railway station. They lost their land, homes and all their savings. It was a hard time for everyone.

💥MAJOR correction - Partition wasn't between Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India but Muslim Pakistan who thought they can't coexist with Hindus and a Secular India comprising of Hindus, Muslims, Christians etc. It is reflected in the present day population of the 2 Nations too. While India today has almost as many Myslims as Pakistan = 200 million... Pakistan's non Muslim population has shrunk from 15% to 1%

This conflict is the perfect example of how nuclear deterrence and MAD paradoxically prevents large scale wars and destruction better than any treaties or economic integration or other incentives could.

I doubt Pakistan will ever start any war, they'd be rolled in a conventional war. India one day might try to exploit Pakistan's weakness under a different administration. Pakistan has first strike doctrine I think. Moment something bad happens, such as critical infrastructure hit or communication is cut off (which a component military would do as a first thing) they'll most likely launch the nukes. Anyone in their position would.
Nowadays Putin for example, if pushed out of Ukraine completely and threatened with his own or family's lives would most likely push button for smaller attacks. Why not, he and his family is going to die, what left for him?

In the 1971 war, U.S.A and U.K had come to fight with India from Pakistan's side and was also supporting Pakistan's genocide in United nations. India got 93000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered even after U.S. and U.K came. Because USSR supported that Time INDIA.

The "Cold Start Doctrine" genesis lies in the 1987 Operation Brasstacks, conducted under the Indian Army COAS General KV Krishna Rao. It was put on hold in the 90s but in 2001 after Indian Parliament Terror Attack, India mobilized over 700k Troops along the International Border, but it took nearly 2 months to achieve the offensive posturing while Pakistan managed to mobilize 300k of its own troops. After Months of Skirmishes and Artillery Duels, India had to back down (under US Pressure). India's performance in the 2001-02 Border Standoff with Pakistan (codename: Operation Parakram), forced the Indian Armed Forces to re evaluate their strategy and restart the Cold Start Doctrine.

Both nations want to avoid war, as the result of nuclear exchange is obviously the end of both nations. So even a(nother) border skirmish is extremely unlikely to escalate far beyond that. Both nations have extensive political connections to prevent such a war.
Also the Rutgers study that claims "2 billion" would die from India Pakistan nuclear war was flawed as it models things like volcanic eruptions to simulate climate shifts following a nuclear war. The soot ejected by volcanoes does not quite aerosol the same way as soot ejected by nuclear strikes. Lastly the "2 billion" figure requires 250 100kt bombs which not even India + Pakistan combined have. Both India and Pakistan's delivery systems each cap out at about 40 kt each.
The "2 billion die if they go to war" is not only factually wrong, it's blatant scaremongering disinformation. You don't have to lie about nuclear war for people to understand that it's really, really bad.

Nukes are highly overrated in public perception. They have very little practical applications, except as a deterrent to other nuclear powers. Even if used while locally devastating once outside the radius of total destruction rapidly diminishing effects. The real casualties would occur indirectly.
I haven't seen much of the video yet, I came to the comments right away but I could personally see it being somewhere close to that bad. It's not that the nukes would do it, they'd kill a ton of people for sure but also the destabilization, rioting, famine and disease that come with disasters of that level, refugee crisis (That's a lot of people moving to next door countries) and then frequently criminal organizations rise to power and that can be a problem for decades. 2 billion is a bit overzealous I think but it would be a ludicrous amount of people. death on a scale humans have never seen before.

During 65 war there were territorial changes . Indian soldiers were almost at Lahore when ceasefire was announced and US being US , asked both countries to pull back to their original borders . Only because its adorable ally Pakistan was at the losing end .
Indian forces were stopped and instead Pakistan started advancing into Indian territory. India never gained any territory in any war whatsoever. 47, lost half of Kashmir. 65 was stalemate with Indian suffering heavy casualties dispute being 5 times Pakistan forces. 71 even though Bangladesh gained independence, india still never gained any territory instead lost some on western front such as Chamb sector. So get your facts right.
All wars were started by Pakistan. So instead of saying india didn't gain territory, you should say it the other way, that Pakistan didn't gain any territory. We didn't start wars with intention to invade and grab land.

My grandfather, and grandmother were both about 10 when the partition happened. Neither of them spoke much about it. Both of them were orphans, raised by missionaries. My grandfather told me one story. He used to have to take the train from Lahore, to Agra (Pakistan to India) for boarding school. He would pretend to be blind and sell tea on the trains so they would leave him alone. He told me he passed so many trains that had been burned filled with people, and he could never forget the smell.

Pls correct your info. India wasn’t divided into a muslim nation and a Hindu nation. Contiguous areas where Muslims were a majority was carved out of India for “Muslims”. But in the remaining “India”, people of all faiths were free to stay and they DID stay and actually thrived. About as many muslims remained in India as were in Pakistan at the time of creation of Pakistan. Now there are slightly less because Pakistan and Bangladesh (earlier Eastern Pakistan) saw a very fast population rise due to high fertility rates. India isn’t a Hindu Nation. The partition is a really complex topic. You can't do it justice during a minute summary on a different topic. Its hard to do it justice in dedicated videos. There is so much that happened and so many people involved and so much blame thrown around and so much that it resulted in.

Good intro to the problem but definitely one that can be explored so much more. We indians are not much worried about a war with Pakistan any more. They are dependent on IMF handouts and aid from China & the middle east to provide food of all things to its large populace. Given any form of war, India can sustain it economically for years where Pakistan will be decemated economically within a week. Its not about warheads, tanks, carriers, its just the difference in the respective economic conditions. Yes there will be a lot of losses in the Indian side , but Pakistan as a country would probably cease to exist. So, we dont sweat much about an Indo - Pak war anymore. An Indo - China war is our biggest concern.

Until the recent BJP government got elected in India, i would say there was no chance India would start a war, but now im not so sure. Pakistan has started all the 4 wars in the past, and India for some reason had a policy of not attacking unless attacked first. Large scale tank use will not work anywhere at the border outside of Northern Punjab and the Greater Jammu Region, due to the deserts that cover the entire central and southern borders (Refer Battle of Longewala in the past). Likely the first thing to happen if Pakistan invades is ordinary skirmishes on land at the entire central-south stretch, tank battles in punjab and western jammu, and terrorists infiltrating Kashmir Valley through the village of Keran, and in Kargil. The Indian Ground army would easily make it to the Indus River uptill Bahawalpur and Hyderabad in South Punjab and Sindh of Pakistan, but face a tough challenge in North Punjab and Greater Jammu. Kashmir and Kargil would be emptied of Pakistani army quite fast and the push to Skardu and Neelum would start. The entire Pakistani navy would be gone by that point. The main Pakistani power would be focused on air only, bombing cities of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi, maybe even deep into UP and MP. A naval blockade would ensue and Gwadar, Makran would be occupied by India and Karachi under siege. I dont think Karachi would fall. Lahore too under siege. I think the war will end when India has reached Islamabad, after finishing Neelum, Skardu, Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Lahore, etc. I dont think nuclear weapons would be used by either side.

Simon, you should do a TopTenz on the times when the British arbitrarily created/divided countries with no real perspective of the affected populations.
To be fair in many situations there wasn't a clear way to divide countries and in some cases the divisions were along pre existing internal borders and most countries don't draft internal borders to make them effective coujtries on their own (just look at virtually every US and Canadian state/province border). In many places like Africa and the Middle East there hadn't been individual countries and the ethnic/religious/tribal borders were muddy at best and borders before colonialism were extremely vague, modern maps of those coujtries are often just vague blobs or involve gradients since control was rarely defined with any accuracy and control was often even more vague (Afghanistan for example has borders similar to what it had before their wars with the UK but the king rarely had much control outside of a few major cities with the various tribes controlling most of the country). Its arguable that if the British did want to divide the Indian sub continent breaking the region up to its pre colonial borders would work even better since that would leave the region divided and squabbling, and they'd be unable to effectively defend themselves against Chinese imperialism or neocolonialism like they are today.

@@neutralboi1984 they are under enemy occupation that doesn't make it disputed. A dispute arises when both sides lay their respective claims on a territory. In case of Kashmir, Pakistan or China have no material claims to show. Only India have material claims to the Whole kashmir valley and Gilgit Baltistan region. I hope you understand now.

Let me give you an example
Kalapani, a border between nepal and india is disputed.
The treaty of suguali mentions nepal's western border is made up of mahakali river. Mahakali river flows west of kalapani so it belongs nepal. But nepal has no control over it, india has (under pittoragarh)
Same case here except that the claims by other side is even strong as they have actual land under their control
@@neutralboi1984 Claims get strong on the basis of merit. Kalapani is not comparable with Kashmir. For kalapani the Indian and nepal government (both hindu majority nations) have their point of view and they are open in public.
In case of kashmir the instrument of accession is the sole document for the status of the region of Kashmir and that lies with India. Pakistan has nothing to show and the world knows pakistan is an illegal encroacher of Indian lands. The same goes for China. China is also illegal encroacher of part of ladakh.
When compared to what is happening in Europe and the Middle East, India, Pakistan, and China are doing an admirable job of not going to war with each other.
I think you forgot the statement of the previous Pakistan Army general saying that they don't have enough oil to wage war for more than 2 days. So obviously India will win if there are no nukes involved.
