- If you can't build a mix quickly, you might want to limit the amount of sound coming at you. Gregory Scott, the brain behind Kush Audio's analog gear and plugins, shares weird and interesting tips for how to build better mixes faster, easier, and with way more style.
Check out www.thehouseofkush.com and slap some sweet Kush flavor on your productions now, because the world has enough boring mixes!
I'm calling it now, this channel will blow up.
Yup
For sure. Some people just Have it.
Word to, this man dropping gems
Well, with all that Kush Audio gear plugged in to a single electrical point, that's a definite possibility.
I agree
My mind is pregnant now
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hold up, hell no, that's my mind baby daddy lol.
😹
@Walter B his voice being seductive. Duh
Hahahahaha
Kush, I’m an artist who needs to engineer my own stuff. You’re the first non-generic UA-camr who actually seems to “get it” and have taste without boring the hell out of me.
You have this amazing subtle approach and you don’t make it overly confusing. You just approach it like art. Thanks
Thank you brother, your words mean a lot. I'm in the same boat, I engineer my own music, have done for 25 years and had to figure out how to break thru a lot of walls along the way. I'm so incredibly excited to start sharing everything I know in a way that might actually reach a meaningful number of people, IMHO the world of engineering needs more flavor! Thanks for the support!
@@TheHouseofKushTV your recent video on vocal EQ was a gamechanger. just small things like that. It doesn't have to be so mystic..
why do all the other channels want to play bad music examples? or just review a really specific plugin process? Or someone who's just learning in a home studio posting instructionals?
Had CreativeSoundLab for tracking. (not a lot on what to do after its tracked)
But now got this one for mixing!
Maybe its because i'm not interested in making it sound like a Rhianna record but the good channels are hard to come by!
NOT: SECRETZ OF COMPRESSION! DON@T DO THIS! GET A GRAMMY BUY THIS PLUGIN NAO! ALL TEH PROZ DO THIS!
@@jorgepeterbarton I've often said, "Rhianna is the sexiest robot in the business!"
@@TheHouseofKushTV Love that analogy. Was just listening to that Waves Rhianna 808 free plugin before I came by your channel today. That sound is so generic on those hip hop recordings at this point in time. I wish it would just fade away. Diggin your channel man. Love the tips. My musics here. Wish I had your skills. :) lostatthecontrols.bandcamp.com/album/subconscious-cortex-stimulator-2
Thank you for not shouting and swearing at me like every other UA-cam sound engineer. LOL. Good stuff man:)
Like a lot of us, I'm on the spectrum, mine just manifests towards the quiet end :-P
Hahahaha I can’t stand the screamers trying to make up for their lack of personality.
I know exactly who came to mind first. We all probably did. Lol
lol i wrote exact the same coment on the first house of kush video i watched. hopefully other guys will get it too.
Hey man... Glenn may yell but he knows what's hes talking about. I enjoy his jokes and personality although I do prefer the quietness and calmness. We all knew who we were talking about I just said the name lol
this "triangulation" approach is a breath of fresh air against the "solo" approach so many youtube mixers can get stuck in. Sound is interactive. Sound is weird. Our brains are weird.
Agreed on all counts, especially "brains are weird." :-)
Never mix anything in solo. That's pointless waste of time. Solo is for when you need to hear something going on in this track, like a noise you wanna get rid of or anything that is very specific to that track that requires you to hear it in solo. Don't care about how anything sounds in solo because it is only how it sounds in the mix that is of interest. A track can sound like total crap in solo but magic in the context of a mix. Or it can sound brilliant in solo, but just disappear in the mix. Everything must always be mixed in context with something. Either it's the full mix or the triangulation this video is talking about.
I agree man.. Ian about to try it in 30 seconds. Just always too many sounds coming at me
Such a vague explanation but, somehow, you still nailed it! 😆🤜🤛🙌
Not even a single "umm" "ahh" when he talks about his craft. That just goes on to show how deep his understanding goes
Also, some tasteful editing never hurt 😛
jump cuts? lol
There is one at 1:05 - he also uses "and" insted of "umm" and "ahh" which is more tasteful
This does not take away from what he is saying however, I enjoy his videos and the value within.

"Who knew?" When you think you've seen it all then you find kush after hours. Fresh ideas. I'm watching like: "Jesus can you make me your disciple". I love this channel.
His name is actually Gregory...
@@joelybarish4618 "Three Sounds" Gregory. :)
This guy is soooo charismatic and the info is soooo golden.
so are your teeth.
Most of the time you get to channels in which the tools are more important the intention.
*Thanks* for talking abouth the intention of mix instead of only how to use tools.
Thanks for recognizing that! Yeah, a big reason why I'm doing videos is because I find the "why" is generally overlooked or even assumed by those who've internalized their process (or, in many cases, don't actually understand it themselves).
I got to sit in a masterclass with Chris Lorde-Alge and he said that he only mixes L C R style on everything, and then uses stereo FX like reverbs and delays to ever so slightly fill up the rest of the space. He also made most everything in mono too, other than keyboards during the session. I was sort of surprised by this, but it makes sense. You end up with a really punchy mix. You can also collapse it down to mono and everything gels together in a phase coherent way.
So...CLA does LCR...that's AOK
I need a hardware mono button for that reason. Always forget to check mono but once I accidentally mixed in mono without noticing the mix actually came out as the best I have ever done. Just minor stereo tweaks after that and I called it done.
Seems like your main message in these vids is always: slow tf down and listen.
That’s gold.
It’s something I needed to hear and probably something that most of us need to hear.
TRIANGLES! Yay...they work for everything...speaker position...um arrows...um. Seriously, I cant believe how similar mixing is to HDR photo composition, push/pull, foreground, midground, backgroumd, blur/focus, brightness/contrast...seeing aurally is the key which I think you are translating here Greg. Always good vids
Love the triangulation approach. Brilliant. So helpful for arrangements that aren’t finalized too.
Shit, until I bounce, NO arrangement is finalized! :-P

A true artist learns their craft, not because it elevates their status, but because they must for the sake of their own sanity. In the pursuit of mastery, there is no substitute for time spent honing one's skills, whether in solitude or among kindred spirits. And there is no meaning, without guiding others toward enlightenment as well.
This channel is zen. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

Years of mixing, tutorials, books, etc, have gotten some of my best advice from this channel
How to get a good mix.
First step:

- Smoke Kush

Don't forget:
6. Repeat Step 5

When is the tutorial on becoming a sexy PERSON coming out?
Some things can't be taught :-P
😂
@@TheHouseofKushTV If your life is not feeling sexy, chances are you are overwhelmed by all the elements in it coming at you at once. Start focusing on triangles of smaller aspects of your life, and just focus on making those sexier together. Is your way of speaking not working for you? Are you insecure about some things? Are you lacking some spice? Zone in on a few of those and just work on making those work better together. Keep balancing out these smaller aspects of your sexiness, improving things locally, and before too long you'll find your life as a whole becoming sexier as you go.
The fun thing about good knowledge and techniques is that they are not tied to specific domains, but can apply to many other aspects of life. :)

Holy shit, you have my subscription. Clicked on skeptical and was hypnotized by how pragmatic and thoughtful these methods are
Thanks for giving my ideas a shot 😊
Wow, just tried triangle thing, in 5 minutes my mix sounded more balanced than ever managed to get. Thank you so much!!
Woohoo, success!
I've learned so much more in so little time from this channel than from the expensive six month sound engineering program I took back in college! Thank you!
I dont care what people say about nickleback the singer is humble enough to show us how he does music production thats awsome
Easily my favorite channel to get the juices flowing 🙌🏽
Fellow recording enthusiasts - we've struck gold! Thank you! Both for the content, and also for the smoothest intro ever.
Glad you enjoy it!
I like how you only show the screen or the daw when you need to, it makes it much easier to go with my taste when taking your advice into account, vs trying to get 50 hz to be peaking around -6 for “technically right” stuff
Wow, THANK YOU UA-cam algorithm for bringing me to this channel! Great ideas, great guy, I love these videos man! These are such good ideas for me as a, like, intermediate beginner when it comes to recording, starting out to do recordings and production on my own. I have watched what feels like millions of tutorials and "15 tips about compression EVERYBODY is getting wrong!" - videos but it's just too much. 15,000 people telling you what to do doesn't really get you there. At least that's what I found to be true for myself. You are giving me frickin homework! You are showing me ways to experiment, try stuff out, work with it and then give me a couple of hints of what to look and listen for so that I develop those skills myself and it turns out THAT is exaclty what I need. Everybody learns best in different ways. Some people can remember stuff best when they read it. Some have to see it in action. Some have to try it for themselves. Turns out I'm in that third category. I seem to learn best when I work with what I'm trying to learn, make my own mistakes and little successes and get a feeling for the whole process rather than trying to copy somebody elses finished and polished process to get to somebody else's final result. Great videos! Defo sub! :)
Thanks for 'getting it'! Yeah, the examples and demonstrations will come, when I'm getting really granular and need people to hear details they probably never could otherwise. But for stuff like this, if folks aren't willing to turn off YT, pan LCR and mute RMix, I'm not the teacher for them :-)
Must say I can't believe I ignored this for a while before deciding to click. I thought it was one of those click bait type vids. Man was I wrong. I was shifting in my seat from excitement within 2 minutes of this video!!
@@loubot3332 Woohoo!
20 years rec’ing, and these ideas are things i never thought of. def gonna change it up. 👌👌👌👌
To understand frequency, by experiencing frequency. Wow. This is biblical bud. Thank you for sharing this. The second technique, mixing in triangles, mixing three families and then switching out one family with another to mix it against them, to really feel how say drums bass and cello mix compared to drums bass and guitar, and cross referencing what you’re hearing, it will end up generating a memorization of frequency, where you will eventually know what will sound good where before experimenting, or at least be in the best starting direction you can. That rocked. I may never try them the exact way you explained but it’s already changed my approach, and I’m not even home. My mind is different.
Right on, that (tweaking/altering the mindset) is exactly why I do this show the way I do 😊
This is probably the best mixing advice I've ever got on UA-cam.. Thank u.. U got urself a fan
Thank you for the wisdom. Give and receive love.
2:54 That novel you've been working on...
Thanks for the great vibes and new ideas, as always!
So good! Man, out of all of the audio channels that I stumble upon, it was an immediate subscribe for me. Thanks for not making every video 45 minutes and cutting right to the chase. It's amazing what happens when you just talk conceptually and immediately are able to apply it to the listener. Well done!
Wow, thanks! More to come!!
soooo I tried this on my very amature mix song, and OMG I dialed in the guitars just right, and using the 100hz, 1kh, 10kh trick with some add. tweaking on the guitar melody. And then, following another after hours video I made the snare just so snappy that it cut through it all, and man, when I flipped that mono L switch back to stereo, i just wanted to hug you. Thank you so much, sincerly a rather drunk and happy follower indeed
This is the last time i'll watch any other "how to mix" tutorial other than Kush after Hour. Sheesh what a GODSEND!

Always love that Barry White jingle
A Masterclass and college course every video. I'm going to save up some money for some new UBK plugins. Mr. Gregory Scott, you are a Planetary Treasure.
I'm going to share my band's songs here soon on a back channel. You can tell the evolution between the mixing at first and the mixing I am doing on later songs. This is the best channel I have ever subbed to for helping me with my craft.
Thanks Mr. Scott and UBK!
Started watching your channel yesterday at 10pm. Couldn't stop watching before 3 a.m. Awsome hints and concepts. Especially because they are not focused on plugins and gear but on art, feel and psycological aspects of mixing and sound. Absolutely love this approach. Greez from Berlin!
Awesome! Thank you!
These videos are some of the best I've seen on UA-cam for mixing. A lot of stuff out there talks about butchering and hacking your way through a mix with no real reasoning other than "it works". The stuff from Greg is so well thought out, I now need to check out his gear since I'm going to assume the same amount of attention was put into that as well.
Right on, thanks for the support!
I need to see/hear someone doing it. Very interesting approach!! I’ll try it
by far my favorite mixing channel.. have learned more about audio in the last 2 weeks than I have my entire life. Love u papa g.
This is THE good stuff. Your approach to teaching is both refreshing and really effective. I've read people complaining that you only tell but dont show but I'd argue that's precisely why your content is so good. The full lesson is given when WE are the ones to demonstrate what's been taught through practice, not by seeing someone else do it.
Also, I heard Sneaky Little Devils - pretty good stuff too. Those songs are quickly going to my reference mixes.
Thanks for "getting it". There will always be critics and complainers, I just ignore 'em :-)
I love this damn channel!

The new guy on UA-cam, making an impression! If you keep it up on your insightful and not too technical conversations, you'll do just fine!
Great plugins, Great hardware, Great information. Absolutely thorough and clean with the explanations - have been using Kush for a little over a month and a half now... my goodness the difference it has made for my mixes is amazing.

The quality and usefulness of the vids in this channel are

Very nice to have tips on the thinking behind the mixing process, instead of the technical aspects of executing it. In some ways it's much more important.
Kush afterhours and Sneaky Little Devil releases... My two favorite things.
UBK Happy Funtime Hour? ;)
I just LOVE LOVE LOVE your mixing videos!!!! I am testing out everything you suggest and I am discovering a whole new world of sound! Thank you and please keep on doing videos!!!
I've seen hundreds of how-to vids for the home studio crowd, but Gregory lays it out best and breaks through the mystique. I don't smoke kush anymore, but maybe I should make some brownies. I have a ridiculously minimal set-up and can barely squeeze out the sounds I want. Pass me the kush.
You are my sound guru. Long live Kush!!!
Happy to help!
I have trouble mixing & mastering my music so i outsourced for so long, but no more! I'm going to learn as much as i can and your channel has already helped me a great deal! Thank you!
Little did he know, that decision was the beginning of the end...
Every single one of your tips is awesome. To me, it feels like you just keep on making grand-slam videos in terms of accuracy and helpfulness. I've seen a few of these tips and tricks in other videos (after years of searching for GOOD information), but you give the best descriptions I've seen in terms of what quality of the sound to listen to. For example, you describe the quality of a LCR mix vs other mixes in a way that I can intuit from the tracks I've heard myself. In another video, the way you explained how to balance vocals and the snare was superb. I can imagine what you're describing so I know how to implement it in my own practices.
Thank you.
This channel is gold man, so happy i found it!
There are so many videos out there that focus on how to use mixing tools, but there are very few that comment on approach to mixing, which is what I find every time I visit this channel. Thank you
Thanks, and I agree, there's way too little discussion on the mindset or thinking behind the process. I think it's easy for those of us with experience to forget how much we know, how many complex and interactive layers there are behind the things that feel like a single, automatic choice to us. I'm tryna break it down!
@@TheHouseofKushTV a very late reply but just thought I'd say the triangulation process has just helped me mix my first full release. Thanks again

Next thing i know i've missed half of what they were saying/showing us and have to start again which robs me of my momentum and motivation lol stay swaggy coach your vibes are on point!
I appreciate that! I'll definitely be doing audio examples as well, but I'll make sure I'm keeping the flow manageable, it gets too easy to be distracted by looking when we should be listening :-)
@@TheHouseofKushTV On the visual distraction point, I'm trying to move away from the screen staring workflow we've been channeled into by The Seductive but Dangerous Machines. Good old (new, actually) knobs and faders with the right mapping enabling less mousing, menus, pages etc, is what I'm working towards. Having started recording back in the tape/console era, the process was more intuitive, more fun. Inline with that I'm also trying to close my eyes more while playing.
You mentioned my little percussion habit! If I ever have a hat, tambourine, or cabasa doing something that's not a straight up every second 1/8th open hi hat, I usually pan them a bit, but only about half way left or right. I don't like them hard panned. With electronic music, particularly techno/house beats, it's really tempting to make it sit up the middle, but you're really missing out if you don't do some panning.
"Moving through combinaisons of sound" is the most interesting tip i learned to preserve my "hear fatigue" and my objectivity. This channel is pure gold.
Im so grateful for these videos. You have literally just changed my world.
Greg, you remind me of a very smart acquaintance of mine. Haven't seen him since we've studied physics together, but I sense the same energy from you. He also went through the INTJ to INFP transition. An engineer's mindset complemented by the soul of a philosopher. Keep those videos coming, man! Great insights and impeccable delivery!

One thing I love about being in a home studio is the atmosphere, the dim light, the sight of a condenser microphone and orange Vu meters...when I'm not there I listen to Kush because it takes me right back there. if ever you stop engineering music (and that would be a waste), you have a career as a night radio host... thanks for all the brilliant, soothing and incredibly instructional videos 👍
Being an autodidact in every aspect of music, I find this input extremely helpful!
am i the only one that re watches his videos 2 or 3 or more times to take in all this beautiful information
So weird, i was just thinking yesterday about this topic, while relistening to some past mixes and found my songs where ''too consistent'' and thought of doing mixes that would ''breath'' more :-) i think LCR is a great base and then adding elements on different sides without ''overshadowing'' the LCR mix. Thanks for the tips, KUSH TIME. ;-)
Creative thinking, I like it!

It's never too late!
Heck, yeah, fresh ideas. I love your channel, thank you so much!!
Never even thought about it. Thanks.
Im definitely one of those intermediate level mixers that have plateaued. Im very out of practice though. Years ago i had a huge set up and everything sounded great and i never had problems getting things to sound good, but i ended up loosing everything and moved back home. I didnt have a computer or any equipment for about 3 years. I now have enough for what i personally need to create, but im having a really hard time mic'ing my guitar amps. It just doesnt sound right no matter where i place the mics. Im thinking it probably has to do with amp placement in my room and the room itself. My mic collection is pretty limited too. A sm-57, e609, akg p170, rode m3, and a rode nt1-a and i only have a 2 channel interface at the moment. Its hard getting a natural sounding recording of a stereo amp set up with 2 direct mics in a non treated room that very reflective.
I feel you. If it's any consolation, I think that process of 'losing it all, sliding backwards, and clawing your way back' is possibly unavoidable, but definitely invaluable. Your instinct about your room is probably right, because room is *everything* when it comes to guitar amps and acoustic instruments in general.
Try this: record a verse and chorus of squeaky clean DI guitar with the intent to reamp, then feed that to your amp on an endless looping playback. Shove a foam earplug in one ear as deep as it'll go, so you're as deaf as possible in that ear. Then point your open ear towards the amp in a position roughly near where you place a mic, and dial your tone controls and gain. Then move your ear around until you hear something that sounds like a solid tone.
If nothing sounds good, you need to move the amp around. Definitely get it up off the floor, sit it on a chair, amps hate floors in small rooms. When you find a spot where it sounds good to your one ear, put your mic right there. Or put all the mics there. Record. Analyze playback in the context of the mix, suss out which mic(s) like your amp/room combo, maybe spend a few more passes fine tuning the mic position(s) and tone control/gain setup, then go with that.
It might not sound as good as your old setup, but it might, and either way it'll likely be the best it can be for that setup, which is all you can ask for. And over time, as you can, add DIY broadband absorption and diffusion. Keep the faith, do your best, and play the long game, you'll get there man, time and patience solve most problems!
The House of Kush thank you so much for all the tips and advice!! I definitely need to get my amps off the floor, especially since they are sitting on top of tile at the moment. There is an area rug in from of them, so its not as bad as it could be. Im going to invest in some actual amp stands to get them off the floor. My room isnt that small but its a untreated basement level apartment with tile floors and non symmetrical walls and ceilings that are very reflective and uneven. Any type of treatment would be a huge improvement. I really like your advice with plugging up one ear. It makes a ton of sense, but i never thought of that before. Definitely blew my mind with that concept. Im going to give that try. Thank you so much!!
I find working with single speakers is usually the best for recording. 4x12 and 2x12 always seems to have ever so slight bleed from the other cones and creates phasing issues.
This is how you have a one-on-one talk with the whole world.
I find mixing just as important as the recording. I close my eyes and try to mix without seeing the volume on the screen. The idea is that I try to avoid mixing with my eyes. That's my only strategy I know makes sense to me. I am slowly getting less bad at it. I feel it's like driving. The more you drive the better you learn to observe the environment.
Loving this channel. Pretty please lock the focus on your camera or limit the autofocus range. 🙏
Ha! Thanks, and I agree, I'm working on it (been tweaking sound for 25 years but videography is brand new). I think the latest episodes (Mixes have Three Dimensions, Mixing Too Slow) are a lot smoother. If you've got any tips for improving it on a Lumix GX85 PLEASE share, I'm always down to improve my game! :-)
@@TheHouseofKushTV Just go to manual settings / focus. Set it + exposure and then I think that's it.
2:38 I don't think it mutes the other side. It just puts everything on the side you want so you'll be hearing both sides collapsed in one side (like a mono signal but all the way to the side). Again I think this is what it does, If I'm wrong please teach me and save your bad words.
If you've got an actual 'stereo panner' on the channel then yes, it will do as you say. But most DAW's actually have a 'stereo balancer' on the channel, in which case it does as I've demonstrated. Some DAW's allow you to choose which behavior the stereo pan knobs have :-)
An interesting aspect of point two, is sometimes discovering an instrument that was just clogging up the mix. Completely removing that instrument is often key. Maybe bring it back in the chorus or...never. Often times what a mix needs is not more, but less.
Arrangement is king!
Im hooked this is great stuff!
can i just say that i'd rather watch this guy explain everything than 100% of the other popular youtubers from the industry. I'm just so sick of the many jaded, pompous, egotistical assholes who are just above it all but make no interesting music themselves, every solution sums up to "be rich and have my ears", lording over every gearslutz thread with pretentious opinions, shooting amateurs down for not affording the 5 figure options but end everything with :) .
So true
greg's got matthew mcconaughey vibes
Not even, man...Greg has straight-up young Iggy Pop vibes, from the look to the self-confidence to the ‘too smart for his own good’ bit. Like Iggy, but without the self-destructive streak and obsession with literal stupidity.
Then again, Greg exudes competence, chill, ease, and generosity-none of which were obvious Iggy qualities until Iggy got into his mid-50s, etc.
