Toe the mark means go along, do the expected. He was an outlaw, would not bow down [toe the line) to the country music hierarchy.
Outlaw country is the best country
fact.
Damn sure is!!! And always will be.
Facts
If it ain't outlaw, it ain't country
It is a mandolin.
What a sound!!!!!
Waylon Jennings has some great songs. Was one of the bad boys of country music.
Outlaw S*it says it all. lol I love the original version
Waylon is considered the father of outlaw country. The reason is he was the FIRST country artist in Nashville that told the producers that he refused to record another song for the label unless he could choose the music and have final say in the sound he wanted. You said it right. He’s the boss. Look that up.
result was first platinum album county had seen, i believe.
Hank Sr was the original outlaw. It's why he was kicked out of the Grand Ole Opry.
Yes New York lawyer Neil Reshen came to him when he had hepatitis and Chet Akins wouldn’t give him and money. So Neil went and Waylon said they would walk. And Chet gave in.
Struggle Jennings is the grandson of Waylon’s wife, Jessi Colter. His real name is William Curtis Harness, Jr. He borrowed the Jennings name for obvious reasons. Waylon passed away in 2002 due to complications from diabetes. Waylon was the Bass player for Buddy Holly and gave his seat on the plane that crashed, killing Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson(Big Bopper) to Richardson.
How interesting. I'll have to look up Holly's musicians.
@ He wasn’t Holly’s original bassist. I’m not sure what happened to him. Waylon and Buddy were friends prior to Waylon joining the Crickets
It's a little deeper than that. Waylon raised Jennifer (Struggle's Mom) & was a father figure to Struggle after his own father was killed when Struggle was 10. He was a constant in Struggle's life right up until he passed away. In my mind, that makes him Paw-Paw 🤷

LEGEND!!!!!!!
Waylon did it his way but I am so thankful he did.
AMEN to that
The video hasn't even started and I gave it a thumbs up. I just love Waylon
That instrument that you were questioning is a mandolin which is a country staple.
Waylon one of the original outlaws.... he's one of my faves
One of my favorites. Toe the mark means to split the soil (toe) in the line (mark) to plant the crops. Basically follow the set path.
"Toe the mark" is an idiom that means to meet a standard, follow rules, or abide by doctrines.
a slight modification of "toe the line"
I think it's the opposite of Johnny Cash's I Walk The Line.
Hey Krizz, Waylon is a legend , the little guitar is a Mandolin . Love your channel man, you’re a great reactor. Love and blessings to you .❤️🤗Waylon passed Feb,13,2002
Oh I love me some Waylon all of his stuff. Thanks for this great reaction.please do more of him ❤❤
Waylon is Struggles step-grandfather. Waylon was Johnny Cash's best friend and this song is kind of a response to Johnny's I Walk the Line.
Bro I been listening to you for years. You are actually one of my favorite artists and you are from my area.
Saw him live in Dallas.
He had just had surgery in Arizona but true showman came and performed.
They carried him on stage and set him in his chair.
He played and sang and joked and told stories, put his finger to his nose for the Willie parts.
Then they carried him off stage.
Pure Greatness.
Thanks for bringing Waylon out
Waylon passed in 2003 RIP
I hate to correct you, but it was February 13, 2002.
@waylonrules1981 Yes, you're correct! He died in 2002. He was 64yrs
Waaay too young!! 😢💔
A day I will never forget.
I worked with a really interesting woman a while back who went on the road with Waylon as his handler.
She was one of the people who got him to performances as best they could given that he didn't toe the mark or walk the line. 😂
She was great to work with, reliable, and shared entertaining stories about Waylon, Willie, Kris, and Johnny!
I bet she had some great stories! Awesome job to have, but I’m sure she earned every penny handling Waylon. Man, I miss him, Johnny, and now Kris💔
@leannmiller7153
I'm still grieving Kris. He's always been my favorite outlaw. I wore out my copy of Silver Tongue Devil as a teen.
Waylon 🔥❤️
Waylon's Waymore Blues 🔥hope you will react to more Waylon Jennings
Yessss, my favorite Waylon song!!
I grew up old school country. Waylon is one of my absolute favorites. RiP
Waylin has the best voice! Comes from the gut🥰
RIP Waylon Jennings! He was one of the best country artists. Love all country, but he was awesome..
Waylon Jennings was the man!
Oh I love me some Waylon. My cousins grew up near where he was born and raised in Littlefield Texas. When we went out to one of the family weddings I got to meet his Brother and he sang for me sounded just like Waylon. The gas station that his dad owned his brother turned it into a Beer Barn , inside the building is a small museum of Waylon Growing up. Struggle is his granson with his wife Jessi Colter she also sang with Waylon. Stevie Nicks wrote a song for them called Leather and Lace which she never gave to them due to them breaking up.
That's a mandolin. A staple of country music, especially bluegrass. RIP Watasha.
Man I have been listening to you for a very long time and seen you live many times. I love seeing you branch off and make your own name for yourself and do things you wanna do! much respect! keep it coming!
Love me some Waylon now ya hear 🧡🤘
Legend of my childhood.
Toe as in "Tow" keep up with; "the mark" expectations, etc. Thank you for your reaction to Waylon Jennings and to this song. Congrats on your UA-cam growth and success!
In this case it is "Toe". As in, get your toes on the line.
@@BlackSmokeDMax Meeting expectation. I just described it differently. Same meaning of the phrase, yes?
@ very similar
Mandolin. I had front row seats to see Waylon in Spokane, Washington in 1982. Great show!
My brother was in a band in Taiwan with Bobby Langraf back in high school. Bobby now is a very successful guitar tech .... stories abound.
More Waylon, Shooter and Struggle please!!!!
Check out "I've always been crazy" by Waylon. It's my favorite Waylon
Mama's don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys with Willie Nelson next please 🙏. My Dad was a huge country fan and my Mom classic rock so I grew up with the best of two worlds. Great reaction and Peace out Krizz and Congrats on the channel growth 👏
RIP Waylon Arnold Jennings was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. He is considered one of the pioneers of the outlaw movement in country music. Jennings started playing guitar at age eight and performed at fourteen on KVOW radio, after which he formed his first band, the Texas Longhorns. Wikipedia
Born: 15 June 1937, Littlefield, Texas, United States
Died: 13 February 2002 (age 64 years), Arizona, United States
Grandchild: Alabama Gypsy Rose Jennings
Song writing partners: Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter ·
Awards: Country Music Association Award for Album of the Year ·
Nominations: Country Music Association Award for Album of the Year . Peace out.
Waylon Jennings started as a rock n roll guy in the late 50's and was the guy who gave his seat up to the Big Bopper in the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens . at the time Waylon was Buddy Hollys bass player. as a country singer in the late 60's and early 70's He helped START the Outlaw Country movement. he was also the singer and balladeer for the tv show The Dukes Of Hazzard. he sadly passed away in 2002. as a suggestion as far as Waylon goes i suggest his song Did Hank really Do It This way especially an older live version cause there is a line in the older versions he stopped using later on in his career
Made his own song on the spirit of "Walk the Line," a Johnny Cash song, paying homage to Johnny throughout the song, one of many reasons why the Outlaws played so well together, except DAC.
What’s the story with David Allen Coe?
Please do more Waylon!!! ✌️❤️🎸
Waylon is my GOAT
Waylon is #1 in my book
Man, you're really going to dig this dive!
Waylons son shooter Jennings sings, Waylons one of my fave singers, love the reaction and love the channel man

Grandma Shirley loves this❤
Waylon... Hardline
I am my daddy’s baby girl!! He loved loved this song! I have all of his things… records omg!! You’d love!!❤️Tennessee
Marty Robbins is one of the country's best storytellers. This is one of my favorites.
Masters call
Waylon was the man... This is true Outlaw country. Check out Waymore's blues sitting on the couch with his wife... Gangster
The “baby guitar” is called a mandolin great sounding instrument one of my favorites
Outlaw county was the beginning of gangsters music. Murder robbery drinking gambling women and drugs. The downfall of man hahahaha
My favorite outlaw...
❤ Great reaction.
Mandolin is the instrument in question Krizz; it's related to the lute I believe. Waylon was the bass player for Buddy Holly's band. He gave up his seat to the Big Bopper who was ill on that fatal flight and rode the cold drafty bus to the next gig. It haunted him his till dying day in February 2002. Diabetes got the best of him and left Jessi Colter a widow. Shooter was one of Waylon's sons. He also had one called Waylon. There is more if you want to sort it out in his bio.
Woah over 500 a day...love seeing the growth for ya ✌
Enjoy the lyrics too haha that heart line... can't beat it 🧡lol
I gotta say. My favorite song by Waylon is, I Never Thought I'd ever be an Outlaw. It was never released for play on the radio. However, it was featured on a film called Uphill all the Way. I would love to see you do a reaction to this.
Mandolin! My friend!
SO many good songs by Waylon. Grew up listening to this guy. Check out "Good Hearted Woman" or "Luckenbach, Texas."
I've always been crazy next!!!!
Waylon walked out of the recording of "We are the world" when Michael Jackson wanted all of them to sing a verse in Sawhili. Waylon walked out. Look it up
Just caught you with Black P! Enjoyed your reaction to the Boxer with Simon and Garfunkel. What I especially appreciated was your explanation of “sampling “ or as some may call it “ covers “ . You’re so right. We need accept the fact that great music follows great music. If it is Elvis covering Big Mama Thornton’s“ Hound Dog “ or Whitney Houston’s I’ll always love you cover of Dolly Parton . Each made it their own. Maybe I dismissed hip hop too soon . Recommend something you think an old white guy might appreciate. By the way I am a big fan of Black Pegasus. Love his reactions
Toe the mark was originally a boxing term. In the barns and bars across America in the 1800s, you would draw two lines parallel. The boxers would step up to the line, or toe the mark, and barenuckle box.
Struggle is technically the grandson of Dewayne Eddy, a legendary guitar player & Jessi Colter, a famous country singer. Jessi married Waylon when Struggle's Mom (Jennifer) was very young so Waylon raised her. She was later a backup singer in his band.
Struggle's father was killed when Struggle was 10. Waylon stepped in & helped to raise Struggle. They were very close right up until Waylon passed away in 2002
I saw you on BP and tuned in.
Uke is much smaller. That is a Mandolin. Ck out Bruce Hornsby and the Range .. "Mandolin Rain" 🎧
The instrument is called a Mandolin. Very common in country and bluegrass music.
Ain't living long like this by Waylon is TOTALLY outlaw country.
Waylon Jennings was the G.O.AT.
That was a mandolin that Waylon was playing.
Duuude! You MUST check out Waylon Jennings, "where corn don't grow"
"Walk the line" is a reference to Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line". "Toe the Mark" means more or less to follow the rules.
Starting this comment as the video marks - my understanding of the saying that is the title of the song (Never could toe the mark,) is basically along the lines of saying couldn't conform or fit in. Which very much fits in with Waylon Jennings and his Outlaw Country. Couldn't fit in with what people wanted Country to be when he started his career, so he and his friends started Outlaw Country. Like the Futuram Quote (I know someone is thinking it ;) ) They grabbed Blackjack and Hookers and started their own genre of Country music.
Just finished the video, Awesome song and video by Waylon and great reaction Krizz Kaliko.
Southern Comfort was the name of Waylon and Jessi’s home! Waylon was the very Best. Waylon died 2/13/ 2002 from diabetes.❤
How does "urban country " sound? 😎 That's what I call myself. 🤘Rock on, Kelly 🤘
My favorite Waylon song... are you sure Hank did it this way.... Techni9e.... little pills
Mandolin.
Just in case you didn’t know he’s man that you never see doing the theme song for The Dukes of Hazzard, he also narrated the show.
Dukes of Hazzard theme song!
“Walk the Line” is about being faithful to one woman.
Miss Jessie might disagree about whether or not he had to walk the line. Hahaha.
I’d have left it all for Waylon in those days. What an outlaw!
STRUGGLE JENNINGS: Outlaw Shit (ft. Yelawolf)
WAYLON JENNINGS: Outlaw Shit
is an ABSOLUTE classic! 🎸
Waylon was a bad a## for sure. Just an outlaw through and through.
It is Mandolin
That in between country and city is suburbs.
'Toe the mark' and 'Walk the line', here both essentially mean living by someone else's rules. He is asserting his personal sovereignty in a relationship.
FYI about Waylon he was supposed to be on the plane that buddy holly died in but gave his spot to Ricky valens because he wanted to get home after being in tour.
Mandolin is what he was playing for a minute
***I'VE ALWAYS BEEN CRAZY***, ***GOOD HEARTED WOMAN***, ***DON'T YOU THINK THIS OUTLAW BIT DONE GOT OUT OF HAND***, ***GOOD OLE BOYS***.... gold mine of likes/subs....he is at the top!
Just FYI. Waylon got the Outlaw title not by being arrested. But by challenging the mainstream record companies. Waylon was the first country artist to demand his record recordings be his way, and only his way. If not he wouldn’t do them. He paved the way for all the other country artists:
How Waylon Jennings challenged the music business:
- Music style
Waylon Rejected polished production and commercial constraints in favor of a rawer sound and more authentic lyrical content
- Recording rights
Waylon Fought for and won the right to record the material he wanted, in the studio he wanted, and with the musicians he wanted to use
- Awards consideration
Controversially asked the CMA to remove Waylon from awards consideration, maintaining that music should not be a competitive sport
- Arena and stadium performances
Waylon was the first country act to play arenas and stadiums
You need to check out Whey Jennings, Waylon’s blood grandson who used to travel on the road with Waylon from a young age, like from 2 yoa. Check out Whey’s -Just Before The Dawn, The Gun, Lead Me Home, If It Wasn’t For The Sinnin’, One Together, One Folded, Sleeves, One Of These Days, 10 Day Run, and Jekyl & Hyde.
Need to listen to Rainy Day Woman
Guitar tech: The guy who gets in trouble for any guitar related problem whether its their fault or not..
TOE THE MARK means step up to fight or battle, toe the line means do what right and expected. So he ain't gonna fight you, and he ain't gonna follow your rules.
Luckenbach Texas with Willie and Bob Wills is still the King are 2 musts
When he says he loves Southern Comfort he is not talking about the drink, it is the name of his property where he lives.
You need to hear Waylon's son Shooter Jennings and his song Outlaw You. Straight up diss track aimed at today's Nashville music scene and also gives a history lesson on how Nashville tried to keep Waylon out of Nashville and how he fought them and won
