RIP Uncle Tat, the Golden Leg and coach of the Shaolin team. Your chemistry with Stephen Chow always bring humour to me when I was a kid watching some of Stephen Chow movies.
This is something Hollywood still can't make a movie with a storyline and character development like the old-school Stephen Chow movie can. It's a timeless action comedy with a blend of romance. Always made me chuckle every time I watched it.
Not enough people is talking about how this movie was very ahead of its time in terms of football tactics, your offense really starts from the goalkeeper
That is what Pep Guardiola thinks, up to now it didn't bring him so many CL after his experience in the strongest Barcelona of all time. In last CL final Ancelotti had a GK that parried instead of doing 10.000 passes per game, and that paid out. :)
@@putin2918 no it really isn't....it just seems like it's the pinnacle because Hollywood has a monopoly on movies that get shown internationally but for the most part all of the films showcased at the Oscars are all American and there are perhaps one or two Foreign films, but there are film awards all over the world and Stephen Chow has won numerous awards in Asia for his movies, same as Jackie Chan, the reason Jackie wanted an Oscar so badly though was because he made films in America and didn't get any recognition for them at all, the Rush Hour movies, The Protector, Cannonball Run, Rumble in the Bronx, the Big Brawl were all Jackie's attempts at trying to break into the American film industry....unlike Jackie and Jet Li that actually made a few films for Western audiences, Stephen Chow has never attempted to appeal to the West with his films, his films are mostly targeted at an Asian audience, they just so happen to be distributed to the West and become popular among Western audiences because they're so good, so he doesn't need to strive for an Oscar when he's won awards already in China
Stephen Chow does live action anime before anyone else, Shaolin soccer, Kung-fu Hustle, that being said, even himself cannot surpass his own success, these two movies is just gold.
which is very unfortunate. his latter movies were cringe af. a lot of it was due to shitty acting from much worse actors who wayyyy exaggerate their act in a poor imitation of stephen chow's style of humour. but i still think the main issue lies within the script. far too bland, and the jokes come abruptly, without any precursor/build up, ruining any punchline effect.
I recently rewatch Shaolin Soccer and Kungfu Hustle, its ridiculous how those two movies hold up through time, and still packing a lot of entertainment, a lot of subtle writing, like how the keeper grip dent the bar etc...
The translations here are absolute garbage. Same on the DVD/Blu-rays. Makes me want to write better translations for this and Kung Fu Hustle.... For some reason, HK movies always have such terrible english translations, and it's really a shame.
