Using a DI to Record Guitar Tracks

- In this video I show you how I record a DI track alongside my amp track when recording guitars.
The DI featured in this video is the Z Tone DI from IK Multimedia
Thanks to IK Multimedia and Guitar World for making this video possible.

That last version sounded right out of the 80s, that was awesome. I just heard "DI track" for the first time and had to look it up. I'm almost wondering why no one's done this before in the audio engineering history, it seems almost a given, but it never even occurred to me. smart thing to do.
Thanks for all the great info Richie! I'm just now getting back into the home recording thing and your tutorials are a huge help.
This is a great tutorial, and a method that I somewhat stumbled onto myself via trial and error. The ability to have the DI track to play with saves a lot of hassle down the line ... especially when you can't get the artist back in the room to redo a track... thnx Richie!

fantastic explanation Ritchie, thanks !
This is probably the best and most useful explanation on UA-cam of how re-amping works and why you'd use it. I think the Z Tone and AXE I/O interfaces are particularly useful for guitarists - giving a bunch of options to shape your sound when recording
I really enjoy your videos - they're informative and entertaining at the same time. The passion for the music comes across in your delivery. Keep up the great work and G'Day from Down Under..! 🎸🦘🙏
Always valuable content/insight! Thanks Richie! (BTW, your Bandgeek YES songs are just phenomenal!)
Great tutorial Richie! Thanks!
Good stuff Rich. Love the Tele.
That Z Tone is insane! Sounds great
It sounds great with that plugin. It’s a good thing you used a DI!!
always top notch education and playing
Great sound, love that BOC helix tone. I really need to learn native on my recording software. Awesome tip learned some great info.
Great Tips!!
I know it's comparing a processed tone to a raw recording, but it's the first time I've heard a virtual amp sound times better than a physical one. Great hand. Love those bends and vibratos.
I just got AXE O/I ... and it comes with Z-Tone option. It sounds just amazing.
Thanks for that as I just started with a DAW a couple of months ago and I'm just getting to recording.
Very informative!!!!
Thank you man. This is what I've been looking for. You really helped me and a lot of other people I'm sure. Maybe you can show how to re-amp using amps. Thank you.
Good info.
Hey Richie I'm a big fan from the UK, openly sharing your great vids when possible, but i would love for you to tackle some early Genesis, Gabriel era, Suppers ready, etc, keep up the great work.
you are amazing
Thanks 👍
still miss alot of the bank geek vids Great job richie
Coming very soon.
@@RichieCastellano Great
Great info! I just recorded two rhythm tracks the same way one track di and the other with the amp my question is when mixing both tracks will there be any phase issues . Thanks for your time. 😎
Hey Richie... that version of Billy Joel’s Presser was amazing... i would love a version to watch on youtube... are you going to upload ur live stream from sunday soon?
Hi Richie, great job as always! Think I'll grab the Z-Tone myself. Question: what is the controller you are using on your desk? Thanks.
Thanks for posting this video. I've just bought one after watching it a couple of times. Out of interest, is the Telecaster in butterscotch, or is it yellow? Pierre Shepard
So the Z-Tone control and jfet/pure switch affects the linked output to the amp as well? Will this help negate the impedance loading of the DI to the amp? That's the issue I'm having with my J48 DI, 220k ohm is loading down the amp input.
What's the optimal DI level to record at? What should the ceiling be?
Hey what's THAT DAW controller?HUGE!
yeah, what is that funky controller, midi ?
👍
Richie; You had me busy with this video. I was trying to see the plugin you used and to learn more about the Helix products that sound so good. And I saw one of your other videos where you got the Helix Pad unit in 2016. I signed up for Line 6 and got the trial Native Helix plugin that I'm using in Studio One. And thankfully you had many presets you offered at the Line 6 site. But the 4 I was looking for that are in this video, such as Lead and Grit are only Pad type presets and not the Native type presets. Is there any way you can upload those 4 to that area of Line 6? I think they were Lead, Grit, Chorus, and one other. The 4 you see in this video that are BOC presets. For others reading this, the Native Helix plugin is $399 unless you own a pedal that is registered and you can get it for $99. The Helix LT pedal is around $600 new.
I figured this wouldn't go anywhere and I'm on a 15 day trial and I have 12 days left. So I took the PGP Lead plugin type from the Line 6 site along with visually figuring out from the video, which effect types by the symbol shape and color, in the major theme, are picked for that preset and manually created a User preset.
I opened the PGP file in Notepad and compared the values and sub-names for each effect and the settings. And I was able to configure each one of the effects for the proper sub-type and values that are scattered throughout the thankfully small file. Glad I didn't have to scour through 1000 lines of code. Once completed I could export the saved preset to an HLX file and open that in Notepad, again a not to complex set of data, and double check the values to the PGP file.
More than one way to skin a cat.
btw, I was thinking. although you would lose the gain feature and ground feature, you could record through the audiobox and with the plugin and make a track. And then temporarily, remove the plugin and play it back through the effect and amp and record that with the mic and amp and effect. If you don't have the $150 for the DI box.
AKA reamping
@@LoveGuitar63277 Yup, without the use of the DI box
Jeffrey Cranston what r you referring to by “audio box”?
@@LoveGuitar63277 Richie starts off speaking about the DI box and then says how the output, with an XLR cable, is plugged into an Audiobox made by MOTU (and I have one of those by Presonus) except the MOTU has a USB-C output vs standard USB. And the MOTU is then plugged into the PC.
That's why I'm saying you can plug your guitar into the MOTU box and record to ProTools directly. Then you can use the MOTU to playback from the recording to the effects for the guitar and play the track through the amp, Mic it and record it as the second track. Yes it's simpler to have the DI box and do the two tracks simultaneously if you have the bucks. The MOTU is about $170 and the DI about $150. The Presonus box was about $99, but you will have a bit more latency.

Ill try my strobostomp with xlr out to my scarlet to mac.
what is the plug in you,r using on di track?
What is that plugin he is using?
When recording through your Helix and using the Amp modeling, do you record using the Digital output, Line out or XLR out?
On the rack I use the 1/4 inch pass through usually. If I use the floor, I’ll use a DI like this.
@@RichieCastellano Thanks
Do you think there is a big difference in the DI track coming from the Z-Tone, compared to a DI track that would come from the Helix floor if you'd recorded with that (processed signal and DI signal recorded at the same time through Helix).
I don’t understand the question. The Helix Floor doesn’t have a DI out. The Helix rack does have one, but it doesn’t sound as good as this DI.
@@RichieCastellano Thnx for the fast reply! On the Helix Floor you can record via USB and record the processed signal and a DI signal simultaneously. But the quality won't be as good as the (or a) DI box i presume

Imma give this a try. Thanks @richiecastellano
Rolls Royce DI box.
