- Overall I spend less money per day travelling than I do living full time in Toronto! If you're curious of what my budget is on an average day in South East Asia, check out this video of when I first arrived to Ho Chi Minh (formerly known as Saigon). This is a beautiful and vibrant city and I would highly recommend spending at least 3-4 days here when you are visiting Vietnam. I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. It's still Saigon to me and my family 😉. One of the great things about Saigon is that if you want a great banh mi, Vietnamese coffee, or just about anything else, the street food scene is fantastic and you don't necessarily have to burn time at the 'popular' places. One of the most memorable and delicious meals of my life was at a little stall in the Ben Thanh market.

Saigon is always beautiful but the Ben Thanh market itself is full of scams. Ben Thanh market is well known as rip off place for tourists, shop owners even food stall scam like hell. My cousins who used to Iive near Ben Thanh, said to stay away from the Ben Thanh market. Just walk around to explore things but don't buy nothing from the Ben Thanh market.

Nice video, Alina, which really gives a feel of the city. I think Vietnam is one of the most interesting countries in the world to visit. It’s good if possible to travel right from Ho Chi Minh in the South to Hanoi in the north, making at least part of the journey by the Reunification Railway which connects the two cities. When in Ho Chi Minh I enjoyed a trip to the Mekong Delta which is fairly close by (I did a cycling trip there). Vietnam is a fairly safe country to travel in, but there are a few scams. Be careful of the taxis - only use the larger well known companies.

Great video, Alina. I was in Saigon 5 months ago, just for 3 days because we were in a 2-weeks trip from Saigon to Hanoi via Hue, Hoi an Ninh Binh and Halong Bay. 3 days to visit Saigon is not enough to see all the things I want to see. I think I will go back next year.

I agree - the War Remnants Museum is a must-visit! I visited Vietnam ten years ago and I've now been to more than 20 countries and visited countless museums. Yet, the War Remnants remains high on my list of the best museums I've been to. It's the only museum where I got emotional. Enjoy Ho Chi Minh, Alina! Yes definitely agree. This museum and the Holocaust Museum in Berlin really were difficult but important to see.
Ho Chi Minh was ranked among the top mass murderers of 20th century, just behind Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and ahead of Pol-Pot, all Commies. His deadly land-reform (1953-1956) alone slaughtered nearly 1 million North Vietnamese farmers to steal their lands and homes. The real Ho Chi Minh aka Nguyen Ai Quoc died in Hong Kong in 1932. The latter Ho was Ho Quang, aka Hu Kwan, was actually a Commie Chinese Colonel from China. This fact was even admitted by China's newspapers. Do your research. Truth!

Many war refugees escaped by boats to pulau bidong Malaysia. I was old enough to remember. So I was not surprised when I met a pharmacist who came from unhcr pulau bidong when I was in canada long ago
I saw an episode of The Price Is Right ✅️ .. last week where the showcase prize was a one week trip to Vietnam 🇻🇳 . It was surprising but a good sign of healing that 🇺🇸 tourists are welcomed , indeed encouraged to visit. Wonderful country that was exploited for so long.

The only correction I would make to the history is that the US did not get into the war to back the French colonial holding. The US, after WWII, was actually instrumental in getting Western powers to give up their colonies, including huge pressure on the British. The reason the US got into Vietnam was to oppose the spread of Russian/Chinese backed communism is SE Asia.
But basically the US supported France and those who betrayed the country of Vietnam, the US used the force that France had created during the colonial period. Ho Chi Minh went to the US and asked the US to help Vietnam gain independence. The US refused because its ally France did not agree. Ho Chi Minh had no choice but to choose Soviet and China. But he had doctrines against communism. If you go to Vietnam today, you will find that Vietnam is only 10% communist. Vietnam chooses the best of both regimes to develop the country.

Most statistics, like that one, are made up. Since WWII, the US has been protecting most of the world's free population. That included helping the South Koreans from North Korean communists, and trying to help the South Vietnamese, which ultimately failed.

Thanks for your video. I visited Vietnam in 2019 I didn't really have a budget because it's so cheap overall in Vietnam but I did take notice of my spending when I looked into it when I came back to America and saw on average I would spend anywhere from U.S. $40 - $50 dollars on the lower end per day mainly because it's pouring rain and I would just eat at the local street food within the homestay I was staying at I didn't have to spend too much during those days. When I'm out exploring and visiting places I can spend upwards of U.S. $60 - $100 including going out and enjoying the night life. I have friends who live and work in Saigon so many of my nights was consisting of eating, drinking, date nights, occasional smoking and partying. I had a great time visiting Vietnam will be back soon.

I will tell you of what I experienced of the Vietnam War. Our father never kept us, his children, from seeing war scenes on TV. ( he worked for a consumer product company so he got TV's at a big discount) It was vivid but both the N Vietnamese and the S Vietnamese committed atrocities against each other. The USA added more atrocities on top of theirs. The war ended about 3 years before my high school graduation and 18th birthday. They announced it over the loud speaker and the whole school during class change erupted into a huge cheer. My swimming instructor volunteered rather than getting drafted and years later I found out that he disappeared after going to Vietnam. His body or information on him never surfaced. It was liked he just evaporated. ( MIA) Others returned in a box to their families. I met others a few years later while attending college only to find extremely confused and disoriented individuals. It is a war that still leaves me confused and questioning my government's actions today. The only thing that crosses my mind is that the Chinese have also dominated the Vietnamese and the two have never gotten along. Sooner or later the N Vietnamese were going to want to expel them from their society. Could we have assisted in this, which the USA government somewhat currently doing, in exchange for them not sending many in South Vietnam to re-education camps ( for death and or torture) & a more tolerant society? It is historically true that radical political regimes eventually moderate and disappear. Perhaps one government could moderate the harshness out of such a process in another government? It also enforces my belief of tolerance that exists or used to exist in N America. A belief that it is best not force another person to conform to my belief but to consider and work with others that are in disagreement with my own barring the surrending of key moral values. One should strive to bend like bamboo but not totally topple or break when it comes to morality.
That is very sad. I hope the world can finally learn how to prevent this sort of escalation from happening.

As Canadian Alina , how do you compare Viet food in Vietnam to Vancouver and Toronto's food scene in Canada? Personally I found it lot more diverse than stuff I see in Canada, like usual stuff such as Pho, spring rolls and such..I thought I knew Vietnamese food as born Immigrant who escape as Vietnam war refugee when I was young. But when I came back , its totally lot more than I think I knew. Each city and regions have different variations of the same popular dishes that I already knew , if you have time try them all out. You can rent a nice hotel suite with a view of Da Nang beach for as little as $350 CDN per month. Food and transportation are cheap. You can easily live on $50/day CDN. The biggest expense is getting there and back - at least $3,500 CDN to/from most Canadian airports.

A really interesting video which tells me Alina Mcleod is definitely fueled by food. I don't think I could have eaten half of your daily repast but I'd also be lucky to do a quarter of your daily exercise. I have had friends who lived in South East Asia for a decade and a half. They always told me that one of their favourite countries to visit was Vietnam. They often brought friends from Canada and Europe there for a week or two. As one of those who use Canadian - nobody uses Canadian dollars as you switched to US dollars for expense conversion. However, in the end you redeemed yourself by also giving total in Canadian dollars, thereby keeping the natural inferiority complex at bay. Looking forward to more of your Vietnamese content.

Yes, Hiroshima is an important place to visit. I went there about 15 years ago but would love to visit again.
They have a new exhibition/museum there with a room with an impressive wall high 360 degree black and white image of the devastation.

In 1969 when I was on the outskirts of Saigon, I had real cheap housing, it was called a foxhole.
I haven't been back to Vietnam since I left the country 30 something years ago, but I would like to visit one day. One thing I am very keen is to eat food which is so cheap when you compare to the West. I hope I can build a strong stomach to eat at the locals, not in a fancy restaurant or a chain restaurant. In Ho Chi Minh City you can take a walk on Hoang Sa Street, it is a road that follows the river, there is a very beautiful park. Next to Dien Bien Phu bridge, there are 2 very ancient and beautiful pagodas next to the river. In addition, you can visit the Saigon River by hydrofoil boat from Bach Dang Wharf to Cu Chi district, where there is a tunnel with a length of about 250km underground...
