  • Hanoi is a stop you can't miss when visiting Vietnam. It is the countries capital city and filled to the brim with history, culture, delicious food and the nicest people. Join me and my Dad as we visit some of the top attractions of the city, as well as get a more inside look into how the average person lives here. Oh and of course we had to try the famous restaurant that Anthony Bourdain and Obama went to in Parts Unknown during his Vietnam series. Hope you enjoy it! xx

    When I visited Hanoi 25 years ago, I remember thinking how charming it was - very different from what I expected. On the drive from the airport to city, there were lots of old Colonial French buildings with wrought iron balconies. My favorite area was around West Lake. And crossing the street anywhere in Vietnam was always an adventure!

    FYI the royal citadel of Hanoi was not built by the chinese but by king Ly Thai To at the beginning of the 11th century . He was the one who moved in 1010 the capital from Hoa Lu - NInh Binh to Dai La which used to be only a small fortress under the chinese rule . The kingdom of Dai Viet ( former name of Vietnam ) was already independent of china since 939 . The price of the land in the Old Quarter is artificially inflated by the real estate investors . My cousins used to own 2 semi-detached houses on Hang Trong street ( the Drums street ) , but they sold them 6 years ago to buy 4 much more modern and spacious detached houses outside that dirty ghetto plus a nice condo in HCMC with the money they got . They are now very happy with their new places . For them it was a good decision

    • @nocancelcultureaccepted9316
      @nocancelcultureaccepted9316 Рік тому

      Vietnam could be better if the people stopped throwing trash everywhere. I guess throwing garbage everywhere runs deep in the blood from one generation to the next, right? Because the Vietnamese overseas have the same slum mindset; littering everywhere they exist.

I described it as 100 towns switched together, while Saigon was 10 cities stitched together. Saigon wasn't too much my vibe and it was much hotter there. Also visited Da Lat which was fun and relaxing. I can't wait to get back to VN and next time will visit Da Nang as well. - WW

      You might enjoy Sa Pa as it's further north...which means colder. Many people love Hoi An, but that might be too warm for you. Hue and Ninh Binh are great (check out the videos from Alright Anton! since he did great drone shots from there). If you're interested in war stuff, get a guided tour like CularTravels (he did the 1/2 day tour but said he should have done the whole day one). Hue is known for it's food, if you can do a food tour, then I'd recommend doing that.

    Just think of this, the North Vietnamese occupied the top half of Vietnam has to deal with invaders (United States, Australia, New Zealand, Republic of (South) Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines) all at the same time. Just think of that, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. if that wasn't bad enough, they have to deal with troops from south Vietnam as well. The North Vietnamese understand the important of independent, self governing, and freedom from slavery and oppression. They were willing to give up everything to fight for it, that is 20 fking years of sacrifice. Prior to that they have to deal with the French, Japanese, Chinese, and the Mongols, totaling nearly 4000 years of war. There were no country on earth with that size, fighting against that number of countries, and still come out on top. And don't forget they're the ones that rescue the Cambodian from the Pol Pot, the Khmer regime when the world completely ignores it. No doubt the North Vietnamese deserves respect.

      Actually it is cold in 3 months, not 3 weeks. Hanoi winter period often starts from late of November and very cold during December of previous year to February, even late of March of next year.
      In which, the lowest temperatures are at some days in December, January and February. The winter temperatures in Hanoi may drop to 9-10 degrees Celsius and it is called to be deep cold. However, deep cold only lasts about 3-4 days to one week and then, the temperature may rise again at 15-17 degrees Celsius and there may be a few sunny days but still very cold.

I think you can go around the West Lake and then go to the 65th floor of the lotte tower to see a round of Hanoi from above =))btw if you have more time, you can try the tram ride of Hanoi, although not too modern, it also helps you see clearly the life of the people and the architecture of the city.

This was really interesting look at Hanoi. I've friends that have travelled to Vietnam and raved about their time in the country. However, they didn't display it the way you did so I'm getting a totally different vibe. I've never been to Vietnam, but your travels make it an attractive destination. Imperial city builed by Ly dynasty, not builded by Chinese or something else. Even more, The Forbidden City in China was designed by a Vietnamese chief architect named Nguyen An. :

    I just watched your vlog what a great video. I saw you ate the Bún chả Hà Nội, the broth is actually the dipping sauce and it is not meant for you to slurp but just to slightly pour a spoon or two into an bowl that your put all the veggies/herbs vermicelli noodle and top on it would be the bbq pork belly and sausage patties. Just in case you need to try it once more time.

      A lot of people at it like she did and some Westerners have been known to drink the broth like soup. LOL! The only thing I didn't see her do was add the minced garlic and chili to the broth and dip her fried spring roll in it. Otherwise, the way she ate is fine. She probably saw others around her eating and took note.

    Tell your father thank you for giving refuge in Canada to those from the USA who saw the folly of invading Vietnam and I thank the Vietnamese people for being so forgiving. One only has to read "The Pentagon Papers" by Neil Sheehan to learn as Henry Kissinger has said, "The USA has no allies, only interests".

    If you are still in Hanoi, contact me. I will take you to eat the best of Hanoians. Bun Cha Huong Lien is not a delicious restaurant that locals eat. The people of Hanoi eat very well, I think you will like it.
