- Louie the Lightning Bug showed up every Saturday morning in North Texas for much of the 1980s. Any couch potato kid from around here will remember him well.

I was cutting a tree up on a lift today, and saw a power line in the way. I immediately sang to myself "YOU GOTTA PLAY IT SAFE AROUND POWER LINES!" 🤣🤣
Louie was created by and is trademarked to Alabama Power Company. Voiced by Jack Sheldon. First aired in 1983 on the Alabama Public Television network and quickly became popular across the rest of the US, Canada and the Caribbean. Masterpieces of our childhood!
I literally was at work today when I thought about these commercials,..came and found em on UA-cam 💯
I love how these work! Not only is it a quick PSA that can easily get children's attention with its somewhat creative characters but it also provides catchy songs to help kids quickly remember the song around the times that they are in these situations.
And still no one pays attention.

I remember when Commonwealth Edison (now ComEd) used to play these commercials back in the late '80s and early '90s in the Chicagoland area during afternoon cartoons!

This was made in the mid 80s and played for about 20 years regularly around the USA. Also look up Daffy Duck fire and Bugs Bunny PSA's, those were made around the same time.
I am from Illinois, and this guy was one of my favorite PSA characters as well( him and McGruff)

HL&P in Houston had these also. HL&P is now Centerpoint and I still see them played every once in a while.
Man! I grew up in Kansas City Kansas and saw these when I was young. It's been 15 or 20 years since I've seen this, but I was joking I should fly a kite in a thunderstorm or by powerlines. My brain suddenly went, ya never fly kites near power lines! Haha fantastic

I still remember most of the lines from this ad; it was for Toledo Edison when I saw it all those years ago.

I think a lot of electrical companies used Louie as their mascot, because we had him up in Canada as well with the exact same commercials.

CenterPoint Energy in Southeast Texas/Houston.
They still air these. I just saw one. The original ones said HL&P though, these have CenterPoint kind of awkwardly added to the end.
This used to be on TV in Southern Colorado when I was a kid. Except it had the Colorado Springs Utilities logo at the end.
These commercials were also shown on TV in Canada by several Canadian utilities up to a few years ago.
Geez, I thought Louie was just Manitoba hydro's mascot...

I have been looking for this commercial for a LONG TIME! Thanx for posting it. I remember this commercial so vividly. I loved the ending where he ad libs and starts singing "YES YOU'VE GOT TO PLAY IT SAFE, AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUND" That part is cut out of this video, but he does it at the end. LOL

We had a similiar commercial to this by Massachusetts Electric with a character named "ZAP!".... does anyone else remember that?

Your not going to believe this, but I submitted the idea of a light bulb with wings to a hydro logo design contest when I was 6. They got my mom to sign a release, gave me a t-shirt (which I thought was a huge score), and then got a professional designer to finalize the concept. I guess that person was Mike Lester.....
Louie got around! His little wings must be jacked up now!
I live in Oklahoma, I'd love to see TV return to this kind of programing. I have kids now, and i (against my will) watch a bunch of childrens TV and it's all like soap opera's and sit-coms for kids... man... what the hell happened?
