  • Welcome to our channel! In this video, May Beaubrun, M.Ed, BCBA, LBA discusses the crucial concept of cultural competence and its impact on Behavior Analysis. Cultural competence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from diverse cultures and belief systems, and when applied to treatment, it yields remarkable results.
Incorporating cultural competence into your practice can lead to improved outcomes, increased client satisfaction, and motivate clients to become equal partners within their care/clinical team. We explore how increasing cultural understanding and diversity in Applied Behavior Analysis is essential for providing culturally responsive treatment.
The updated Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts emphasizes cultural responsiveness and diversity, making it vital for practitioners. We share examples of how to infuse cultural awareness into assessments, from self-care to feeding, sleep, and toileting practices.
Aligning goals with the values of your clients and their families, considering factors like primary language, family dynamics, holidays, religious/spiritual beliefs, and independence, is key to delivering effective treatment. This not only respects individual preferences but also addresses the concept of social validity.
May also discusses the importance of reporting demographic variables, as underreporting can lead to misrepresentations and hinder adherence to our ethical code. The demand for behavior analysis to serve diverse cultural backgrounds is increasing, highlighting the need for culturally competent behavior analysts.
As demographics continue to shift, it is imperative that our practices evolve to meet the changing needs of our clients. We recommend using the "Assessment of Culturally Sensitive Practice in Behavior Analysis" as a valuable resource when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds.

This is very important, understanding the demographic you are working with in any field could be the difference between a response that is receptive and a response that is defensive. You could be building walls rather than breaking them down because you don’t take the time to understand a person and their culture.
