Does no one know the NHS is falling apart from lack of funds?
At £250,000 a meter, I'd be tempted to go out with a shovel and do the 1st meter at a discounted rate of £125,000. But then I'd remember you can't buy our English heritage, culture and traditions so I'd put the shovel to better use and prepare areas for the people who think you can.

Im quite happy to use the cheeky cut through when the 303 comes to a standstill going up the hill from roundabout when I head to Devon. The 303 was once nothing more than a country lane in times gone by. That country lane should have remained a country lane. Absolute waste of money.
The tunnel scheme is an expensive abomination. I believe that they could build a large P&R at Solstice Park, a new parallel byway could be built to the south of the A303 and as Kate mentioned a pedestrian subway could then be built under the Stonehenge Bottom embankment. In the future many of the shuttle buses from the VC to the stones and back plus from any new P&R site will be electric and probably autonomous. I could go on.
The guy that wants the tunnel won't even be alive when that tunnel gets built.

Pretty bonkers to dig a tunnel and two massive cuttings through an ancient world heritage site.
Look at what they are doing to Gobekli Tepi. This is all Blackrock. For some reason they are destroy the ancient sites around the world before the reset is done.

There's something odd going on here. There is no apparent benefit to spending obscene amounts of money on this scheme when every single local council cannot afford to repair dangerously sized potholes all over the place, many are even going bankrupt. I'd love to know the REAL REASON they want to dig this tunnel. 'Someone' must be funding it, and for nefarious reasons, they don't spend this amount of money to actually help people or the environment. What's going on??

It is all very simple. The A303 is the principal trunk road from tthe South East to Devon and Cornwall. As such it ought to be dual carriageway throughout. It is gradually being dualled; the section between Sparkford and Ilchester is in progress. Stonehenge and the area around it is a world heritage site of paramount importance. It comprises not just the stones but the whole surrounding landscape that is full of archaeology. This should be a joined up whole and a busy main road passing within yards of the stones is a scandal. any improvemenmts to the road must take into account the Stonehenge world heritage site and the only sensible option is a tunnel. The argument has been about how long tthe tunnel should be. The current plans have the western portal of the tunnel being inside the World Heritage area and this has upset many because irreplaceable archaeology would be destroyed. Sttonehenge will still be there well after motor transport as we know it is just a distant memory. If we mess this up future generations will curse us for our vandalism. Anyway there are absolutely no nefarious reasons for this, justt trying to gett the best solution with limited funding.
All that digging straight though historical grounds. They'll either be stopping every few feet to preserve archeological artifacts, or do the work at midnight so there are no witnesses to the destruction of them.

As a world heritage site it belongs to the people of this planet, not only to the powers that be in Britain. This reminds me of the destruction of the archeology at Gobekli Tepe when they built the road right up to the covered structure which also destroyed archeology when the planted those poles in to support the structure. Not cool😡

We the people have a right to drive by our own heritage for free.
If people didn't slow down to gawp at the stones when driving past then wouldn't actually need to do anything with the road. EVERY Time been caught in traffic whichever direction travelling in has been due to people slowing down to look at the stones rather then driving past and going in to the site. Once the traffic gets to where you cannot see the stones through the windscreen then the traffic seems to be able to speed up and disappear and then you wonder what the issue was.
Join English Heritage/National Trust and go to the visitor centre instead rather then causing congestion on the A303
You will still be able to walk past. I suggest you consult an OS map on which public foottpatths are marked.

The ulterior motive is to dig under the Henge and discover whats under there - probably tunnels and more.
Nothing less than a national vote should decide.. I'm quite positive the outcome would be to leave it as is. I'm absolutely appalled.

Dear Hugh, thank you for this report ❗️👍🏻🙏🏻 My question would be, what is the King’s opinion on this matter and project plans? I know HM Charles III can be very enthusiastic and passionate about different community projects, but here we have got a situation involving a beyond first category, not only national, but a world heritage level site, which really should and must stay untouched. At least from such projects as this one.
P.S.: Maybe Douglas Adams was at least a bit visionary with his story of ‘galactic highway’ … 🤔😉
This is a crime against humanity
It would be cheaper to reroute the A303. Quite why anyone would even consider doing this is absolutely bizarre. It is absolutely a road building company that wants a lucrative contract. They could not care less about the site. Imagine if they found something significant and the whole project ground to a halt after £1bn had been spent?
To dig understanding they are going to be opening up Pandora's box for sure. Good luck with that.
