      Just a really, really old red brick wall. You can see it in some of my earlier videos. I put up the blue curtain because in the summer when I'm tanned, I kinda of blended in to the red background...

    Wow…. I’ve searched for a solution to this for a very long time. Sure enough I had some shared folders pinned to quick access. Windows 10 is such junk.

    Ooh, big performance "no-no" right from the gate:
    don't download anything to your desktop.
    Keeping anything but folder/program shortcuts on your desktop hinders performance a lot.

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  Рік тому +2

      That was more true in the olden days. I currently have 3GB of files on my desktop, which is stored on my NVMe SSD. My puter is blazingly fast nonetheless. If those files were stored on a mechanical HDD, then it would be slow - especially when first logging in when Windows loads the desktop. Now, when I find somebody with 200 files on their desktop, they can't even see their wallpaper, and many of those files are 2GB in size, then I scold them. ;)

      @@ScottiesTech I guess that this rule also doesn't apply to more modern computers. If you're running a 16 core 64 GB RAM beast then refreshing your desktop files might be a non-issue. I tend to keep things on the safe side by not overcrowding my desktop. I think it was in one of your videos & your tips tend to work very well!

      @@Apollo440 Yeah, I only just recently realized how heavy my desktop had become (I had a few folders that were BIG), and I went, "Oh, that's weird..." Then I realized why it was still zippy. But in general, I'm all for having a clean desktop (on my puter and my real-life desk). Messy desks tend to indicate messy brains, which are usually less efficient anyway. Mindset and all, ya know? And my case is pretty tame... Some of my coworkers are like I described above. Then they're like, "Why is my puter so slow?" and it's a variety of things... Cluttered desktop with countless HUGE files, they haven't restarted their web browser in like 3 weeks which means it's using 3.5GB of RAM and is very slow since they also have 100 old tabs open, and so on. So, when I download to my Desktop, I tend to clean up after myself. But when most other people do it, then tend to be messy. So, yeah, I guess I better be more careful about mentioning things like that in my vids!! :P

    • @Apollo440
      @Apollo440 Рік тому +2

      @@ScottiesTech Haha, yeah, you have to weight every word and casual phrase because of how many people watch your videos.
      The messy desktop - messy brain connection is real, for sure!
      And keeping track of the browser tab count - must be the golden rule of performance troubleshooting these days! I got a tab suspender for each browser.
      But at the end of the day you got to make it a habit to close down tabs you're not using, which leads us back to that desktop and brain interconnection.
      So, with all things considered - good performance comes from good habits! One may cal it - computer hygiene 101. :)

    Now that you mention it, it started happening to me about a week ago, right after I shut down my NAS (since i rarely need it i keep it shut down most of the time to save energy).
    I wonder if windows just gets stuck on some sort of verification when trying to connect to the truenas link on my quick access when doing completely unrelated tasks. I know Windows does that sort of thing, like i remember copy/pasting a file between my 2 internal SSDs and windows just randomly spins up my external hdd for absolutely no reason, So i Believe every time you perform some operation on explorer it probably goes through every pinned destination and if one of them returns null or whatever it just halts there and doesn't auto-refresh.

    I was truely hoping this was it. But unforunately not so. I have tried DISM,SFC scannow. reset Folders to default. restart Windows Explorer even re-installed Windows and the tips you just presented and yet it persists. But I will continue to search until I find a solution. Maybe there is something I haven't tried yet. If you have any other ideas I am all ears......

    Wow I've never experienced this one! I don't think Win10 and older has the restart option in task manager, so what I do there kill explorer, then hit WIN+R to bring up Run Task (can also be found in the task manager menu), and just type "explorer" and hit enter. This is also useful when explorer just completely borks itself, and has worked since win 98 at least.
