The young Darth Vader was added in to that force ghost scene in the end after they finished making episodes 1-3. Before that we had the original Anakin who was an older guy as he was when he died.

A sad man who murdered billions. And children too--by cutting and stabbing them. He even tried to lead his son down the same path. The fact that Vader felt regret and sorrow shows that he was always just Anakin, not some separate persona. Vader's thoughts, feelings and actions were Anakin's thoughts, feelings and actions. @SwitchTalkChannel 7 місяців тому +6

@@0okamino I'd mostly give credit to Lucas' genius writing (3 films of build-up, don't forget) and great editing. But, the music, voice acting, and body actor also play key roles.
The emotion we see is mostly from the viewer and prior knowledge. Ash was uncertain, for example. His large eyes on the mask help, as well. Depending on the context, those large, eyeless eyes can convey fury, emptiness, sadness, or love.
An old Soviet test from about 1925 proved that it's all editing and viewer imprinting. They showed different viewers the same image, and intercut it with different objects. This gave the viewers a completely different sense of the image (man smiling), despite the fact his expression was the same, and did not innately convey any of the meanings (love, sorrow, and sadness, if I can recall).
It's funny that editing was born from state propaganda in the Soviet Union and then perfected by the Nazis a decade later, only to be truly gifted to the world by Disney and others a few years after that (not that genius film-making had not existed). It has been suggested that Lucas borrowed lots of images/set design, etc. from the Nazis, actually. Not sure if this was intentional or not, as one famous image shows a likeness for the Jedi, not the Sith. I'd be interested, either way. Could have been subconscious or just good design since it wasn't identical.

People always seem to confuse Leia's words "somehow... I always knew." to mean that she knew they were brother and sister when she kissed him in episode v. Not at all, she simply means that she felt a connection to him that she could not explain. The kiss in episode v was to make Han jealous, not some incestuous thing. George Lucas always wanted to do prequels as well, but he felt that the technology in the 70s just wasn't advanced enough for what he wanted of the prequels, so he waited 20 years to do them, and his company actually pioneered much of the modern film tech that we see today for the prequels.

If Lucas didn't advance in visual effects with eps1-3, movies now would look much differently. Plus EP3 still holds up now visually. Even the most stunning movies will look dated in time. The movie with the Greatest CGI ever (Avatar 2) will look awful in 20 years too.

You also have films like "Terminator," and "Terminator 2" which hold up EXTREMELY well.
The problem with the prequels of the overuse of CGI. While a lot of other films mixed CGI with practical effects and look much better.

As for why Leia kissed Luke if she always knew he was her brother... real explanation is they weren't written as siblings yet. Lucas had planned on a sibling but decided that it would be Leia after Empire. I know this based on the preludes to the novelizations of these books where they say while writing the script, they were still deciding on who Leia would end up with
In universe, there's never been an official explanation, but a fan came up with one. He theorized that Luke and Leia felt a Force connection. But they misinterpreted it as attraction. Then when Leia kissed him, they felt something was wrong and didn't pursue it further. So when Leia says she's always known, she's always felt something. She just couldn't put a name to it until Luke told her

Also, it's crazy to think that this was Ian Mcdiarmid's first performance as Emperor Palpatine and that a decade or so after this movie was filmed, he was brought back to portray a younger Palpatine in the prequels. Basically, the green lightsaber symbolises "we had big trouble to animate the blad with a blue sky in the background. So we changed the color for technical reasons" ;)
    When it comes to color.
Lucas never thought about a meaning beyond red=evil, blue=good.
They changed to green for technical reason and sam jackson got a purple one because he asked for it.
But then came the game knights of the old republic and gave their classes a color.
    Warrior=blue
    Mage=green
    A bit of both=yellow
And that clicked with fans so much that they retroactively gave meaning to all the colors and now it became common knowledge that it was always like that, even as a matter of fact it was never canon to begin with.

I a firmly convinced that as phenomenal a twist as Empire was, it would not be as beloved if the trilogy did not stick the landing. It is phenomenal that with a few body/voice acting choices and some visual storytelling, Darth Vader goes from the boogeyman of the story to the one we are crying over at his funeral.
On the note about the prequels after this trilogy, while you are correct that you will know who lives and won't be worried about them, Lucas plays a major trick with those movies. When you're watching them, and you know what is to come, it's like watching a mass casualty event that you know is coming and you can't do anything to stop it. You're just seeing all the little moments that you know lead to the same outcome. It fills you with an immense sense of dread and helplessness.
I actually use the finale of Clone Wars as a great example of this without giving anything away. The closer you get to what you know is about to happen, the stronger the sense of foreboding. The darker the hints get. The more drastic you scream at the screen wishing you could tell the characters not to go down this path. Lucas knew how to use the audience's knowledge of the original trilogy to make you feel like you were the only one who could do anything to stop what is to come, and yet no one will listen

    8. Carrie Fisher said in her biography that the most satisfying part in her Star Wars experience was choking out Jabba.
    9. Jedi is plural. With Luke and Leia leading the way they can reestablish the Jedi back into the galaxy.
    10. Ford wanted Han to die in the last episode.

Vader read Luke's mind. He didn't feel it through Luke.
The Jedi are actually Jedi Knights. The Sith are Sith Lords.
The audience didn't know Luke and Leia are brother and sister and the actors, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher didn't know, but George Lucas did. The audience had to wait 3 years to find out. With _The Empire Strikes Back_ Lucas wanted to keep people guessing who Leia would end up with. Actually, it was neither Luke nor Han, because Han was already married when they met, although only die hard fans know about that.

Love this movie SO MUCH!!! My dad and I used to sit and watch this on VHS when I was a toddler (yeah, I’m that old). Sadly, he died a little more than a year ago and I’ll be honest, that final scene with Luke and Anakin (the unmasking) is hard for me to watch now. But I think that speaks to how profound the symbolisms of this series are that they mirror our real experiences as powerfully as they do.
Thanks for the great OT reactions, you too!

The ewoks (not to be confused with wookies*) are nicknamed "murder bears" because they killed a large army of stormtroopers, were ready to cook and eat Han and Luke and they play music on their victims decapitated heads.
They're adorable because Warwick Davis (actor, little person and only 12 at the time) was in that first Ewok costume when "Wickett" found Leia. He went on to star in Willow and The Leprecaun films, plays Professor Filius Fitwick and Griphook in the Harry Potter films and appears as Wickett and other roles (mostly cameos) in Star Wars films, projects and functions (hosting panels for SW Celebration). He's probably the franchise's best goodwill ambassador.
    * originally supposed to be wookies, it was decided that Chewie piloting the Falcon meant his race was too advanced to be the primitives they're supposed to be for this film - so they went smaller and moved the "E" from the back to the front of the name.

HAHAHAHA! You guys cheering for Anakin turning back and Ash taking his shirt off like his favorite football team just won the big game was awesome! It was this moment, where Darth turned back to Anakin and killed the Emperor that he fulfilled the prophecy that he would return balance to the force. By killing the evil Darth Sidious he restored the force to a time of peace. The way the Sith work is that there are always only two: a master and his apprentice. So, with both dead, there are no more. The Sith work like this: Only 2, with the master always looking to find a more powerful apprentice and trying to gain more and more power, and the apprentice aiming to topple his master and become the master. It's a pure power play on the dark side.

Yes brother! The true story of Star wars is the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.
The two most popular stories in any given medium, is the story of revenge and the story of redemption.
This is why Star wars has stood the test of time, it is a tale of redemption. And we want to believe the people we have can be returned.
Vadar represents the dual nature of man. And a reminder of the depths a man can fall to just trying to protect the ones he loves from harm.

“Somehow I’ve always known,” is not Leia saying in a literal sense that she’s always known Luke’s her brother, she is not confessing to knowingly being a sibling kisser, what she means in a poetic sense is that she’s always felt a connection between herself and Luke, him explaining that they’re siblings makes her reflect and realise that on some level she’s always known, which _is_ still weird but it’s nowhere near as bad as people like yourselves take it.
No one makes jokes at Luke’s expense, it’s always Leia who gets to be the punching bag of literal minded people.
