Yes! that's true!! ☺️The difference is clearer when you put the two instruments next to each other; even during a performance, it doesn't look as obvious!
This was great - I should really do more with the Viola, I tend to just use two Volins. Great tip on the C String, I'll put that into use on my next piece!
Thank you so much for the clarity of your explanation. I am a collaborative pianist/piano teacher and incorporate basic music appreciation in all of my lessons. This will be a great source! Best of luck to you both!
To be honest.. I'm a guitarist and a bass player... I already heard the difference from the first example which was very close... but totally noticeable.... 😁
Thank you both, this has been a very helpful video. I was always curious about the difference between these instruments and now l've learned something!😁🫰
They got the violinist to play the viola though? The style is diff in both so it was harder to tell the diff For the first one I guessed B just because it was more likely to be like that (the strings were less resonant but more "clear")
What are your thoughts on a 5-string violin (or 5-string viola)? -- Just stumbled onto your video, and I enjoyed it very much. Always nice to see people having a good time together.
I like a 5-string instrument. With a little bit of adjustment, you can get used to it quickly and play both violin & viola pieces. The 5-string versions are more commonly found in electric instruments, but there are also some custom made acoustic instruments. 😊🎶
@@TheEightStrings Glasser makes them in Carbon Composite as well as ones that include all the accessories & even 5 String Cellos. Even though the 5 String Violin C String sounds different from that same String on a 5 String Viola (etc for each string) they could blend in to create a special sound.
@@TheEightStrings They are also on Acoustic-Electric Instruments. The 5 String Violins, 5 String Violas, & 5 String Cellos (that's what I'm getting as a Multi-Instrumentalist soon) all tuned the same way kinda remind me of Bobby Hicks:ua-cam.com/video/oUQIqEf2-xg/v-deo.html who plays 5 String Fiddle & because one of the Fiddlers from his band sadly died, he added a Low C String to his Violin so he can play the Harmony parts below the Lead Lines.
The Eight Strings They do make 5 String Violin & 5 String Violas that tuned the same way (C, G, D, A, E) (Glasser makes them in Carbon Composite & the outfits include all accessories the instrument & even a case) & you'll really hear the differences in sound when you play the same music on both.
@@TheEightStrings The 7 String Viper adds on a Low Bb (6 String Cobra has High E & Low F added). The additional strings facilitate transposition, the frets make it easier to find the notes w/o having to put tapes on the fingerboard, geared tuners make tuning simpler, the shape adds a bit of rock n Roll, & yeah the strap makes it easier to hold, which is why in my opinion 7 String Fretted Vipers & 6 String Fretted King Cobra Cellos (with straps included plus case etc) are alot easier in many ways to start with than Standard Violins, Violas, & Cellos (eventually they'll have 6 String Upright Electric Basses tuned in Fifths an Octave below the Cobra Cellos for bigger boom, as well as 7-9 String Versions) cause they are alot sturdier, & the physics makes them easier to get around with playing in every key really in tune (as well as practicing via Amp-Phones), plus string players can sing away their hearts out to back up the choir which is even cooler. The high price of electric bowed instruments I see in the Electric Violin Shop is kinda a mistake because (like with Electric Guitars or any Electric amplified instruments that plug into an amp which are physically easier to start with) the sturdier construction does reduce damage & that's something they should keep an eye on. Fractional Sized Vipers (up to 7 Strings & Frets), as well as Fractional Sized King Cobra Cellos (up to 6 Strings, Frets, & the additional Strap) should be available someday. Electric Bowed instruments fit into every setting from Orchestra, & even Marching Band cause now your Band music can add on Strings & more rock n roll.
@@TheEightStrings Adding on a Case & all accessories to every instrument rocks. I played any way you want it by Journey on my Kazoo:ua-cam.com/video/5Zxknnz4QwQ/v-deo.html & also on the worlds largest Harmonica (Big ol Bass-Chord Harmonica).
@@TheEightStrings Well you can already hear a difference between the 5 String Violin & 5 String Viola tuned the same way. Of course Mark Wood could play this song on the 7 String Fretted Viper:ua-cam.com/video/bdr27855V5I/v-deo.html w/ Hernandez Hideaway cause every song needs a bit of Rock n Roll to get the best texture. Choir w/ just Piano & Rhythm Section isn't enough so let's bump it up w/ Concert Band & Strings, so the Hal Leonard company is working on Concert Band & String Orchestra versions of Light in the Hallway arranged by Roger Emerson to go with the Choral arrangement.
Oh these videos are awesome! I’m waiting for a 3D printed electric violin from a printing lab I spoke with 😊 Unfortunately I can’t see it until February because I’m away, but when I get back I’ll add a Barbera pick-up and see how it goes 😁
I learnt to play the violin and after a while, I realized that I hated the E string! I loved the G string but wished there was an even lower string. Eventually I realized that I wanted a Viola.
Initially, I thought the violin was A. But then I went back and re-watched/listened to it a few times and changed my mind. The violin has a higher sound, so it had to be B.
From this video, I have determined I hear violas in the 1999-2004 ITV News theme tune, and not violins. Here's a link to it: ua-cam.com/video/qGWCzdHIr0k/v-deo.html
True story about the invention of the Viola: Once a french instrument maker made a huge, ugly, deformed, disgusting violin. He said: "Voila!". The dyslexic journalist printed in the newspaper: "and the craftsman said: Viola!"
I knew the violin was making a high sound, but I didn't know that the size was so different.
Yes! that's true!! ☺️The difference is clearer when you put the two instruments next to each other; even during a performance, it doesn't look as obvious!

Thanks for such a clear and detailed explanation 🙏🌈🌸🌸 But how come the very first pice you played sounded the same 😮
Haha thank you! Let's just say that our instruments match in sound 😀
loved the way you told everything in very entertaining way

Brilliant demo!
I have been playing viola for so long and have not been able to guess the sound correctly lol 😂

And if you put violin strings on a viola? I mean the high E string. That would be a comparison (the E string played on a viola vs on the violin).
Depending on how big the viola is, it may actually break when tuning.
Very interesting. 😁

the difference is viola burns longer

what is the song at 2:14
It’s called ‘You raise me up’. We did a cover here: ua-cam.com/video/TabBDDhWWH4/v-deo.html
I was so confident when I said A was the violin😭
Common: violin, violin, big violin, giant violin.
Expert: violin, viola, cello, double bass.
Where is the bass?
This reminds me of soprano vs alto choir wars 😂😂😂 I’m an alto and I think the viola has a fuller/richer tone 🥰
Pretty
