I needed to make this same repair on a Standard toilet and bought an American Standard coupling kit from my local hardware store hoping it would work. My kit came with no instructions and I only wanted to do this once, so I went looking for vids that may show the order the hardware went together.
I knew the bolt went through the rubber washer, then through the tank, but everything beyond that was rusted and degraded and destroyed in disassembly. Here's what worked for me (top to bottom):
    Brass bolt head
    Rubber washer
    Tank bottom
    Rubber washer
    Steel washer
    Hex nut
    Bowl
    Steel washer
    Wing nut
    Hope that helps.
Oh, and Standard and American Standard are the same company. They just changed the name in 1967.

Thanks Tim! I opened the lid and looked at the 4 digit model number of my American Standard champion model then Googled it for a tank gasket (if you type seal you get the flapper seal) then clicked on the result to home depots website with an official gasket set. I searched the Q&A for my model and saw AS recommended a slightly different model than the page I was one. Went to Amazon for the new kit part number and bought it for $30. I think mine is the just through bolts leaking but could be the tank to bowl gasket itself. 10 years old and never use cleaners but the through bolt looks like a rubber worm is growing out of it haha so I assume the seals are deteriorating.

Hi Tim, My Dad has a couple of old, 2-piece American Standard toilets that were installed in 1961. A few years ago, I rebuilt one of the tanks using Universal parts. The tank to bowl gasket I used works (no leaks) but, after I installed the tank & filled it with water, the tank itself, would want to rock back towards the wall because the tank to bowl gasket wasn't actually the correct one so, I had to install some lumber between the rear of the tank and the wall to support the tank so that the tank would not rock back. So now I just realized I need to rebuild my Dad's other tank and I just found this specific video of yours on the 2-piece American Standard toilets. My question is: For this old, 2-piece American Standard toilet, can you give me a part number for the tank to bowl gasket you used to repair the the toilet in this vid? You had mentioned Gerber, American Standard, & Wolverine brass but, if I could get a part number, that would be great! I just want to make sure I get something that will work properly this time :

What about the metal gasket inside the bowl and the rubber gasket under the tank bowl? Possible leaks.

Hey Tim, you could of shown, shutting off the water supply, taking the water out of the tank, the placement of the top and bottom gaskets! And used the correct tank seal, I tried the normal round gasket and it didn’t work!! I have the correct kit to use now, but wasn’t sure how to place the washers!!

My toilet doesn’t touch the wall and as a result it was leaking. I now know to replace the gasket and bolts. What do I do to prevent my grown kids from leaning back pushing the tank towards the wall? Do they sell things to prevent the tank from moving back?

I have a 1952 American standard with tank ball flapper and brass innards and I cannot get the tank off the bowl. The tank nuts and washers have been removed. Thoughts?

Thanks for posting this, but I was really hoping you were going to explain exactly how the tank to bowl seal sits on the back of the toilet. I have a similar standard toilet and I’ve tried three different seal kits and in every one of them the tank does not sit flush against the porcelain of the toilet, they all hold the tank up slightly above the porcelain and the tank rocks left to right before tightening it down with the bolts. And even after tightening it down reasonably with the bolts, being careful not to over tighten, the tank still has some play in it and doesn’t sit firmly on the porcelain of the toilet. This didn’t seem right to me but I wasn’t sure. I’ve watched a few other videos and none of them go into detail about exactly how the seal should be set in place and what the end result is supposed to be. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Mine is the same. Maybe 1/4 inch rock front to back.
My plan is to give the seal a few days (weeks, months) to compress, and check back periodically to see if I can take up the slack on the wing nuts at bottom. @@joey-mp3qc
