@@jonathanlake6053😂 Rubbish. I've had one during the entire history of the CD and the record company, yes the record company replaced it free of charge & costs. Elton John's greatest hits if anyone's interested 🤷 Contrast that to your warped & poorly pressed records that arrive with complimentary scratches & get that service. I have 1000's of records but I'm not buying the hipster hype & going back for the rip off 😂
@@stepheng8779 Lucky you, I can only tell you from my own experience, the Rhino & Warner music Cd's from the 2010's onward are showing disc rot now as well, along with playback issues.Agreed that modern LP's are lacking in quality, but the older vinyl is miles ahead in quality.
Good video, a friend of mine who works for an independent record company tells me that inflation has made it really expensive to press them, it has also heated up the 2nd hand market for desirable titles. But certain bands like Roxy Music, ABC etc are extortionate in price in HMV & as you say, you should be able to pick up those LPs between £5 & £10 at a decent 2nd hand record shop.
The price of vinyl here in Australia is also crazy. For example the new P!nk tour edition double vinyl is $99.00 (about £53.00), the new Rolling Stones album is $85.99 (about £46.00). I don’t buy much vinyl these days (I bought so much in the 80s when things were so much cheaper - god I miss those days), I buy the occasional cd but mostly I stream these days.
They’ve got another sale on at the moment. I was in there yesterday looking at the sale vinyl and there was an Avenged Sevenfold album reduced from £59.99 to about £35. I often wonder who buys some of these full-price albums before they get reduced. Do they actually sell any at the full price. Some of the prices are laugh-out-loud high. I remember seeing an Elton John single album for £60 in there last year (at least the Avenged Sevenfold was a double or triple) and thinking WTF who buys that at that price.
Thank Matthew I really like your channel and the stuff you cover. I’m going to head over to HMV tomorrow and see what they’ve got. I agree about the price of vinyl. I’ve sort of come to expect around £20 - £25 for purchasing on line. But if an album was around £18 I would definitely be buying more vinyl
Just been to the HMV in Oxford Street , well loads of vinyl bit it’s all overpriced . At least Fopp ( HMV ) had old vinyl in their shop at Covent Garden for about £3 , some crappy artists at this price , but there were some good albums too !
Just come across your channel. Certainly agree with your thoughts on pricing. Your T-shirt caught my eye Quick Step and Into The Gap, 2 of my fav 80s albums.
Same here I'm a massive fan. This year I recorded a cover of Kamakazie and retitled Frozen in time fully approved by Tom. It's on this channel as well as Spotify and bandcamp :)
i thought it was just me being shocked at the price of vinyl in the UK - i was buying albums back in the 80's for £5 --- so 50 seems a bit steep even giving it's 40 years later.....
I believe trade prices are much much higher. Then they have to cover rent & wages on the high street . They have an awful alot of ilundold dvd /blu ray stock. Alot of HMV space devoted to music & film merchandise now rather than albums
The reduced price is for new excess stock from Universal UMG who have been clearing their shelves and selling cheap to retailers rather than the retailers reducing existing stock prices.
Sounds about right. Though how do you explain how say a copy of Aladdin sain is £45 in HMV/Fopp and yet under £25 in most indie shops ? HMV could retail at less but don't. And I can see how universal are dumping a lot of stock by the reduction in prices of box sets recently. And I think this trend will continue first release of a box set will be a stupidly high price and then within a year it will be dramatically less. I've just taken delivery of Frank's up as 200 motels six CD box set for 30 UK pounds when it originally retailed for five times that
@@MatthewNorthMusicMany of the launch prices for these boxed sets seem excessive. I think the is when the largest % must be sold to completists. No new mixes or new material The rear cover has a solar panel which powers a single flashing led inside the new gatefold artwork cover.! That's it !! No lyrics or booklet 😒

Loathe HMV. They hoik their prices then offer deals at 40-50% off to still be higher priced than elsewhere. They were selling new CDs at £21, £10 on Amazon. How they’re still going I don’t know.

Have to agree. For a shop fighting to stay open they arent doing themselves any justice with the ludicrous prices. I fight tooth and nail to shop the highstreet over online buying but i cant seem to support hmv and their insane prices
We went into Exeter city South West England recently. They seem to have shifted the retail emphasis to artist & film merchandise. Probably couldn't make sufficient profit on physical albums, dvds ( They have 1000s of legacy stock of these from £2.99) & expensive Ultra Blu rays which never achieved mass market due to requiring new playback machines at a time streaming was really taking off. I buy cds- often more content & affordable. As you say £30 - £40 is too much for a vinyl album. I think more is sold on pre sale these days. Generally much less overstock now (Accept Adele 30 I understand) Have seen people buying t"he HMV 2 for £40 or 3 for £55 vinyl album selection though
When HMV was in the Exeter guildhall in 1984 I heard the Gap by the Thompson Twins for the first time happy memories for me age 12. That was one of my go to shops as a little. That and tops in newton Abbot :)
I avoid newly pressed vinyl (at any price) like the plague. Quality control in vinyl has been on the decline since the late 70s. The last newly pressed record I (reluctantly) purchased had to be sent beck twice!
i just wont buy from them, they are ripping off the small minority of people who enjoy collecting vinyl, they will end up like Wilco, Debenhams and all the rest of the high street, going bust, serves them right
I thought they were re-opening the flagship store in Oxford St. instead it’s the shitty smaller store and the supposed ‘basement of vinyl’, is simply a cluttered section plonked in middle of all the other clutter. They’re simply trying to cash in on supposed vinyl revival. Find an independent store or check out 2nd hand shops instead 😉
The other flagship store which is now either Sports Direct or JD Sports was an amazing store. These new "The HMV Shop" stores are just full of Japanese fizzy drinks and superhero t shirts.
Totally agree with you, HMV have shot theirselves in the foot by charging stupid money for vinyl, i won't buy from them on principal.
Vinyl has had its day.
All hail the cd revolution
It's long from dead, try listening to all of your CD's in another 50 years time, many of my early eighties compact discs are suffering from disc rot.
Not many and actually I find most early to mid 80s CDs way better in sound than subsequent pressings.
