  • This tutorial shows how to make three types of flower rings. The first two have no stones, but the 3rd features a bezel set 3 mm pink Tourmaline. This is are Intermediate level projects. For materials, I used 16 and 18 gauge sterling round wire, 16 gauge sterling square wire, number 4 sterling Low Dome half round wire(5.89 mm), and 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) fine silver bezel strip in 28 gauge. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.
It is important to use safe practices when dealing with fire, sharp tools, and chemicals. Here is a video on safety: • General Silversmithing...

Oh man, do I feel your pain! I nearly botched a prong setting today, but think I saved it. We are human and make mistakes, but knowing how to salvage your work is so important. If you can't salvage, it's a learning exercise and has value. So...great save!

Hi Chad, I loved this episode. Spring has sprung! I have found that making a piece with any component with granulation or any other special texture, roll printed, etc. that if I put a little yellow ochre paste on it and heat it til dry and set, then be very specific about flux and solder placement, I can prevent solder flow into my texture/detail. Granulation is madly in love with sucking up solder. That pesky capillary action!Have you ever tried using any type of stop flow? If so, do you have a favorite? I prefer ochre to Masking Mud. I also have been advised that using water-based white correction fluid works well, AND washes off more easily. I always have to remember to scrub it off before putting it in the pickle. I don't want those iron oxides in my pickle (insta-copper-plating , no thanks)! 😂 🌺 🌺 🌺

I haven't tried to use stop flow of any sort. Perhaps I should give it a try:). Thanks Flying Chef!

@chadssilversmithing if you buy some, get the tiniest quantity you can, a small jar will last you and all your students 6 lifetimes!! Lol! 🌺

Very cool! My favorite is the Sunflower. In my experience, the center piece would have been the last thing to go on using easy solder so you don't have to use the high heat that melted the little balls.❤🤍💙

Those are some beautiful springtime projects. Fantastic work as always Chad and thanks for sharing. Have you ever used a tumbler for polishing?

Thanks, and yes Gazz. I have with stainless shot. It really only burnishes the surface, and does not remove scratches like a polishing wheel does.

Also, it is a debunked myth that tumbling properly work hardens a piece. As Chad states, tumbling is only a very superficial- though fantastically useful for certain pieces - technique. "Certain pieces" includes chains, small findings, and things you don't need a deep polish on, or need ro remove fire stain (cuprous oxide) from.

Hello Liza. I have successfully done one:). I plan to practice a few more times before I do a video on it.

I'm in Scotland and I was searching the net and could not find the flux you use - Mighty flux!! Looked up flux on Rio Grande site and found.............. My-T-Flux 😂 & after all that it doesn't appear to be available in the UK so back to my borax cone.

You might try looking for Battern’s self pickling flux. It is pretty much the same. Cooksongold also has a couple of liquid fluxes that may be comparable:)

Have a question. What would cause a bezel to disintegrate when soldering

Not sure:). I'd have to see it happening to give you a good answer.
