I’m a mother of two autistic children. I remember when I first watched this video, I thought to myself that she was either having a mental breakdown or that she was disabled. Her behavior looked very similar to my son’s sometimes when he gets overwhelmed. It’s difficult for him to regulate his emotions. I had a very different reaction than most of the people commenting on the original video. I was like, why is this woman filming her having a breakdown? She’s hiding behind a clothing rack, laughing and filming someone who’s obviously unstable. Someone who’s crying and asking her to stop. At the time I called it “bully behavior” and people called ME a Karen for my opinion. There are a lot of bully’s out there. I worry for my own disabled kids.
If the bully is black and victim is white, the people sticking up for the victim will ALWAYS be treated as the "Karen". That's how this works now. That's the double standard that has become prevalent most people will only call it out online, but not in real life.

Thank you for this follow up. My son has autism & I could tell she had cognitive issues. This story broke my heart when that video came out. Unfortunately, the BLM movement has created a culture of such hatred for white people that even those who are clearly mentally disabled aren't safe. I worry about my son accidentally bumping into the wrong person & having a public confrontation break out. We need to pray, because our nation is in such a spiritually dark place.

I told my friend, who is a psychologist, that I wondered if a lot of the “Karen” videos were actually showing women with mental illness, and she said she thought so. New Jersey does have a bias intimidation crime statute that perhaps the black woman could have believed happened to her, but she herself would likely also be guilty of it.

My autistic older brother has had these EXACT kinds of meltdowns. But I'm always there when he goes out just in case, and I can calm him down. But if you talk to him you can notice right away that he isn't all there. One such disorder is called “high functioning autism” they can live out mostly normal lives but over stimulus or extremely stressful situations can send someone like that into a panic similar to something that you would see who has low functioning autism (the kind that need handlers for them to function). I have a similar mental disability and have spent a lot of time in the classes with the other people who need special developmental learning assistance but are high functioning enough to be among normal students. It comes in a spectrum, some people can function better than others. This lady was clearly having a mental break down. Should she have tried to grab the phone? No absolutely not. Should that other lady have been filming her and mocking her in the first place? Also No. They’re both in the wrong here but the woman recording has a history of trying to instigate those kinds of incidents so she can make money. It’s not a stretch to believe if the woman put away her phone when she was asked to, the swipe would not have happened.

I actually got into a heated argument at my job with one of my more lefty coworkers when this was making the rounds. He SWORE that she was just evil and trying to get the poor black woman killed, but I tried to explain that it is OBVIOUS that the woman had mental problems, and was likely autistic. I take care of my almost 30 year old autistic brother, and have my entire adult life, and whenever he gets scared or confused or overwhelmed, even in situations that all of us would consider minor at most, hE CAN and HAS had these exact kinds of breakdowns, of course I'm always there to calm him down, and explain to everyone that he won't hurt anybody even though he is a big guy, so he has never been in THIS situation. But I saw the video and knew immediately. That woman WAS my brother. That is what would happen if my brother was out alone without me. People with disorders like autism can be very high-functioning, acting for all the world like they're just "normal" people. They just are easily overdtimulated by things normal people take for granted, crowds, lots of noise, strong smells, bright colors, even uncomfortable temperatures. The vast majority of high-functioning autistic people will NOT react in a way that endangers themselves or others, they will react exactly as this woman did: venting her raw emotions like a child would, trying to ground herself (lying on the floor is very common for autistic children having meltdowns, not sure if it's the same for adults, but it's a weird self soothing behavior of sorts), trying to withdraw into herself and get AWAY from the thing stressing her out. I have high-functioning autism, and while I'm fully aware enough even during my most severe panic attacks to NEVER harm anyone else or do anything reckless, the difference IS like night and day in my demeanor when I've hit that threshold of stress; it's like my train of thought just utterly breaks down, and even though I'm aware of it, I can't just pull it together so easily.

My adult daughter has moderate autism and has tantrums like this. Fun fact: nearly all the people/students who triggered her breakdowns in school were black. My daughter told me they would touch her, push her, talk loudly/yell, even strong smells and those are her triggers.

Ya know… I had a couple Muslim ladies react the exact same way when I tried to use the elevator at my old apartment complex with my 3 month old puppy. Karen’s come in every race, color, and creed. I’m a mother of two autistic children. I remember when I first watched this video, I thought to myself that she was either having a mental breakdown or that she was disabled. Her behavior looked very similar to my son’s sometimes when he gets overwhelmed. It’s difficult for him to regulate his emotions. I had a very different reaction than most of the people commenting on the original video. I was like, why is this woman filming her having a breakdown? She’s hiding behind a clothing rack, laughing and filming someone who’s obviously unstable. Someone who’s crying and asking her to stop. At the time I called it “bully behavior” and people called ME a Karen for my opinion. There are a lot of bully’s out there. I worry for my own disabled kids.

I told my friend, who is a psychologist, that I wondered if a lot of the “Karen” videos were actually showing women with mental illness, and she said she thought so. One such disorder is called “high functioning autism” they can live out mostly normal lives but over stimulus or extremely stressful situations can send someone like that into a panic similar to something that you would see who has low functioning autism (the kind that need handlers for them to function). I have a similar mental disability and have spent a lot of time in the classes with the other people who need special developmental learning assistance but are high functioning enough to be among normal students. It comes in a spectrum, some people can function better than others.
This lady was clearly having a mental break down. Should she have tried to grab the phone? No absolutely not. Should that other lady have been filming her and mocking her in the first place? Also No. They’re both in the wrong here but the woman recording has a history of trying to instigate those kinds of incidents so she can make money. It’s not a stretch to believe if the woman put away her phone when she was asked to, the swipe would not have happened.

I actually got into a heated argument at my job with one of my more lefty coworkers when this was making the rounds. He SWORE that she was just evil and trying to get the poor black woman killed, but I tried to explain that it is OBVIOUS that the woman had mental problems, and was likely autistic. I take care of my almost 30 year old autistic brother, and have my entire adult life, and whenever he gets scared or confused or overwhelmed, even in situations that all of us would consider minor at most, hE CAN and HAS had these exact kinds of breakdowns, of course I'm always there to calm him down, and explain to everyone that he won't hurt anybody even though he is a big guy, so he has never been in THIS situation. But I saw the video and knew immediately. That woman WAS my brother. That is what would happen if my brother was out alone without me. Of course my lefty coworker just said I was making things up, and was playing defense for racists.

It was always obvious that this girl is having a breakdown, clearly has a mental disorder. It's not a joke and it's nothing to be recording while laughing. People with disorders like autism can be very high-functioning, acting for all the world like they're just "normal" people. They just are easily overdtimulated by things normal people take for granted, crowds, lots of noise, strong smells, bright colors, even uncomfortable temperatures. The vast majority of high-functioning autistic people will NOT react in a way that endangers themselves or others, they will react exactly as this woman did: venting her raw emotions like a child would, trying to ground herself (lying on the floor is very common for autistic children having meltdowns, not sure if it's the same for adults, but it's a weird self soothing behavior of sorts), trying to withdraw into herself and get AWAY from the thing stressing her out.
I have high-functioning autism, and while I'm fully aware enough even during my most severe panic attacks to NEVER harm anyone else or do anything reckless, the difference IS like night and day in my demeanor when I've hit that threshold of stress; it's like my train of thought just utterly breaks down, and even though I'm aware of it, I can't just pull it together so easily.

My adult daughter has moderate autism and has tantrums like this. Fun fact: nearly all the people/students who triggered her breakdowns in school were black. My daughter told me they would touch her, push her, talk loudly/yell, even strong smells and those are her triggers.
