I can explain. The headboard and signs were made by separate individuals. The sign is 1981-2022 as that is the build date, but the headboard is 1983 as that's when they entered service. (Two years dispute with ASLEF over DOO). So one is going off their physical age, one off their service life. Both are accurate dates.
Let's try getting the fact out unless I'm mistaken. British Railways, especially Greater Anglia, hated Class 317s because if they did not, they would have kept some whole units for the sake of preservation. As an alternative, they could have just sent them to museums across the UK.
Maybe Class 317s could be ideal to operate in and around Glasgow if ScotRail were to inherit them. The Class 317 were the best reliable trains used on the West Anglia main line and on the Great Northern routes.
Me and several enthusiasts want there to be a farewell tour that would not only do the West Anglia Mainline but also the Great Eastern, the East Coast the Midland and the LTSR but the driver I spoke to seemed highly doubtful.
Damn I will miss these trains, they are my childhood. I remember taking them from Royston to Stevenage back in the First Capital Connect days. Farewell
End of the road for the MK3 EMU "box" classes (Class 317, 318 and 455). First the Southern 455s in May, now Anglia 317s. What about SWR's 455s and Scotrail's 318s?
From the early 80s. They became increasingly difficult to maintain and get spares for. The 314 (sister unit operating in Glasgow/Strathclyde) went out of service a few years ago for exactly the same reasons. They were a great regional electric train.
These aren’t actually sister units to the 314 - the 314s were PEPs, so had a massive amount in common with the recently retired Class 315s as well as the Class 313. It's about time they went they were falling apart and no spares. They were getting unreliable and slow. Time for faster quicker acceleration fully air-conditioned trains and safer too in crash situations
ARE YOU KIDDING ME??! This came to me out of the blue, and this is one of my favourite EMUs, just because of their motor sound. 😭😭😭
Yeh. The best GA trains.
No, the time had come to say goodbye sadly
@@TheArkamedBat Best to ride on? Not really
Best to listen to? Maybe, but 379s exist
Better than 720s? Eh, not really

Awesome video!! The class 317 were the best reliable trains and it was my favourite! The class 317 are gone and I missed it so bad :-(
Great video, sad that one of my favourite trains are gone now
same its also one of my favourites 😢
Great video! Now the Class 315s have joined them as trains we no longer see on the network. Sad to see them go but they were feeling rather outdated.
3:53 it shedded tears when I heard that good old regenerator starting when the throttle was applied, and for the last time we will hear 😢

Grew up riding these and I’ll miss them

CLASS 317 FOR LIFE
First the 455s now the 317s what next the 315s I will miss these trains they were so nostalgic to me :(
Yh the 315s probably don't have long left since Crossrail will start running the whole length starting from October.
To simplify, most if not all BREL trains are slowly dissapearing

Why can’t they keep some old trains for back up
Why keep old trains for backup which outdated and difficult to obtain parts for? Just build more new trains.
