The good old days of photoshopping with light..... Now that you have pointed out I have kinda realised that it is a skill that has somehow slipped through the net since the arrival of digital photography.
Thanks for making a great video with crucial info. I remember looking for my first octa that would work with my speedlight. I had to open up that diffusion panel every time I needed to change settings because I was using my on camera flash as a trigger. So many great options out there at an affordable price point. Thanks for helping the growing photography community. 😎👊 I appreciate your work Miguel.
Great informative video. I have several but I have added Manny Ortiz’s Octobox. From another video I see you have it as well. I like the switch box because of the easy set up. The breaking down and setting up the larger profoto octobox can be maddening, especially the 4’. Do you have a video with you actually using Manny’s at a shoot? GREAT VIDEO! More please😄
Miguel, if you could only have one for general portrait, glamour and boudoir work....would you prefer a 36" Octobox (with double diffusion) or the new 36" Beauty Dish from Westcott (that has a deflector but only one layer of diffusion)?
Good question. I'd prefer to go with the octa personally. You can make skin look so much better with an octa across a wide spectrum of skin types. Then if you want harder light, just take off a layer of diffusion and you're good to go 📸
Great question. It all depends on your overall budget. Both cameras are fantastic, but you're going to want to pair them up with really good quality glass. If you can get those bodies and pair it up with something like the 35mm f/1.4GM lens it would be amazing for shooting talking head and b-roll. If you want to keep it affordable, check out the ZVE10 which is also great for UA-cam-centric videos.
I need help pls about octa size I am not sure to buy thr 80cm or 120cm I always shoot outdoors and its not so windy here I will use it with v1 speedlight
Got two Octo M’s from Westcott. While they are great, I’m not a fan of the shape of light in the eye. I much prefer the Manny beauty dish. Even though the Octo with double diffusion does soften the skin better.
Manny's dish is great too, but there's nothing like an octa in my opinion. Maybe one day they'll make an even bigger beauty dish, Miguel Quiles edition! 😂✌️
Hey Miguel, I need your professional opinion and please do not think I am critiquing your work I am just curious. Your image at 1:01 in your video. I see the shine from your light modifier on the tip of her nose and right underneath her bottom lip. Do you normally leave them in the final image or do you remove them. I am on a quest to find out what to do. I was told by a makeup artist that they put a makeup that helps produce this shine so it helps to shape/sculpt the look. And I have been removing it in my edits and was asked by the makeup artist why I did it. Me I said it looked distracting but I see a lot of professionals leaving it as you did. The client loved her images but the makeup artist seemed discouraged that I removed it. Am I doing this wrong? And please don’t think I am knocking your work I want to what is right for my clients. Thank you love LOVE love your work.
Great question! I think it's all a matter of taste, but to me I think it looks fine so long as it's not overpoweringly bright compared to the rest of the image. You can always ask the makeup artist to matte those areas a bit with makeup, or you can use a softer form of light. I try to avoid retouching it out since it rarely comes out the right way. Get it as close to correct as possible in camera. Hope that helps!
@@MiguelQuilesJr thanks so much for such a quick response. I will talk to the make up artist and really sit down and talk about her vision and my vision with the client and see if there’s a way like you said to reduce the shine. And in my previous images they weren’t overexposed but it was a lighter color make up she was using that some how to produce the shine when light hits it. And that’s what she told me and this wasn’t the first time I came across it while doing female portraits. I’m from a small town and not too familiar with make up artist and the types of make up.. But I wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something wrong that’s why I commented on your video. I value your opinion and it’s an honor that you replied back to help me. God bless you
with 8 foot ceilings, i'm always struggling to figure out how big is big enough. with standing headshots, i wonder if 48" octa is too large to boom. thanks for the effort and sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
Silver creates a lot more contrast, which means that you would either have to photograph someone with exceptional skin, or plan on doing a lot more retouching. It does come in handy when you're doing outdoor shoots and need more output, but white in general will be more useful.
Because neither of the 2 most common light sources (the Sun and Windows) are octagonal in shape the viewer’s eye/brain perceives an octagonal catchlight as somehow unnatural. This is why I moved to hexadecagonal (16 sides) modifiers and never looked back.

So I decided.. I want to shoot people and models. So I watched youtube videos and got a lot of opinions on the subject. I did not want to spend a lot of money in case I didn't like it or changed my mind. I already had 3 Flashpoint 600s and 70 degree magnum reflectors for outdoor sports. I made several mistakes because of ignorance. Mistake one. youtube persuaded me I needed a 7" octa, which I purchased but did not know it was not collapsible I thought they all were. I have high ceilings but it takes too long to put together and take apart and takes a chunk of space not a big problem but annoying if I have to move it to the other side of the room. I bought a 5 foot EZ lock Oct which was great. I had to decide between 36" and 48" Mistake 2 youtube convinced me I needed a 48" deep parabolic octa, which I got. The first time I shot was outside by myself it was a wind sail and I ended up using my reflector. So I was looking at a Glow EZ Lock Collapsible 34 Beauty Dish. It has two diffusion layers and a removable metal disk to reduce hot spot. Also comes in 42" Or a Glow EZ Lock Quick Octa Large Softbox 36". They are identical except one is octa and the other is round. You said you like oct but is that because of the shape or because it is double defused? I need something to take outside by myself. Do you prefer the octa because the octa reflection in the eye or is there other reasoning behind it?
Something to consider if needed. Great class also in umbrellas too.

Octas FTW!

A rectangle gives more options and is often easier to fit in smaller spaces.
those results earned you my subscribe and bell button!
You sir are a true MVP! Thank you and welcome! 😀📸

Great explanation! So helpful!
Great Video!!
Thanks Miguel!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you, but how do you focus ? When i set to F8 and 1/250 it's too dark to focus ? Should i use a studio light ? 😊
Thanks! What camera and trigger are you using?
Just a new subscriber here..kindly make a video on how to connect trigger with the octabox by shooting manual
Would you recommend the a7S III or the a7 IV for someone looking to start a UA-cam channel?

Cool video man!!!
Thanks for watching!
Do you calibrate your screen before every shoot?
I typically do it once a month, or whenever my screen reminds me to do it.
@@MiguelQuilesJr thanks. And do you use color checker as well-for every shoot?

Basics of lighting. How bigger ; how softer the light is. Downside ; lack of contrast and boring , sometimes.
Why a white and not a silver one?
Silver creates a lot more contrast, which means that you would either have to photograph someone with exceptional skin, or plan on doing a lot more retouching. It does come in handy when you're doing outdoor shoots and need more output, but white in general will be more useful.
Surely those couple images have been retouched and are not straight out of camera?
Surely they have, as I shoot entirely in RAW.
I have to know. Is this a LOTR AND a Nas reference in one video?!
Good catch!! 😂

I don't have assistant, I use umbrella
Or just bring closer the light modifier you have.
Still depends on the size of the modifier but sure, it helps 📸
we transfer is a poor software when ever i use it with my ipad and connecy with pc its always freeze while sending a huge image
