The reason the barrier closes at least a couple of minutes before a train arrives is because, after the barriers are closed, the crossing has to be checked (usually remotely by camera I think) to make sure it's clear, then the train can be given a green light to continue over the crossing. If the crossing isn't clear, the train needs enough time to stop before the crossing.
Thank you for the details, it's obviously for a reason. It's either delaying the trains' crossing to let the traffic flow or letting the traffic stuck to let the trains pass. I wish there was an easy solution... But I still can't make any sense of pedestrians waiting for 6 minutes and not using the overcrossing :)
Trying to recall from when I worked for Network Rail, the minimum time should be two minutes between the barriers lowering and a train passing. This increases where the speed of the trains increases - some are about 5 minutes...
