As an interesting note, if you put the photo in light room or something and up the exposure, you can see some stars where captured as well.

Great job, Destin!!! Your picture came out perfect! 👏👏👏🤓
I love your enthusiasm and your video was a joy to watch! Your photo showing all phases of the eclipse looks worthy of winning an award. You really should enter it into a photography contest! Also it helps that you made UA-cam videos that definitively prove you captured the image using a camera and it's not photoshopped or created using AI.

    Destin,
As an avid film photographer that came from digital and missed out on my late uncles knowledge of decades, worth the film, photography knowledge I really enjoy everything you do and put out there. I develop all my film in my bathroom. I scan multiple ways as well as looking into modifying cameras from , really awesome engineers who have made amazing things so that we could bring back things such as Polaroids to the RZ 67 for example. I enjoyed your series that you did at the Kodak factory. I thought that was amazing and I am very impressed with your ability to get all of this done, especially on a piece of slide film, knowing how finicky they are. Thanks for everything and I’m looking forward to always seeing your content. If you ever find yourself in the central North Carolina area you’re more than welcome to swing through for some fun and science. Macro(6-7mm on one 35mm slide) on film is hard and I’m working on that but would love to show you some things in progress. Keep at it. -ae

What made me emotional isn't just the beauty of the image, but also the whole process of how you got there and the people along the way that each in their way contributed to this amazing photo.
Gives me faith in humanity and that we'll eventually be able to overcome our differences to do/make awesome stuff while being respectful and caring to each other.

I teared up in 2017 during the eclipse, but i chalked it up to never seeing such a thing before. I was totally caught off guard when i teared up again during this eclipse. It it's so beautiful.
Thank you for making the print available. I love the rotated print - and would prefer that, but I'll take the square format print. (Ordered - thank you!!!)
Also, excellent choice shooting in medium format. That is a really nice camera body - nice glass and as you found you have lots of options for interesting multi-exposure photography.

Destin, Thanks so much for offering this to non-Patrons. I (47m) was not shy about my emotions watching the revealing of the photo and am thrilled to be able to add it to my office wall - ordered a metal one for myself. And, because I chose poorly and was just north and east of Buffalo w/ my niece (7) for a VERY cloudy eclipse I also ordered a paper 12x12 for her to hang in her bedroom. She was very upset that we didn't get a decent view and her brother (who was further south and west of us with my BIL) did, but I will forever remember the experience with her and my sister. Your channel has inspired a number of gifts to my nieces and nephew over the years and they're turning out to be proper science/space nerds like me. All the best to you and your family.

I have a suggestion for anyone trying to figure out the mystery objects. (I believe they are satellites, but have no idea which ones.)
If you use trig to figure out how far away they are from the camera, keep in mind that's NOT the altitude above ground unless the sun was directly overhead. The satellite's altitude above ground will be less than its distance from the camera.

Destin, I'm a bit confused. How can the prints be available in Spain and Latvia and not in the rest of the European Union ?
Both Spain and Latvia are members of the EU and are therefore part of the same internal market.
If you have a company print those in Spain or Latvia it should not be a big deal for them to ship to the rest of the EU (maybe a bit higher shipping cost, due to distance, but that's all)

I printed the full image on letter paper (8.5"x11", the image ended up 7.75"x10.26"), but it doesn't look nearly as striking as the long poster. I think I need to have a go at cropping it and printing it over a couple of sheets to make a long poster version (or maybe see if I can find some 8.5"x14" paper to print it on instead).

Thanks Destin, for making this available. During the eclipse, i wondered how i can document (scrapbook) the progression.. and yes i do have photos, but this is a really cool way to document the 4 hours and 23 minutes of totality, (central Texas) which by the way, was not long enough to oooh and awe over the whole event.. 3+ months after the fact, is when i found this.. I'm not a subscriber to your channel, but i know your out there, and occasionally binge watch your channel.. just found out about your second channel. Also love NDQ.. i listen to those every time. Edit: oh, nice! The resolution is enough for huge posters!
What's the actual resolution of the file(s) on patreon? You should really give that information. Seeing as how you captured it on medium format film it seems to me that it should be suitable for huge posters. I don't know if your digital scans would be suitable for that, but surely making huge prints from the film itself would work very well. A little 12" copy seems like a waste. 12 feet and now you're talking.

This is a spectacular photo and it was amazing to see the process of making it. I am VERY tempted to try and get the metal version, however I will probably only be able to get the paper version.
On a side note, the technical achievement of this photograph is amazing! I shoot an RB67 (very similar to the RZ67), with 120/220. However it is almost always B&W I make from old areal film stocks that I cut down and roll myself. The few rolls of 120 color and slide are saved for very special occasions, as the cost is very high per shot. And I can honestly say, I would have been very hesitant to try to take a picture like that.
Honestly, this makes me want to break out a roll of color film and just go shoot, even if the cost is higher. Although the Velvia 50 in the freezer will definitely be saved for something extremely special. I doubt I’ll get anything like Bliss, but I’m gonna try!

Hey Destin, A couple of things… First, from the other video, all the old 35mm cameras from back in the day that I am familiar with (manual wind) had a button on the bottom that if you hold it in while winding, it won’t advance the film. This was for double exposures. Also, did you notice that the frame number on the film is 42? (Are you familiar with Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?) It doesn’t appear to show on the print!

its a shame the photo is slightly out of focus, also in your main video you said you couldn't find a camera to do double exposure but almost any manual SLR can do it with "the little button on the bottom" hack hold it down while holding the spool at the same time as advancing the camera. I used this method during the 2017 solar eclipse with my Minolta srt-101, you also said in that video that you are the only one to do this in 30 years like this is a big deal but I know few people who did it (myself included) on one frame of 35mm in 2017.

My sister and I both say the 2017 eclipse shot was like our roman empire thing we thought about constantly. With you also being the reason I got into shooting film, I can confidently say this photo has replaced the one from 2017. This year since we happened to live in the totality, my sister and I both took photos and it was such an amazing experience. multiple times during it we talked wondering what you had planned because we knew it would be special, and my god it was! I will definitely be getting those metal prints

I’m curious why you only make the photo 12”x12”. I would think that with a photo on film that large you could make it much larger unless, it is too grainy due to the film speed. I would definitely buy a larger one if it was available. Fantastic video by the way. I watched it again with my father who thought it was great and he said, he seems like a really nice guy. I replied I think so too and we need more people in this world like him. Keep up the great work!!!

@SmarterEveryDay2, Destin, I thought I was going to get to see the eclipse from my home, since I live in the path of totality near Syracuse, NY. Of course, being near Syracuse meant it was solid overcast. Even for all that, I was on a hill and able to see the surrounding area pretty well. I don't know if it was my eyes seeing what they wanted to see, but it seemed like I could see the totality shadow approaching as it darkened the clouds in its path. It was difficult to see, because (of course) it didn't have a sharp edge, but I was able to see it none the less. Even though the sun or moon never made an appearance, they still made an incredible impression! Does this seem like it's in the realm of possibility?

I wish I could become a Patron. There are a few UA-camrs that I wish I could contribute to. I am unable to. I can barley afford my mortgage. But I share all the videos to try and contribute to the community. This seems like a great community. You are great.

Destin - I should also thank you for pointing out the Solar Eclipse Timer app. I used it in 2017 in Idaho and this year at the house a bunch of folks I was staying with, two of us had the app going during the eclipse.

Still can't get over how good that photo is and how much joy there was in making it. Would it be possible to get another video going deeper on the technical details of how you did it? How did you calculate the exposure schedule for the multiple images? What filters and other settings did you use? What other little challenges did you have to overcome to get it right when it really mattered? This is something I'd really like to try myself someday (Iceland and Spain/Morocco both coming up in the next few years!) so any insights on how to do it well would be amazing!

I just received my order over here in Europe and I have to say it was extremely well packaged (without actually creating way too much trash).

I identified with the comment about being emotional seeing how you prioritized kissing your wife and having a special moment with your family.

Destin, your wording on the website is poor. "I captured the full eclipse on one exposure of film!" is a fundamentally incorrect statement. I can easily count 21 exposures. It is one frame, or one piece of film, but it is not one exposure.

Someone please explain something...I'm confused. If the moon's path was from lower right to upper left, then why do I need to "read" each of the exposures from left to right for it to reflect how the moon eclipsed the sun? The angle of the moon's path looks correct (lower right to upper left) but the path of the exposures seem to be transposed. In other words, I'm expecting to see the image for C1 in the lower right corner instead of the upper left. Gorgeous photo by the way!

You said in your last video passionate people are interesting, well you are also the subject in that quote. That is what keeps us coming back. Your passions are all ours in some interconnected way. Sometimes like your last video we connect emotionally with not only the subject but also the people. Keep being passionate and I’ll continue being interested.

Hey Destin! the digital prints look great, but if there's any way to do an optical print from the original slide, there would be so much more connection to the actual event. The photons from the eclipse that made the slide would be physically helping other photons make the prints. It would just make it a deeper connection to the actual eclipse I think!

I think it would be really cool to get the paper version and build a shadow/light-box and backlight the print.
