Hi friends! Thank you for watching! Incase you are interested, I made a follow-up video where I test out these supplies: ua-cam.com/video/HAUC0_Rsa8Q/v-deo.html
Thank you for watching, Eileen!! It’s dangerous out here 😂 I’m so tempted to get a Starbucks every time I go there!! Now I know what to tell folks to get me for my next birthday: Starbucks gift card and a blick gift card! Done!
@@FionaCArt That would be a perfect combo for me! I miss Blick's when I'm in NYC or Detroit. I just miss wandering around an art store, period. I love Stabilo pens, they're great. I believe the Canson XL is their lower quality/student grade but I don't find that much difference. Of course the more professional line is their Heritage but I don't think that comes in a sketchbook.
I love a good art supply or stationary store wander too. I haven’t used Stabilo in YEARS! I’m excited to try them again. I find the canson XL works well for me, but if I do wanna do professional grade I typically go Arches (loveeeee arches!!)
Not sure if anyone answered you, but the difference in price between the Canson XL Watercolor and the Canson Montval is that the Montval has better sizing that allows for more wet on wet techniques without warping profusely. Montval is my go to cheaper paper for that reason. Of course, I might have just had bad luck with the XL paper. Your mileage will vary depending on technique.
Yeah I haven’t gone too heavily with wet techniques on the XL. It takes a thin layer of acrylic, watercolour and ink just fine by me. But the Montval has been nice and can take a bit more in my opinion. Thank you for watching and for the educational comment :)
I had a whole conversation with the store manager about that lol I said “Looks like this will have heavy fumes” and she said “I didn’t really notice but my boyfriend told me to open a window while working with it” LOL In regards to pricing, blick definitely has some good deals - especially when you buy in multiples. I was tempted to buy 2 large canvas’ and spend it all, but that wouldn’t have made for a very interesting video 😂 Thank you for watching tho!! Appreciate it, darling! 🥰🥰🥰
My friend took me to BLICK for the first time in YEARS this weekend and I was like a kid in a candy store lol. Thank the gods I had a little list of supplies I wanted so I wouldn't go too overboard. I got a Paint Puck for my paint jars (should have bought 2 but I'm happy with the 1), I got some Manuscript shimmer inks, some refills for my mono zero eraser, a few Albrect Durer watercolor pencils, a Daniel Smith dot card, and a 37ml tube of WN Designers Gouache in Zinc White. My friend got some spray paint and pastels. I wanted to get a set of Finetec watercolors but I had to restrain myself lol. Next time though X3
Wow! You got a really good haul - the blick nearby you just be a big one 😊 You have more willpower than me tho because even if I bring a list I end out convincing myself I need more 😂 Thanks for watching and enjoy your new supplies!
New to your channel. Loved seeing your haul and a different Blicks, than mine. It's interesting to see how another is laid out. Thank you for the suggestion of looking for value packs!!! Thank you also for your honesty about brushes. I bought a cheap pack at Michaels because I couldn't afford individual ones. Now I don't feel like a lesser artist. I'd love to try painting on wood panels someday. Looks like fun.
Welcome to my channel and thank you so much for watching 💕😊 Never feel lesser due to ANY art supplies please!! Your work is important no matter what. You should definitely try out wood panel sometime - it’s really different from canvas but a lot of fun 😊
for only 70 subs this is great content! im just trying to pick up paint/drawing as a passtime since I'm currently disabled at home. I don't usually indulge too much in any art communities but you deserve a follow
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching! ❤️ I do plan more art supply videos, visiting art exhibits, tips for artists and some studio vlogs of me creating :) Hope you enjoy it!
Have tried all types of watercolor paper, including the "best" and most expensive like Arches, the best is Canson Mon..., next is Canson XL. The paint relationship to the paper of Canson, for color, texture, and water is the best. Don't let any "high brow" artist tell you about your choice in art supplies whether paper, paints, brushes, etc. What works for you *works* and the makers of art supplies know that *all* art supplies are marked up 1000 percent *or more* of cost-to-make. (Case in point Daniel Smith paints and the recient eye-opening truth of their paints.) Also the "light fast" ploy is a bunch of crock. None of it is really light fast. Try it yourself. Swatch and put it in the sun. The way they are making paints now-a-days *make the paints fugitive* hence lots of artist are making their own paints now, or are turning to quality handmade paints (the producers of these handmade paints are artist in their own right). GOD BLESS.
Hi Miriam! Thank you so much for watching! And PREACH! I definitely agree that whatever works for you and your work is fine! In regards to light fast, I have done tests and you’re correct when you say nothing is 100% lightfast. But there are some paints and inks that do work better than others when exposed to UV. Of course, anything will eventually fade but I’ve had things fade after 1 year VS 10 years. Also, love the idea of artists making their own paints - I’d love to try that one day :) Stay well and stay inspired!
Ah! I’m in NJ too!! And I’ve been wanting to go to blick for like the past 6 months and haven’t made it up there. Just did an online order as a patch, and yeah $100 gets you a handful of paint pens and brushes and like 1 paint set, lol
And people wonder why artwork costs so much 😂 It’s diabolical how much supplies cost, but blick does have a great selection and offer decent discounts. Thanks for watching 💕
Just found your channel!! I love your channel so far!! I feel slightly ashamed as an artist, I didn't even know about Blick haha. I'm super excited to binge your videos ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words! Don’t feel ashamed! There’s SO MANY art supply stores and sometimes it’s easier to just shop local. If you want to buy from blick online their website is: www.dickblick.com Sometimes they email good deals, but I try to resist that 😂 Hope you enjoy my other non-haul videos as well 💕 Have a lovely weekend!
Thanks for sharing your haul! I also use the Canson XL watercolor paper, but it is not a high grade watercolor paper, thus the lower cost. I have had it pill on me if it gets too wet or you rub too much. I’ve also found that my watercolors don’t spread out in quite the same way as with 100% cotton. But it’s still a good value and will take a decent amount of water....just not a lot. I also have the Canson Montval WC Artist Series wire bound 5.5 x 8.5. While it likely has some cotton in it, it is not 100% cotton or it would say prominently on the cover, but it is still a very good paper. For all-around great quality general purpose paper, I like the Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media paper that is sold in the wire bound notebooks. Like all natural fibers, cotton is expensive and it is the gold standard for watercolor artists. I just try to use my small stash of it for my best and more serious works and my best quality artist grade paints on it too...original art that I may be selling or exhibiting (which aim still hoping to do in the near future.)😊
Hi Nancy! Thank you for watching and sharing your knowledge :) it’s always a battle for us artists on value VS quality! I will have to give that strathmore mixed media paper a shot that you mentioned! While I prefer to work with acrylics or Bombay inks instead of watercolour, it sounds like it could handle that! Stay well and stay inspired, friend!
A good cheap watercolor paper is Bee watercolor paper! You get 30 sheets, 100% cotton, 300gsm, and it has a nice texture! I recommend it to all new people for nicer prints. I definitely recommend the Canson XL to people to messing around, mostly because you can find it for buy one get one half off at Michael's occasionally. 🥰
I definitely prefer the heavy body over the Basics for pigment load. I think Basic is their student level and the Heavy Body is their professional grade.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I’m excited to see if their version of heavy body is still as malleable for me! Nothing beats golden medium as far as professional quality for me, but I’m open to be proven wrong 😊
Nice!! :) it’s a good one right?! I prefer canvas at the moment but if you had asked me 4 years ago I would’ve said wood panel hands down 😂 how about you?
yo, I really like the editing style of your vid, could you reply and say where that particular blick store is located? I live in NJ to, and I cant find a ton of art stores near me, but that one looks great
Apparently not? When I googled it, it said “Canson Montval is a fine quality, acid-free, natural white, mildew resistant student watercolor paper. Prized for its texture and resistance to repeated washing, this Cold Press paper is suitable for all wet media techniques, including watercolor, gouache, wash, and acrylic painting.” Surprised to see its student too. 🤷♀️

My biggest worry with cheaper stuff is the light fastness honestly. Because I’ve seen my work 10 years later and it’s lost all its color saturation 😬 But I’ve sold works on canson “school grade” paper and it keeps archival so I’m cool with saving that wee bit money 🤷♀️
