Adding a window to the cottage would be great, as would reinstalling the door to the walled garden. Something tells me you will become very proficient with stone and brick work over the course of this renovation. The rumpus room is a great idea-your outbuildings offer so many opportunities for your (plural) abundant creativity! I hope each of you have your own notebook for ideas, sketches, colors, fabric and so forth. Ideas need to be nurtured! Thanks for another glimpse of life in France! 🇫🇷
P.S. I see no evidence of failure!

I'm certain that with a project as mammoth as yours one could have moments that feel like failure. My Granny always said, "You can't swallow an elephant whole, but you can get there one bite at a time." I hope you feel encouraged by all you have accomplished and can have plenty of moments along the journey to rest and relish in those grand achievements. ❤

I renovated a cottage in France many years ago and had friends who kept their stone walls and regretted it. However you seal it, they are dust catchers and it's months of hard work drilling out the old cement to replace with a lime mix. I know plasterboard is not as pretty, but you can insulate it and it provides a straight surface for kitchen units/worktops or shelves and keeps the room lighter. Obviously just my opinion but it comes from experience. Whatever you choose though, am sure you will make it work. Really enjoyed tonight's video.

Questions: Do you eat the onion greens? Does Lincoln ever miss his desk job? Do you have any birds of prey, and who are your most frequent avian visitors? Lastly what are your allee, trees?
For lighting downstairs in the cottage, if you leave a gap upstairs in the floor across one wall, then you get sunlight downstairs, and airflow. You could also do part if privacy is an issue, or fill it with glass block or something. I've seen it done and it's such a cool feature. Really works!

Well you have had a very busy start to the summer and the rains didn't help. In spite of it all everything is still providing fruits and vegetables.
With all the rain have you thought about some sort of catchment system for those times that it doesn't rain?

Painting the walls and ceiling white will make it so much lighter. It’s like a magic trick, you will be pleasantly suprised. When we built an extension on the back ( north side)of our stone house in the Morbihan we painted the back stone wall with natural white limewash ( we bought it from a paint company in Dorset,uk) It looked so nice, brought out the rough natural undulating texture of the stone but gave a nice light matt clean finish. I highly recommend.

I am in awe of this amazing building with all of its potential. What a wonderful purchase you made. I think that the stone wall in the kitchen would be beautiful in the kitchen and would look so good with the exposed beams if you can do that. A window would be amazing as well. Whatever you do Amanda and Lincoln....it will be great!! Love your journey!!

  • @hanwalker7408

I think a window would add so much to the cottage. We also have very thick stone walls and when converting the old, dark welly room into our kitchen we added as many windows as the local authority planners allowed. A great piece of advice from our builder friend is to always go for window openings which are angled and are bigger on the inside as this brings in more light. One of the kitchen walls is much lower on one side of the house and for damp reasons we dug out a channel between the house and the ground and supported it with stone - very effective and no sign of damp. Don't let the donkeys eat the ragwort as it could make them very ill

    • @marshawargo7238

Regarding the apples; when I lived in Florida, I'd call a monastary and tell them if they want my oranges, come and take them. They did and they picked them. Not sure if there are any organizations like that in your area. The one stone wall in the cottage would look really nice. I'd suggest pointing it or something so that is does not flake dust onto the floor.

If I may ask...Lincoln mentioned injecting concrete into that stone wall...I have always heard that you want to use a lime mix with stone and not concrete because concrete will trap any moisture that finds its way in. I am amazed at how much you guys have accomplished. Very very nice. But, my favorite is the long tree-lined driveway leading up to the Chateau. Keep up the good work.

Definitely put a window in that wall of the cottage. A view of the walled garden would be gorgeous! It would be lovely to have access to the garden there, if possible, even with the difference in ground level. Perhaps a pair of French windows that are above the floor level but even with the garden ground level? Then you could open them, step up, and walk into the garden :)
Take your time. It's not worth getting the projects done if you're worn out or anxious about it. This is not a race!

I never tire of watching vlogs of your beautiful property. Your hydrangeas are stunning as is the Sandberg wallpaper which you inspired me to get so it's now in one bedroom of our house in the Dordogne... thank you!

I think you do a fantastic job, especially it's usually just the two of you. Don't forget once upon a time there would have been a team of people keeping this place running.

I see no failure. You weed and they come back immediately. Beautiful photography. So lush as I know of 4 wildfires in Colorado right now.

YES for a window or windows in the cottage! My psyche cannot get enough natural sunlight to turn my mood from sad to glad!

12:30 I have one stone wall in my house that I was able to keep open like this because it was an interior wall that didn't need to be insulated. It's definitely a lovely feature.
That said, isn't this the wall against which you'll be putting your kitchen cabinets? I might consider furring it out using the metal rails and placo-platre, just from the floor up to the top of your wall cabinets, leaving the stonework above exposed to view. This would give you a much more regular surface against which to mount your cabinets. And since the cabinets are going to hide the stone anyway, you won't be losing any of the stone wall charm.
If you're concerned about things being too dark, you can also consider giving the rough stone a very thin coat of lime plaster, almost like paint. I actually did that on the lower half of my wall, while leaving the upper half totally exposed. You can still see the texture of the stone wall through the thin lime wash, but it reflects light beautifully.
