I think when it comes to eco shopping, you just have to do the best you can. Something is better than nothing and makes a difference. I have dramatically reduced the amount of fruit, veg and meat I buy from the supermarkets because of the plastic and instead use my local greengrocer who sells nearly everything loose and local butcher who uses paper to wrap the meat which I can recycle easily. It is a bit more expensive but I have found the quality and how long it lasts is much better. My black bin waste has dropped by at least half and I take that as a win. I still have a ways to go but it’s progress. Thanks for the great video Vivi. Maybe you should make a ‘Vivi’s tried and true simple recipes’ as an ebook? All your recipes sound delicious! 😋 xx
I would love to be able to do this!! I live very, very rurally and it isn’t cost effective to use the car so end up doing online shopping!!
I can’t find a decent butcher near me since our local one closed.
I cook a whole batch of chick peas, then weigh them out in 100 gram portions to freeze. Same with barley, rice, green beans, black and white beans. Then when making a batch of soup or a stir-fry, it is very quick because the dense foods are already ( or partially) cooked already.
Hi Vivi, at most of the large supermarkets you can take the plastic back, they have either special bins or roll pallets that you put it into, I'm not sure about the smaller shops but might be worth asking them, enjoy making all that lovely food xx
I’d love to see you do a Meals of the week video once a week with your produce. Be so handy to see how you feed yourself on such a small budget. Lots of lovely vegetables. ❤
Cheers lovely. If you look at my 'In the Kitchen' playlist the most recent 8 videos were following my eating for a week. 😊
The angle of the courgette behind Vivi's head! 😂😂😂😂😂
Our local small Coop will take soft plastic for recycling. We are lucky to have a zero waste shop in the village, fruit and vegetables mostly locally grown. They also have local bread and pastries. I can buy rice, pasta etc,and refill cleaning stuff. It is more expensive but if you worry about the waste it’s worth it.
I’ve found, over the years, that myself, hub, family and friends all prefer easy simple meals. You can have marvelous fun meals with just about any ingredients. You are VERY creative Vivi.
We take soft plastics and glass to our town's big tescos with recycling bins (its something we do roughly every 2 weeks). Failing that Vivi put in an envelope without a stamp and post it back to them! The mustard will be okay in the cupboard.
I have been growing lettuce and spinach at home for years. I have 5 small washing tubs full of greenery all year round. Very simple, requires little space and soil and always grows spinach even in winter. I started doing this years ago because it was always eaten by snails in my garden. This year, for the first time, a small harvest of "peppers" (not the spicy peppers but the large red ones here in the Netherlands, they are called Paprika's).
Grown five plants in the windowsill since February and have already eaten 3 peppers from them. This year only the zucchini and tomatoes in my tiny garden are going outside in pots (the garden is only 3 x 4 meters but faces south).
Next year I will sacrifice 1 bedroom on the south (much too hot to sleep there in summer) and see if I can grow more there in front of the window. Just give it a try and if it doesn't work, well then it goes into the compost bin and I have nice potting soil for the garden again :-)
Yay!
Brilliant!
If you were in Singapore all the “ rubbish” would go to the High Energy Low Emissions facility which makes electricity, the gases are extracted and reused, the neutralised ash goes to landfill and high rise buildings go on top.
Consider dried mustard too if freezer doesn't work. It's more expensive, but keeps longer. I never eat within the 4 weeks, but I do have a fridge.
I agree shopping is hard. Do your best with the resources you have and move on. Maybe consider olio app? Rescuing food that will be thrown out is one of the best things you can do.
I can't even hear what you are saying because I am tranfixed on your gorgeous dress/tunic/caftan....oooh la la....it is magnificent! You are stunning😊
Aww, thank you lovely. 😊
Wow! Lidl is so affordable! I agree about the packaging and organics. Ugh. Soon, you'll be growing what you need to grow in your new home. I wish I could grow as much but it's so hot here that everything does wonderfully in spring and then when we get triple digits, everything stops producing. However, after our heat waves I can get tomatoes through Christmas and green bell peppers through January. Then it will get chilly here in California and it'll pick back up in March.
I loved seeing your shopping. 👍
Great video, I love your home made chiller/fridge. Brilliant idea. I also despair at the plastic waste. Luckily my supermarket has a recycling collection point for returning plastic. Hopefully if we return lots they will think again about using so much 👏
Hi Vivi
You can take soft plastic to various shops
Tesco is one of them
Good shop
I managed to spend £10 this week for my family of 2and 4 three times a week
Not bad do you think
Myself and my husband walk about 5miles each day scouring around for the best deals
Plenty to be had
Just got to do the leg work
Plus it keeps us extremely fit
Take care vivi xx❤️❤️❤️❤️
That's great......sadly my legs won't do 1 mile, never mind 5! 😉
Bless you once I could hardly cross a road with my back but the more I walked the better it became and now I never sit down I’ve so turned a massive corner xx❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Viv. Enjoyed your video. I’m catching up after missing a few. I spend £50 a week on my food, toiletries and other bits and bobs I eat very well. Fresh produce, meat , chicken, fish etc. I always manage to slip in a bottle of Prosecco! I shop at Aldi and alternate with Waitrose. These are my two local supermarkets. I don’t buy packaged goods, cook from scratch and buy supermarket brands. Works perfectly for me…..long may it last! Sending best wishes.
Yay, good stuff lovely. 😊
Loved the first picture of your basket with all the fresh goodies in it. Wonderful shopping, and I will not bore you with how much you got for your money - oops, just did! 😆 I have been shopping today as well, I bought a squash today, it is not a staple in my household, but I remembered you when I picked it up today. I need to go back and see the soups Vivi makes with these. I agree about the packaging. I bought 1 (!) big tomato, bananas, kiwis, the squash and 1 onion without plastic packaging. The store have brown paper bags you can fill with a strip of plastic to see what it is in them. You are also welcome to bring your own bags. I buy organic sometimes, when I can, would love to buy more, especially since my brother is an organic farmer.
Hi Vivi check your local supermarkets for recycling plastic packaging from your fruit and veg. In my town Tesco, Sainsbury and Aldi all have a container to put them in.
All of mine are the mini versions and don't do recycling sadly.
Great shop, Vivi. I can/bottle my own garbonzo and other beans to have them on the shelf. It's a big production sometimes but I can/bottle other things, so have the setup to easily do it. I make my own homemade baking mixes, etc too. It started as being more cost effective, better quality, and I can make it diabetic friendly, but a good side benefit is hopefully using less packaging overall vs store bought/processed as I am reusing the jars and use less packaging when buying in bulk. Like everything, you have to not assume and constantly check your prices and cost.
I dont know about where you live, but where i am, Tesco has a soft plastic bin outside their store which they take any type of bags and wrappings to send away for recycling xxx
Not where I am, sadly.
Oh Vivi, I wish you lived closer, I would give you some of my tomatoes courgettes and french beans, I have frozen enough beans for the winter, will be freezing tomatoes soon. Take care Xx
Yay for a fab harvest! 😊
I am lucky where I live in Scotland there is a community garden every week & a local greengrocer. Also zero waste shop for all the dried pulses etc. i do not like supermarkets where most stuff is wrapped in plastic.
Hear, hear. So great that you have those resources locally. 😊
Simple ingredients and simple recipes suit me just fine Vivi… hope to see a tasty salad video soon 😁
Can't wait to see if the recipe is ok as i love your recipes & i made the courgette & potato soup at the weekend & my daughter loved it so much she had 2 bowls xx
I'm so missing making this soup of Vivi's this year with our own courgettes (pesky slugs!!!) - I looked at the price of courgettes in our local shop and my jaw dropped!!! 😬😬
@@paulsavident I've been lucky with the slugs not attacking the courgettes x
Peanut butter toast is my favorite breakfast!!!! Well done on the shopping, Vivi!!!!
Ooooh, but it's a bit too good......one slice is never enough. 😉
@@WhatVivididnextThat’s why I always have two!!!😊
Yay for peanut butter !! I use the natural kind ; just peanuts , that’s it !
PB has been a part of my daily lunch for decades . I have it on honey- wheat toast , today with sliced banana.
Love to see your shopping and prices .
Oooo - those recipes sound great. I know what you mean. Some recipes call for stuff I’d only use for that particular recipe , annoying .
Your hair is very ‘fetching’ this way and your dress is lovely and summery cool -looking.
Dreary rain here today as well .
❤🦋🌈 xx
Love me a peanut butter and jam sandwich… and of course peanut butter on toast yummm
@@vickieharris1212 right Vickie !!
I also use jam or jelly for a change !!
❤️xx
I hear you on the packaging vs organic conundrum!
I've been going for organic as it also affects my health but I feel sad about all the plastic waste.
I'm not sure if they still do it but my local Lidl had recycling bins for people to leave their waste in. Some people unpackaged their stuff in the supermarket and didn't bring it home, some returned it on their next visit.
I wish my branch had that but, sadly, they don't.
I’ve got that ‘cooking on a bootstrap’. And I love it. The minestrone soup recipe is delicious. Like you I add what a I’ve got!
Mustard keeps really well in the cupboard ….good shopping trip.i keep spring onions in a jam jar with a little water in the bottom, same with celery..
I have started a small salad and veg garden this year. I am trying to record the cash value of the food I produce.Just sawed my second lot of lettuce, tomatoes are doing well about 50 on three plants growing well but not ready yet.Cabbage growing well, trimmed some of the outer leaves to use this week. Lifted garlic but harvest was poor. “
Lifted first potatoes and first few onions (thinned out a few) big enough to use. Started gathering blackberries. Tonight’s haul was just over 700grams. I will freeze these to use over winter.
Lovely! 😊
That’s probably why the previous owner took those books to the charity shop Vivi 😂😂. I am wondering if you have any kind of community garden nearby? You may be able to get organic, unwrapped produce from somewhere like that, otherwise a veg box scheme, but they tend to be expensive.
You look really pretty in that dress!
Thank you. 😊
That cup is beautiful ❤
Isn't it! A gorgeous gift that I treasure. 😊
Rice cakes with peanut butter and banana is my new go to I love it 😊
Good morning, Vivi!🌻🦋
Hello. 😊
Great vid Vivi, really enjoyed this ❤
In summer I shop at farmers markets for my veg every Sunday. Can’t beat the taste and typically less expensive than store bought. Of course I bring my own bags! Enjoy your new recipes Vivi. The peanut butter dressing sounds yummy.🌟❤️🥗
We used to have a market here but it disappeared......no idea why. Such a pity.
I am so grateful to Zero waste Liverpool.... I haven't bought food for over 2 weeks. They save so much good food going to landfill. I'm with you on the plastic...impossible to avoid. My general waste consists 99% plastic. Local council doesn't recycle as much as other authorities... ☹ Totally agree on food preparation, had no complaints about my cooking over the years but it has to be ready in 20 minutes, pan to gob!🤣
Hi Vivi. Maybe you could shredd the packaging and use it for your packaging material, at least it would recycled. Take care!
I keep mustard in a cupboard even after the jar has been opened . Never had any problems
You could put the bottoms of the green onions in water on your window sill and grow them for free
I just love these types of video Vivi. It's nice to see what others pay for groceries and how they use them up. I was just wondering if you plot friends would give you there extra produce once there available? We always have extra Zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes every year. It would be nice if they could share some with you if they have them. I know this year I am having so many problems with squash vine borer. Never had them before. So I am not getting very much zucchini, buttercup and spaghetti squash this year. Hopefully they don't get into my butternut squash. Looking forward to your next video. Thank you for sharing with us.
I think all my [plot friends are really struggling this year too. 😢
Vivi, for 3 of us (adults) including the toiletries and cleaning and paper products as well as cat food etc my shopping costs me around £120-£150 p/w it's risen so much. Admittedly that is buying the same things we always have , so I could ditch some branded things and definitely reduce it. But I honestly don't think I could reduce it down to £15 per person. I admire you lovely. Stay well and healthy 🐈⬛🖤
Hi Tesco and Aldi have a recycling bin for all that packaging, crisp bags and more
Sadly, my little branch doesn't.
I feel you on the issue of plastic packaging vs organic produce. Its so hard to find organic produce loose.
I so agree with all the packaging. It drives me crazy.
I have a jack Monroe book cooking with tin foods. Brilliant book.
I have many cook books, and i read them, and some i think what a waste of ink and then make my own version and enjoy new recipes that way.
If it looks to cheffing 👩🍳 then i adapt it the same as you do.
Thank you for keeping me company today. Hugs xx😊
My pleasure.....thanks for hanging out with me. 😊
Love Jack..I make her “hamburger patties” from beans often. Waaay less than the pre-packaged, commercial ones, probably 25% of that cost!
A lot of supermarkets recycle plastic packets including the small co-op near me
That's what I was going to suggest. I unpackage what plastic wrapped produce I can and leave it in the appropriate supermarket recycling bins before I leave. A lot of our supermarkets here have gone back to brown paper bags for people to select their own produce, which is fantastic!
Yes they have them in Aldi, waitrose and Tesco to recycle.
Went to M&S the other day and they had brown bags for loose veg…..yay! Put it all in one brown bag and weighed separately at the till 👏
Oh Vivi I’ve caught Norovirus in care home I work feeling dreadful, this will cheer me up.x
Get well soon lovely. x
Hello, I’ve only been enjoying your videos for several months now. I’m curious to know how long you have been a vegetarian. 🙂
Thank you. 😊 I've been veggie since my early teens.
You can also take your iwn containers to the supermarket and tip your items into them and leave them with the packaging to dispose of
I'm not sure if you have a thing called a farmers market. It is where people who grow veggies in their backyard and then come to a central location to sell to neighbors. You get vegetables grown in your area that taste like your home grown veggies.
There isn't one near me, sadly.
@@WhatVivididnext darn that would have help get home grown with bothering your knees.
I have froze regular mustard and it was just fine. Just my experience
Walnuts are brilliant! I like them with oatcakes for a snack.
Hi Vivi great video, a lot of the bigger supermarkets used to do a scheme where you could actually return your excess packaging to them. Heather
Not where I am, sadly.
Lovely update, Vivi. I put everything in the pot at once now. I used to do it in stages, but there's no difference in taste, and it saves me time. Everything I do is on the hob. We had a run of hot days last week, and I had a greek salad every day. I am so busy now I am retired I definitely don't know how I would fit work in 😅
Lol. That has been my experience too.
Enjoyed take care.
Gosh you do so amazingly on that amount each weekly . Take my hat off to you x
Vivi is BRILLIANT, and such an inspiration ❤
Packaging was a european directive long time since. I never could understand why this was introduced. Inspired by yourself, for the past 3 years i have grown my own veg so i tend not to buy supermarket veg unless im really pushed and its the packaging that puts me off!
I dont have a big or expensive set up just a few raised beds, im not a gardener, but ive managed to grow onions, shallots, courgettes, leeks, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and potatoes. I live in Scotland, so dont get the heat you get down south. Im saving up for a greenhouse. My garden isnt huge and it could be utilised and organised much better. However like yourself, i have various conditions that hold me back some days, but the days i can im out there enjoying every minute of my garden 😁 I just take things slowly and rest often. I picked some courgettes the other day that were like marrows so the soup pot went on. There is no better feeling than making food with home grown produce. My soup, courgette, onion, sprinkle of garlic granules, table spoon of vegetable bullion, enough water to cover and simmer till vegies are soft. Add a scoop of soft cheese like philidelphia and liquidise. It is lush 😊
Yay, good on you lovely.....this is fabulous! 😊❤
Canned beans and pulses are also good as you can obviously add the liquid from the can as well as the pulses... and a bit of peanut butter and some onions would be nice with some cumin. 👍👍 Sadly, we do not have the volume of beautiful orchards in the UK now to support pip fruit growing for the population - 80% of small orchards in England and Wales have been lost since 1900, and 60% of orchards overall have been lost in this time, including the large commercial ones. 🙄 "Oooh not melon - eugh... I don't want fruit..." Virtually wet myself laughing when you said this!!! 😂😂 Temp-ay is I think how you pronounce it. 👍👍
It's shocking and sad that so many of our orchards have gone. Hahaha....keep that fruit out of my meals!!!
@@WhatVivididnext indeed - if you look at 1860s maps for here this house and the one opposite were surrounded by orchards, almost down to the lottie. 🙄🙄

Loved this . Interesting the difference in cost between countries as those groceries would have cost so much more than 22 Canadian here in Canada . More than double !
You are luckier than us here in Australia. Our food is so much more expensive. For example I priced up some of the things you purchased. These prices are in Australian dollars. Those little blocks of cheese $4.70 each, Peanut butter $5.80, Dijon mustard $4.00, jar of Olives $6.00, Tins of chickpeas & Lentils $2.20 each. As you can see just those things are over the $25AU you spent on your whole shop. Things here are really insane. I frankly don't know how people with growing children can afford to feed them let alone clothe them and put them through school. As for the packaging on your fresh produce, have you thought about letting it be known down at the allotments that you would be interested in buying peoples excess. You could put up a notice even at the gate. You never know. As gardeners we all have gluts.
I was pricing things at Walmart here while Viv was taking them out of her basket (but no organic ever)...priced out 23.26 without sales tax..
With the awful growing year we've had here I doubt anyone will have a surplus of anything! 😢
@@WhatVivididnext Can I mail you some green beans ( harcourt verts?). We have so many, I’ve been freezing them. My husband says “ you can never have green beans too often”…not so much this year.
I agree about the packaging. Aldi and Lidl are the worst. Most of my local grocery stores sell items without packaging. What you say about vegetarian cookbooks is so true. I have been a vegetarian for 37 years and have seen some fancy cookbooks. Some of my favorites are by Rose Elliot, especially the Cheap and Easy cookbook.
Yay for Rose Elliot.....I think her Cheap and Easy was the first veggie cook book I bought when I left home. 😊
I don't buy tomatoes anymore, they're so tasteless.
There’s a difference in bin colours? 😂 totally different here. Love these videos, thanks Vivi 😊
I have gad breast cancer and desperate to retire from nursing. I have 95 oesion so should be able to. I am 58. The pension process is so confusing. Sorry its nothing to do with today's vlog but suppose it does as will be budgeting xx
I hope you can do it soon. x
Yes you can. I retired at 55 after 38 years. 95 pension. X
Can you go to occupational health and get your manager help.
There are recycling places at all the main supermarkets to take the '' do not recycle at home packaging , have fun
Mine, sadly, don't. 🥲
Have you considered a veg box delivery? It might reduce some packaging (though not all)?
It may be more expensive but I (amongst others probably) have a refer a friend code for Abel and Cole and Riverford that gives discount.
Others are available, and may be local. Or odd box (non organic) could be an option too? Just a thought.
An excellent thought.....sadly not possible here though as my front door opens straight onto the High street....any box left would be nicked in 2 seconds! 😉
Hi vivi for years I’ve been looking for British apples in the supermarket but no ? love the recipes lv Irene 😘 xx
Put green onions in water and the green tops keep growing.
I put green. Onions in water every time, keeps them fresh and they also keep growing so you end up with twice as much.
Can you buy tomatoes from the UK this time of year? In the US, at the big supermarkets, you have to look at the origin since so much comes from elsewhere year round. I have a few cherry toms from my small garden plot, but not enough to save this year. Our farmers markets are more expensive than the supermarket
Yes, UK toms are in season right now. 😊
My boyfriend worked at a waste recycling plant and all the red bins and yellow bins are mixed together anyway so what’s the point?
maybe we should all gather our packaging and dump it back at the supermarket, maybe that would force them to deal with the problem
Hear, hear!
Hi Vivi I like your hair
Thank you. 😊
Hi Vivi, thought you may be interested with a use for all that wrapping that gets you so, so angry! I'll let you do the research.. try looking up Eco Bricks. Plastic bottle stuffed with anything that won't degrade. I cut up everything, gets more in. Always thought would be good for schools using crisp packets, biscuit wrappers, tetra packs, (not always recycled) The completely full bottles can be used for walls, lashed together as stools, tables. Just let the imagination do the rest.
All you need are strong scissors and even stronger wrists, oh and a strong, long thin stick.
Hope your endeavours with your "cottage in the sky" are successful and you find your new home very soon. All the very best.
Thank you lovely, yes, I've seen seen those 'bricks'...but for me it doesn't solve the problem of these plastics being around for hundreds (poss thousands?) of years and slowly leeching into our water tables.... It's a dilemma!
My biggest gripe at so called chefs is when they cook budget meals. Buy a cheaper cut of meat, they say, this joint will cost so much and feed so many with variations, cook slowly in fan oven for 4 hours........... nooooooo if my fan oven goes on it has multiple stuff in it that's why I would always use tinned chick peas and other pulses unless you cook huge amounts at a time .
Exactly!
I’ve cooked dry beans (pulses) in the slow cooker before. I don’t have to watch so carefully.
