Chris J Exactly. Thanks for the stats. I'm a Bama fan but much respect to Spurrier and Florida. You know back in the 1960s Bear always said the team that was a sleeping giant was Florida.
As a Kentucky fan, I sure don't! He LOVED running the score up against us! Glad we FINALLY got some victories against Him at South Carolina, but that seemingly hardly counted. >_
Talked to a former player....a very prominent player on that team about this game. He said that Monday before this game DuBose had been told if they didnt win this game he was out. He said that the only time he saw DuBose intensify practices, hold players accountable and demand they put forth 100 percent was the week leading to this game. Said he was a total a hole that week and the players actually respected him. Said, after the LaTech loss, that season of 99 he stayed intense, especially Auburn week. Said they came back in 2000 for fall camp and he was the nice, non demanding, non accountable DuBose again.
@@garycobiak5926 he took over the play calling from Charlie Stubb's, which was a joke. I remember, the offensive line, giving themselves the nickname, "The pancake club", and having t shirts made. The coaches and players, drank massive amounts of rat poison
I thought they did Andrew Zow wrong that year. He was a heck of a QB. Watts fit more with Fran's scheme, but Zow was the better passer. After his injury later that year, they forced a rotation with Watts. And then they benched him in 2000 until Watts got hurt. Just thought this staff mishandled quite a bit.
@@blakemccormick9612 If I remember right, Zow got benched vs Auburn and Watts finished the game. Interestingly enough, Alexander got the bulk of his 182 yards rushing after Watts came in. I don't remember Watts being asked to do much. Then, they rotated vs Florida and Michigan. However, I never liked that strategy...
Mike DuBose beat Steve Spurrier twice in one season - once in OT at Florida, and then in a blowout in the SEC Championship. Yeah, DuBose had his problems, but that's one hell of an accomplishment.
I understand. But Spurrier’s were prophetic. He spoke about cheating after the SECCG. Everyone knew Bama bought this team. Now it’s legal. But wasn’t back then.
@zippyzipster46 Typical southern bible belt thinking...Acting as if knowing everybody cheats including yourself is divine knowledge, when its just common sense. They make money off that too tho... 😉 😉
I remember watching this game on tv. 8th grade. My dad bought me a sega dreamcast afterwards as sort of a celebration. I’m pretty sure the week before bama had just lost to La Tech.. so this was a great win.
The game style, the size of the players and the impact of the defensive hits look much different than today's game. It's fun to look back at this game.
I was there. Bama had lost to La Tech 2 weeks prior. So, needless to say Gator fans were sitting on their hands in the first quarter . They were awake by the second quarter. One of my all-time favorite Bama wins.
I really hate that Shaun Alexander got hurt this year. He was never really the same after the injury in the Tennessee game, but still found a way to get tough yards vs Auburn, Florida and Michigan at the end of the season. However, had he stayed healthy, there's no doubt he would win the Heisman over Ron Dayne. He had 1000 yards after the Tennessee game, missed a game vs. Southern Miss and may have had a combined 70 yards vs LSU and Miss. State in limited action. Should have been Alabama's first Heisman winner.
First loss at home as a student. 22-2 during my time there, 96-99. Ben Hill Griffin was magical. 30 game home win streak... Bama played a great game. So did FSU later in the year. Hard to beat Spurrier during those years, 94-99. Go Gators!
Thank you so much for uploading this. I was piss drunk during this game. This was also the day I tried ecstasy for the 1st and last time. I remember Shaun Alexander smiling at midfield before the start of overtime and knowing we were winning that one. I then remember going to some music festival in Mobile rolling on E. I then proceeded to piss by a sound stage while being yelled at by the crew and some chick. I then had to pee again and was directed to a bar. While waiting in line at the bar, I watched people playing pool. I was amazed by the colors of the ball and just had to touch them. Obviously, the pool players were more than annoyed. I was so blitzed I could not find my way back to the festival. So what do I do? Call my ex from a payphone while unable to tell her where I am downtown. 3 hours later she found me slumped over on a side street. Wake up the next afternoon at my Ex's thinking how TF did I get here. Needless to say that was the last time I ever messed with that shit!
There’s no doubt Alabama was the better team in 1999, y’all proved it in the rematch in Atlanta, but oh my lord was this some stupefying incompetence on Florida’s part in crunch time. Muffing a punt, missing that tackle on Alexander’s TD run, missing a PAT and then lining up offsides in Alabama’s missed PAT. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a talented Florida team try so hard to lose a game, especially at home.
Damn what a shitty end of the game for Darryl Jackson dude caught 3 touchdowns but in the end that muffed punt cost UF the game. Also LOL at the bama kicker barely making that extra point almost had back to back missed XPs
Daryl Jackson and Alex Willis dogged Alabama db's i always imagined if Travis Taylor wasn't hurt for Florida if this game would have went a little different
It's October 21st 2022 and I'm still cheering like it's live! I remember this game so clearly!
People forget how difficult it was to defeat Spurrier back in the day, especially in the Swamp
RedSkaal Spurrier lost 5 home games in 12 seasons as Florida head coach. And never lost at home to an unranked team. 69-5 home record.

Steve Spurrier a offensive wizard throwing the football all over the field.
It really was back then. 22-2 when I was a student. 96-99.
Our 90s teams should won 4 national titles..Steves Ego lost alot of games for US..smh
UF RB Robert Gillespie is now Bama's RB coach.

One of my favorite Bama games ever! We beat em twice that year too, and that was damn near impossible vs UF back then! Nostalgia

This game made me an Alabama fan
Not sure he made that second PAT attempt either lol.

Jeff fukin Chandler. The biggest gator choker of all time. How the hell do you miss an extra point for the love of God
Mike Dubose would never have a winning season if it wasn’t for Shaun Alexander

Shaun Alexander was amazing
Wow what a game, Don't remember it, but I know I watched it! Roll Tide!!!
Florida had a decent team in 99 but man they fell apart big time late in the year
Bo Carrol : Underrated
Those PATs in OT were some of the ugliest I’ve ever seen
Kirby smart 2 int vs uf in 1997.
ROLL TIDE!
Zow was taylor made for the modern game that is played today.
In 98, Alabama played well enough to beat them. In hindsight this game makes perfect sense.
Alabama lost to Michigan by missing an XP in the Orange that season.
The Gators haven't been Defeated in the Swamp since (36-33 Auburn and Terry Bowden) in 1994
Amazing. Go Gators!
How exactly was the play at 16:17 Intentional Grounding?
It wasn't. Horrible call
He clearly threw the ball away and only the QB can do that. After the ball is lateralled those protections are removed.
