Florida was very angry about how FSU hit Danny Wuerful in the first matchup. They were also obviously pissed about losing the first game, too. Add those to the Sugar Bowl being played in a dome and on a fast track, which was perfect for the speed of Florida, and FSU was walking into a buzz saw. From 1990-2000 this was without question the best rivalry in college football and possibly the best decade for ANY rivalry in the history of the sport. Both teams were ranked in the top 10 in ALL 13 games. Both teams were in the top 5 for 6 of them and at least 1 of them was in the top 5 for the last 12. VeryHairy Krishna why even play the first time then? Arizona State was #2, but because the stupid ass bowl coalition, PAC10 teams couldn’t play ACC teams. Numerous times in history, teams got to play the #5 or 6 or 7 ranked teams for the title, and all they could muster up was a rematch from 3 weeks earlier. The game got played on astroturf, FSU had 11 starters out with a stomach bug, too. Gator fans conveniently forget that part. At the 6:05 mark Ike Hilliard makes one of the best plays I've ever seen. Both teams loaded with athletes. Wuerffel took quite a beating and delivered under pressure. Not many teams ever hung 52 on Bobby Bowden.
This is why I say Wuerffel is the best QB the Gators ever had, as opposed to Tim Tebow. Tebow DID beat FSU 4 straight times, but he beat them when they were at the worst they have been in 30 years. Wuerffel only won twice against them (almost three), but he beat FSU when they were undefeated, number one ranked, and put up 52 points against the number one ranked defense in the nation. Truly, he was the best QB the Gators ever had.
I remember this one well, G ville blew up on university ave after the game, everyone came out the house to celebrate. When the team traveled back the town was jumping
This team was def the last team in college football that you wanted to play indoors. Nothing better for the fun-n-gun offense than no wind on artificial turf. Almost an unfair advantage lol It certainly looked like it in this game. Speaking of the fun-n-gun, it amazes a lot of people dont realize we ran the ball a LOT with Spurrier and that we normally did not use the shotgun. Most casual fans think they just lined up the shotgun and did nothing but throw.
I'll never forget when the Florida player guaranteed a win over Florida State and they asked him why are you so confident? His response: They ain't Nebraska!
This game put the passion for college football o to my blood and it has been there ever since!!! Go Gators! I do miss the days of Steve Spurrier and Bobby Bowden wondering the sidelines.
This was such fun to reminisce about, especially after the noles got their last points, knowing the final score😊 of the game. I'm an Alabama fan. One of the things I distinctly remember from this game was right before the start of the game, the scoreboard said "quarter 5" because the last game between the two was their annual rivalry.
You can make an argument that Florida shouldn’t have even been in this game but they were and proved to be the best. Florida was always better than FSU this year; the first matchup was kind of an anomaly, the best doesn’t always win.
Yep you are right. Thanks. I looked it up after reading your post and you are right. Lost by 3 to Auburn. What is it with Auburn? They always seem to beat us every time we play.
